Metallica To Release Next Album Online?

According to NME.com, METALLICA are considering releasing their new album online, but drummer Lars Ulrich says that their next record might be a while coming.
The band recently came to the end of their record deal, and are weighing up all the options, which could include a regular label release.
“We’re free of our record contract,” Ulrich told Rolling Stone. “We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an internet thing or even put it on Andy Greene’s record label.”
Despite the fact that the band’s most recent album Death Magnetic was well-received, the band are in no rush to churn out another album anytime soon.
“I wouldn’t hold my breath for another Metallica record,” Ulrich said. “I’m still decompressing and coming down from the whole experience of the last one, but if we spit one out every four or five years that’s not so bad.”

I think Metallica is the only band in the world who would be PRAISED for basically taking albums they've previously done and slapping a new name/lyrics on it.

BretttheJett- I agree. 90% of the people that would go to a Metallica show these days are delirious with fanboy-ism. They are the kind of people that would faint it Lars walked by. If this Death Magnetic came out in 1995, I woild probably still be a fan. I gave up on them at about that time-Load, saying "Metal is dead" in every interview, the Until it Sleeps video *shudder*, need I go on? PS Trejillo is a piece of sh** for re-recording Daisley's basslines!

Too many bands are involved in the whole "online-only" releasing of music. Music used to be about the image too, and the packaging. It's like Brian Johnson said about iTunes not being a good thing.. a poster on this site (I can't remember who) said that it's a shame that you can scroll through pages and pages of a band's music on iTunes and not even see their logo..

Perhaps my point would be better served through a pretentious culinary metaphor. To wit:
The Chocolate Metallishake
Notes on preparation: Allow for 26 years of prep time. Use a machine that blurs and chops ingredients into an indistinguishable puree for easy consumption (see www.riaa.com, a great source of info on this antiquated and inefficient yet nostalgic machine).
1) Add five scoops of delicious, high quality chocolate ice cream to the blender. Don't skimp - use the good stuff. Also, be sure to mix in a generous helping of Cliff Bars with the first four scoops. These add the essential flavor and texture that make this dessert a classic. If you starting to run low on good ice cream but still wan to keep churning out shakes, you can always add ice cubes (I prefer Garage Inc. brand) to create the illusion of substance. Add cheap, store-bought chocolate sauce to make it more palatable to the average diner. Too much filler may turn a small, delicious batch into an icy, sugary mess, but who cares? Quantity and ease of consumption are the keys here. Sad but true…
2) Now, ideally this dessert is prepared in private, but after seeing that ice cream plop into the blender, the kids will undoubtedly be chomping at the bit. With no regard for whether they are watching or not, overcome your five-year constipation and take an enormous dump into the blender. If you can’t get it all out in the first Load, take a minute to catch your breath (after all, you are getting pretty old), Reload, and try again. To the untrained eye, chocolate ice cream and sh** look the same, so the less sophisticated diners probably even know the difference, and would probably prefer Buck Cherry flavor anyhow, or Cherry Garcia if we’re lucky.
3) By this time there will be quite a stink in the house (especially if you live in an impermeable metal house), but with alternatives like Limp Biscuits and stale Korn, the kids who did notice you taking a dump in the blender will do their best to ignore the crap in the hopes of getting some of that good old ice cream. Still, you will probably free up tons of room in the kitchen, as the die-hard chocolate fans and the bassist will leave. This is your time to experiment a bit – try hollow snares, remove any complex, guitar-solo-like ingredients – and come to terms with yourself as a cook. The estranged and ravenous consumers will probably still be hungry, so you can video-tape this embarrassing process in the kitchen and sell it for a killing.
4) Now taste it. How does it taste? If it’s a little bitter, that’s probably the huge Loads of feces that you added before. At this point your only option is to pull the ice cream container out of the trash, scrape out the little bits of ice cream, and hope that the leftovers will be enough to balance out the taste. The Metallishake is now as ready as it’s ever going to be. Be sure to package and label the dish so it can be distinguished from other amorphous piles of brown material, and compress the sh** out of it until it has no flavor left at all.
Serve cold. If need be, use the long arm of the mass media to ram it down America’s throat. Feces or no, the fat cats know it’s going to be a hit for the holiday season.

ZT- Apologizes, ZT. Sorry if I offended you. But to say there is no validity in that statment would be ignoring reality. Here in the states Metallica's fanbase is mostly fan boys and soccer moms. It is probably different where you are at across the pond, but here that is the sad state of affairs. I mean, anyone still interested after the Black album, Load, Re-Load, Napstar, the Mission Impossible soundtrack, touring with Limp Bizkit/Kid Rock, Newsted replaced by douche bag Trejillo, and the foot long bowel moment that was St Anger are...I guess you would call them "Die Hards."
So to rephrase, 90% of Metallica's fans these days are die hards.
Again apologizes, this is just my opinion and unfortunately it is rather negative.
If you wanna talk the first four albums, I am there with ya! Timeless classics.
For what it is worth, they owned the eighties!

As I think most of the people who post on this site are. My take on the whole thing is, we all come to this site to talk with others about metal music. We all have differing viewpoints on bands. But good or bad, we all have the right to post. So if you dont like an opinion on these forums, grow the hell up and realize we dont all think alike. Acknowledge and move on. Cheers.

I think I get along pretty well with everybody on this site (as do most people), with the exception of KORNDOGG, because he just likes to talk trash about anyone who doesn't like Korn. But yeah, most people argue a bit over something and usually end up being cool with each other..

This reminds me of an interview on Global Metal, where Lars was aked what he thought of all these metallica fans in other countries where metal cd's were illegal, so all their fans over there were just downloading their music illegally, since metallica had been so against Napster and everything. He paused. Then he was like, "ya, I think it's cool" So either he's a hypocrite, or he's finally seeing the folly of his ways. I hope it's the second one, but... :p

Oh, and I have to say that so far, since yo asked me in another thread, Fear and The Evil Has landed off Testaments new cd have been getting constant replays for me(catchy music, but still as thrash as ever, awesome!), but i still have yet to find the time to listen to the whole thing beginning to end. I'll just have to burn a cd and play it while i do housework or something lol
