Paul Di'Anno Compares His Band With Iron Maiden

In a recent interview with Rockinnet.com, singer Paul Di'anno was asked what he thought of Iron Maiden in todays world and what performing means to him. An excerpt from the chat is as follows:

Rockonnet.com: What do you think about Iron Maiden (these days)?
Di'Anno: "Who cares!!"

Rockonnet.com: You rock more?
Di'Anno: "I think we do, yeah. We’re not here for money making. We play for very little money nowadays. I mean, we don’t need the money. I mean we sold; well I sold about 30 million records. So I don’t really care – It’s not about the money. We just love to play."

Rockonnet.com: Where do you have the biggest fan base in the world?
Di'Anno: "Well, we have been concerting Europe at the moment, but I would obviously say Brazil and United States. But Europe is fantastic because we did the Wacken festival three years ago - 45,000 people going absolutely nuts. We did Sweden Rock (recently). Fucking 100,000 people going absolutely crazy. It’s great. We win them over (the fans) where ever we go. I think what it is…not because we are great musicians and stuff like that. I think it’s because we are just normal people. You know. I think the audience, the fans and kids that come to see us understand that we are just a bunch of idiots that go out there and have fun. That’s what it’s about, really. It doesn’t really matter I mean. I’ve sold (lots of) records. It ain’t the money. It never has been and never will be. I’d play for hamburger and beer at the end of the day because I love to play. So that’s what it’s all about for me."

Iron Maiden Movie Underway

Famed producer Kevin Shirley, notable for his work with Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, has posted the following message:

"Here I am, in a downtown Toronto hotel, suffering the ill effects of an hermetically sealed hotel room when both the air and the temperature outside are perfect for camping under the stars! Not that you're likely to find me camping anywhere when there's a hotel within fifty miles - we don't camp! I'm here to check out the line edits of the Iron Maiden movie (specifically the perfomance aspects) which is being edited and assembled here, so last night we got together to listen to the audio and see the edit thus far. They're a good bunch of lads and lasses, but I must confess to it being a little early in the process for me to be here, or they're running a bit behind, as it's not quite where it should be but I'll certainly help out where I can, and so it's off to the studio soon, to fix up sync and shot issues before anyone gets to see the rough cut."

The Bitches are Back

Known for her arsenal of BC Rich guitars - affectionately called "bitches" by those who play them - and her talent for ripping things up as good as the next guy, Lita Ford shredded things up last night at Rocklahoma in Pryor, OK, a four day rock and metal fest featuring bands from the '80s like Queensrÿche, Warrant and Tesla.

Joining her on stage were Stet Howland (W.A.S.P.) on drums, Teddy Cook (Dio) on Bass, Michael T. Ross (Bent Pussycat) on keyboards, and Tom Cavanagh (Angel) on guitar.

According to Rocklahoma's official website this is Lita's first show in 15 years, not counting the warm-up gigs she did around New York earlier this month under the guise of a Lita Ford tribute act called Kiss Me Deadly.

After gaining notoriety for her guitar skills with The Runaways, Lita left the all-female rock group to forge a solo career in 1979, scoring huge hits with tunes like "Gotta Let It Go," "Kiss Me Deadly," and "Close My Eyes Forever," a duet with Ozzy Osbourne.

At the height of her career, Lita toured with some of the biggest acts in rock and metal, heavy hitters like Black Sabbath, Anthrax, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, proving that girls could play guitar and helping introduce a once male-dominated genre to legions of head-banging chicks across the globe.

The Queen of Metal recently signed on with Coallier Entertainment , a New York-based label that also houses Foreigner and Twisted Sister on their roster. Does this mean we can expect a new album from the metal glamazon? This mother of two is keeping mum, but rumours of a press conference on Monday should reveal if her hiatus is finally over.

Avenged Sevenfold Posts Update From Maiden Tour

Avenged Sevenfold frontman M. Shadows has posted an upbeat update from the Iron Maiden tour:

"We just started the tour with Maiden and I hear a lot of you guys are getting really worked up about the shows. Lets start with Norway, it was our first time there and we were blown away by the support we received. We can't wait to come back on this tour with Maiden in a few weeks and see you all again.

"As for Italy, it was our first time opening up directly for Maiden. Now just so you're clear, when we took this tour we knew it was going to be hard and we knew that Iron Maiden fans were very dedicated people. So when we heard a "Sevenfold" chant before we hit the stage we knew it would cause a stir with the crowd, but it made us proud and really got us excited about our fans over in Italy. We heard horror stories about opening for "Maiden." Everything from standing backwards on stage so that the trash coming
from the audience didn't hit you in the face to having bottles filled with piss thrown at your head. So after the show we felt pretty good about everything since we got to play for a lot of people and we got to see how many great fans we had there representing. So when you go to these shows don't get upset if people don't understand just yet what Avenged Sevenfold is all about. We are not a straight up metal band that is catering to their audience, we do our own thing and thats why we have so many dedicated fans.

"We did this same thing 2 years ago with Metallica, the difference then was that we had 40k kids a night with their arms crossed and not many fans. Now we are feeling the love from you guys and the one thing this tour is proving to us is that we need to come back and headline for you all after this is over.

"So the point is we are having a great time at the shows, and you should too. Don't get all upset about a couple bottles being thrown, next year half those kids may have A7X on their IPOD and we could be their new favorite band. Like I said, we knew what we were signing up for and we are glad so many of you are supporting us through this tour. You are some passionate motherfuckers! See ya'll soon!"

Metallica Covers Iron Maiden For Kerrang Tribute

Metallica has revealed that they recorded a cover of Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow," off the band's self-titled debut album. Here's the update from Metallica'a MySpace blog:

"We were honored to be asked to participate in Kerrang's exclusive 'Maiden Heaven' tribute album... one of those super cool Kerrang! CD's that you can only get when you buy the mag. In this case, the issue (1219) goes on sale in the UK on July 16 and for those of you somewhere else, you can pick it up online at http://www.kerrang.com.

"We picked 'Remember Tomorrow' from Iron Maiden's self titled first album... it was basically the blueprint for songs like 'Fade to Black' and 'Sanitarium' and when we were jamming our way thru most of our favorite early Maiden songs, this one stood out and also came together somewhat effortlessly... we had a blast recording it at HQ in the middle of all the insanity of the last two weeks of finishing the new album back in May. Some of our other favorite bands recorded their own versions of Maiden songs too... Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Dream Theater to name a few. There are more details in the current issue of Kerrang! or on their site... or check out the "official" press release here.

Dream Theater Cover Iron Maiden's "To Tame A Land"

Legendary progressive metallers Dream Theater have recorded a cover of Iron Maiden's "To Tame A Land" from 1983's classic album "Piece Of Mind." The song will be on a special CD issued with a forthcoming issue of Kerrang! magazine. More details as they surface.

An interesting fact about the song is that Iron Maiden originally wanted to call the song "Dune" as it was inspired by the science fiction novel (and later film) of the same name. When the band originally sent a letter to Frank Herbert's (author) agent for permission. The response read as follows: "No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden." Songwriter Steve Harris tried to convince Herbert that the song would be a good promo for the book, but he still refused. Harris once reffered to the song as the best he'd ever written and wanted the song to start with a spoken word quote from "Dune."
