The Rockstar Ramblings: 1986 M/F/K

Band Photo: Metallica (?)

25 years ago hard rock and glam albums found regular rotation on the radio and pop culture thanks to MTV, Circus Magazine, and eighties culture. 1986 was riding the fringe of hair band saturation, but also the year Metallica and Megadeth put out timeless efforts. Since 1986 we have seen the grunge era, the boy band era, and the release of St. Anger. We’ve seen it all in the last 25 years.

Here’s a look back at ten of these classic albums in no particular order. There is a twist as Marry/Fuck/Kill rules apply. It’s as simple as it sounds. M (Marry) is a song you want to “save” and listen to forever, F (Fuck) is the song you get one more listen to and that is it, and K (Kill) is the song you want to go away and never be heard from again.

Master of Puppets (Metallica)
M: Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
F: Damage, Inc.
K: The Thing That Should Not Be
(NOTE: It really is the perfect “F” song)

Eat’em And Smile (David Lee Roth)
M: Yankee Rose
F: Tobacco Road
K: I’m Easy

Slippery When Wet (Bon Jovi)
M: Wanted Man
F: Livin’ On A Prayer / You Give Love (a Bad Name)
K: Side B
(NOTE: given Livin’ On A Prayer and You Give Love basically sound the same it really doesn’t matter to me)

Night Songs (Cinderella)
M: Nobody’s Fool
F: Shake Me
K: Nothin’ for Nothin’

5150 (Van Halen)
M: Best of Both Worlds
F: Summer Nights
K: Why Can’t This Be Love

Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? (Megadeth)
M: Peace Sells
F: The Conjuring
K: I Ain’t Superstitious

Inside The Electric Circus (W.A.S.P.)
M: 9.5. – N.A.S.T.Y.
F: Inside The Electric Circus
K: King of Sodom and Gomorrah

Look What The Cat Dragged In (Poison)
M: Look What The Cat Dragged In
F: Talk Dirty To Me
K: Play Dirty

Dancing Undercover (Ratt)
M: Body Talk
F: Slip of The Lip
K: It Doesn’t Matter
(NOTE: very difficult to Kill anything on this album as over time I have come to appreciate this as the most “complete” Ratt album from start to finish)

The Ultimate Sin (Ozzy Osbourne)
M: The Ultimate Sin
F: Fool Like You
K: Shot In The Dark
(NOTE: sometimes you’ve just had enough of a hit single)

Don't forget "Reign in Blood." That wasn't a radio hit, but many consider that the great thrash album of all time. Candlemass coined the term "doom metal" with "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus." '86 was definitely a good year. It's too bad I was too young and ignorant to know it at the time! I did listen to Ozzy's "Shot in the Dark" and Cinderella "Nobody's Fool," both rad tunes, because that stuff was on the radio.

Good one Scribbler. I graduated from HS in 86. Such a great year for metal/hardcore. Within 3 or 4 months of graduating,i saw Metallica/Ozzy tour; Priest Turbo tour; Black Flags last tour; Dead Kennedys last tour with Jello; Flotsam@Jetsum open for Megadeth. Yup,86 was such a great year!

I was only 10 in '86 and wasn't even introduced to metal yet.

Definitely wish I could have seen all of those shows you went to - especially the Metallica/Ozzy and the Black Flag shows. Do you remember anything from the BF show? (I know its been 25 years and many many beers ago.)

Nice to see the age ranges here. I was entering high school in 86 and only starting to listen to hair metal (no "real" metal yet). I picked up "Look What The Cat Dragged In" when it was new too :-)

Yea,Drum Junkie,i remember those shows like they happened yesterday. I was driving into Boston in a 69 SS Camaro starting in 84. Went to tons of punk/hardcore/metal shows. I couldnt drink then,so i got the big back majic markered x on my hand at most of those all ages matinee shows. What i remember about the Black Flag show was 7 or 8 minute jams. Wished i could have seen em when Dez was singing. Metallica? They blew poor ol Oz off the stage so bad,i felt bad for him. Ozzy was at his bloated drug addled worse then, but still a legend! Metallica was a ass-whooping machine then;probably why i still take up for em nowadays.
