Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica To Release Next Album Online?
According to NME.com, METALLICA are considering releasing their new album online, but drummer Lars Ulrich says that their next record might be a while coming.
The band recently came to the end of their record deal, and are weighing up all the options, which could include a regular label release.
“We’re free of our record contract,” Ulrich told Rolling Stone. “We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an internet thing or even put it on Andy Greene’s record label.” More...
KISS Unhappy With Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
Gene Simmons, the iconic bassist for rock legends KISS recently spoke about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his unhappiness that KISS has, to date, not been included.
"There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, but not KISS," the band's outspoken frontman said during a speech at the Billboard Touring Conference on Thursday. "I believe we have more gold records in America than any other group, but it's OK."
The band is not among the nine acts on this year's shortlist, which includes metal icons Metallica, rock guitarist Jeff Beck, and soul singer Bobby Womack. The final five, determined by a ballot of more than 500 industry voters, will be announced in January, ahead of the 24th annual induction ceremony in Cleveland on April 4.
Regarding the top officials of the Hall of Fame's foundation, Simmons said: "A lot of those guys on the board can go and get my sandwich when I want, and I mean that in the nicest way," he said.
The speech was filmed for an episode of his reality show Gene Simmons Family Jewels, currently in its third season on the A&E cable channel.

Metallica Reveals More About Next Single
Metallica has posted the following update online:
"The next track from Death Magnetic, 'All Nightmare Long' will get the full on treatment with a CD single collection available throughout Europe and other parts of the world (sorry, not in North America). Here's how it works ... starting December 15 you can pick up the collector's digi pack with the album version of 'All Nightmare Long" along with 'Wherever I May Roam' and 'Master Of Puppets' recorded live in Berlin at the DM release bash at the 02 World back in September.
"If you would like to complete your single collection, there are two more components available in what our record company calls a 'J card' (??) . . . CD 2 has the track again, 'Blackened' and 'Seek And Destroy', also recorded at the Berlin 02. Finally, if you just have to own the entire set, there is a third release, a DVD including a 10 minute mini-documentary about our day in Berlin along with 20 minutes worth of live tracks from that night's album release party, as well another 15 minute movie of yours truly in the tuning room at the Rock Im Park show earlier that summer.
"For those of you who prefer the digital version, check your friendly online providers and you will be able to download all the tracks, including the videos.
"Happy Days!"
Exodus Guitarist Gary Holt Slams Rick Rubin
Exodus guitarist Gary Holt recently took part in the "Call & Response" section of Decibel magazine where artists give their opinions on songs from heavy metal artists and beyond. When faced with "My Apocalypse" by Metallica, here's what he had to say:
"There are some killer riffs on this one; nice to hear them rediscover that tempos can be fast sometimes. Much better than any of the last three (albums) for sure. But Rick Rubin is a monumental hack. He has killed the production of the record for me. I was really expecting James to throw down the "...And Justice For All" crunch, totally crushing guitars, but these are not heavy at all. If all they were looking for in a producer was 'guidance,' I would have told them all they need to know for dinner and a beer: 'Go back, listen to your legendary records, listen to your Diamond Head records and then gather in a room together and make a metal record.' I would have given them this advice for free- much cheaper than Rubin! But it's growing on me. I still dig it, just not the sound of it. Andy Sneap would have made this a monster. And thank Satan Kirk is soloing again! The world needs him to shred!"
Metallica Reveals New Single Details
Metallica has selected "All Nightmare Long" to be the new single from their latest album, "Death Magnetic." The single will be released in Europe via Vertigo Records and will also be available as a special collectors package which includes three CDs which features new live recordings and the accompanying video amongst other bonuses.

Lamb Of God Banned In L.A. Forum Once Again
Lamb Of God has been replaced my Machine Head on the Los Angeles dates of the Metallica tour. Here's the announcement from Metallica:
"As you may have heard, the owners of the Los Angeles Forum have a little issue with our friends from Lamb of God, so unfortunately they will not be joining us for the two shows at the Forum on December 17 and 18. That's the bad news... the good news is that our bros in Machine Head are rushing back to the States from Europe to step in on those two nights. And of course no show would be complete without The Sword kicking things off, so they'll be there too."
Lamb of God was previously banned from performing at the church-owned (then-named) Great Western Forum in April of 2005 on the Subliminal Verses tour with Slipknot because church leaders were offended by the group's previous name, Burn the Priest.
In a statement on the band's Web site, drummer Chris Adler called the church's decision back in 2005 "a bit ridiculous."
"If they had taken the time to look into what we do and who we are as a band, I don't think they would have made the same decision," he told The Associated Press in 2005.
"They have made it clear that they do not want us because of our name, our show and our crowd," Adler said. "The word from the powers that be is that Lamb of God is not the wholesome family fun that the good people of Los Angeles deserve."

The petition states: "Death Magnetic is a fantastic effort from Metallica, however many of us are disappointed by the poor audio quality present on the album. Please sign this petition so that we can hopefully either get it remastered, or re-mixed, depending on where the problems occurred at some point, or to ensure that the next Metallica album does not suffer from the same issues, or get caught up in the loudness war that is ruining modern music."

Metallica Discusses Leaving Staley Song Off Album
Metallica frontman James Hetfield penned a touching musical tribute to tragic Alice in Chains star Layne Staley - but decided it wasn't good enough for the band's new album Death Magnetic.
The frontman admits he didn't really know the late star, who died from a drug overdose in 2002, but his tragic demise inspired him to write many of the dark tracks on Metallica's new album.
And one track, "Shine," was written all about Staley.
Hetfield tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I know (Alice In Chains star) Jerry Cantrell quite well and learned about Layne through him... I could see some of the things Jerry went through to keep that band together.
"I started writing a song around a Layne Staley type - a rock 'n' roll martyr magnetised by death. Why did he choose that path, someone with such talent?"
Metallica recorded Death Magnetic with a photograph of Staley taped to the wall of their studio control room. More...
