While most rock bands cite blues music as an influence, Cinderella was one of the few bands from the eighties where you could actually hear it, feel it, taste it.
The band was formed with members Tom Keifer (singer, keyboards, guitar), Eric Brittingham (bass), Michael Smerick (guitar) and Tony Destra (drums). Within two years Destra and Smerick left to form Britny Fox. Using eighties 20-20 hindsight: MISTAKE? I’m sure hanging with the girls while making the video for “Girlschool” had to be a great day it still can’t compare to being in what would become Cinderella.
In 1985 Cinderella recorded their first album, “Night Songs,” with guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec. After recording the album, Fred Coury replaced Drnec and joined the band for the supporting tour. The first single, “Shake Me,” from the album featured a girl sitting on her bed with a Cinderella poster behind her. Her wicked (READ: slutty) sisters appear and are off to rock and roll (READ: shoot heroin and sleep with rock guys) while she is left all alone. Then the poster comes alive and she is now at a live Cinderella concert. It should be mentioned that Tom Keifer is wearing the Paul Stanley 1984 permanent hair style throughout the song. When I’m running VH1 someday I will definitely do a WHERE ARE THEY NOW documentary on the Cinderella wicked sisters. More...
25 years ago hard rock and glam albums found regular rotation on the radio and pop culture thanks to MTV, Circus Magazine, and eighties culture. 1986 was riding the fringe of hair band saturation, but also the year Metallica and Megadeth put out timeless efforts. Since 1986 we have seen the grunge era, the boy band era, and the release of St. Anger. We’ve seen it all in the last 25 years.
Here’s a look back at ten of these classic albums in no particular order. There is a twist as Marry/Fuck/Kill rules apply. It’s as simple as it sounds. M (Marry) is a song you want to “save” and listen to forever, F (Fuck) is the song you get one more listen to and that is it, and K (Kill) is the song you want to go away and never be heard from again.
Master of Puppets (Metallica)
M: Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
F: Damage, Inc.
K: The Thing That Should Not Be
(NOTE: It really is the perfect “F” song) More...

During a lazy Sunday I found myself catching up on previously recorded episodes of Bored to Death when much to my delight I discovered a couple Metal Mania episodes on queue. Here’s what I found:
In Kiss’s video for “Rock and Roll all Nite,” I wonder what was so bad that the girl coming down the stairs needed her eyes blacked out like they do on the show Cops. Also, is there someplace we can put all of the eighties brick-sized cell phones for display? I would definitely go to the Pre-2K Cell Phone Hall of Fame (maybe located in Indiana?) to see the phone Gene Simmons has while sitting on his throne in this video as well as the one used by Zack Morris on Saved by the Bell. While Vince Neil’s (Motley Crue) accuser teams with her lawyer (Neil was accused of attacking a woman in an elevator), Vince is spending time at the grand opening of Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club, posing for pictures with porn legend Ron Jeremy and Bunny Ranch head Dennis Hoff. This answers the age old question: Can enough Tequila make you forget all of your problems and make you feel invincible?... More...
This week I give you my top albums from the eighties hair bands. Essentially a top twenty-five list, with a twist; imagine all of the albums from the eighties disappeared and you could no longer listen to this genre ever again, similar to 1992, but permanent. Unable to own the music, hear the music on the radio, or even listen to a song at a bar…what would you do to change this? Allow me to present the razor blade test. How many times will you cut yourself to bring a particular album back to your life? More...

Jon Bon Jovi alone increased acid washed denim sales by 40 percent. In the videos “Living on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name” there are more ass shots of Jon than two years of Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez on TMZ…There is no way the Latin kid playing the drug lord in Motley Crue’s “Dr. Feelgood” rises to the top of the underworld…I always thought it was assumed Poison wore the most spandex until I saw the number of tight changes in David Lee Roth’s “Goin Crazy”…KISS easily has the most body hair of any rock band…The song “You’ve got Another Thing Coming” by Judas Priest takes on different meaning from when I first saw it years ago… More...

Tim Heyne, who works at Union Entertainment Group, which manages rock bands such as NICKELBACK, CINDERELLA, OLEANDER and DEFAULT, was shot in the chest by a 38-year-old man with a violent past, who went on a 16-hour rampage in Ventura County (California), killing three people — including a mother who was pistol-whipped in front of her children — and injuring five others before taking his own life Tuesday morning (May 31) inside a Wal-Mart store, according to the Los Angeles Times.
