Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

120 People Arrested At Metallica Concert
At a recent Metallica concert in Chile, around 120 people were arrested and a policeman was injured when a large number of fans who did not have tickets attempted to force their way into the show. There have been a number of charges pressed including drug possession, disorderly conduct and drinking in public.
“A group of people tried to enter without tickets and Carabineros (militarized police) had to act, launching water,” Col. Miguel Angel Castro said.
The Metallica fans will meet their fate on Wednesday when prosecutors decide what should be done about the incident and those involved.
Remains of Missing Virginia Tech Student Found
Skeletal remains of what is believed to be Morgan Dana Harrington, the 20-year-old Virgina Tech student who went missing following a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, Virginia on October 17, 2009, have been found on a Virginia farm 10 miles from the concert venue.
The remains reportedly have blond hair and were clad in black clothing. Missing-person fliers for Harrington described her as blond and said she was wearing a black T-shirt with the word "Pantera" on it, a black miniskirt, black tights and black boots when she disappeared.
At a news conference, authorities said they were confident the remains are those of Harrington. "There were significant items and evidence" found to support the identification, Virginia State Police Superintendent Steve Flaherty said, although he would not elaborate. Police did not give any information about how she died. The body was being taken to Richmond for an autopsy.
The Harrington family offered a $100,000 reward for her return or information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in her disappearance, to which Metallica added another $50,000.
Metallica commented on the latest turn of events:
"Our most sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of Morgan Dana Harrington, the 20 year old Virginia Tech student who was last seen while attending our concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA. Sadly, Morgan's body was found yesterday ending her family's three month vigil hoping and praying for her safe return. Mere words cannot express the anguish and grief that we know her parents Dan and Gil are feeling, and our thoughts are with them.
"If you have any information at all about Morgan's death, please contact the Virginia State Police at (434) 352-3425 or the UVA Police at (434) 352-3467 or police@virginia.edu."
Six Feet Under Posts Metallica Cover Online
Tampa, Florida death metal band Six Feet Under has posted their cover of Metallica's "The Frayed Ends Of Sanity" on their MySpace page. The cover comes off of their latest album, "Graveyard Classics 3," which was recorded at D.O.I. Digital Audio in Tampa, FL, was mixed at Audiohammer Studios by Mark Lewis, and was produced by Chris Barnes.
Chris Barnes comments about the band's latest chapter in the Graveyard Classics chain, "We went about picking the tracks for this installment of Graveyard Classics by really just trying to search out songs from early on in our musical upbringing, as well as tracks from when we were just fans of heavy music, before we started playing in a band. Once again choosing songs that have really stuck with us over the years, also choosing the songs that we felt would sound interesting when played in the SFU ‘death groove' style."
"Through the years of doing covers, many of our fans have inquired about us covering a Slayer or a Metallica song. It was really something we wanted to do for some time, those two bands being our biggest influences, as well as influencing a generation of death metal musicians. To sum it up…this is a tribute to honor the great teachers that have influenced us as well as the world of metal we all belong to. We hope our fans will enjoy." More...

Metallica Changes Latvia Tour Schedule
A message on the official Metallica web site reads:
"We are very sorry to report that there will not be a second show in Riga, Latvia as originally scheduled for April 18, 2010. Due to a recent unprecedented economic downturn in Latvia, there simply was not enough demand for tickets for two shows and we are therefore consolidating them into one. We are looking forward to our night back there after a fantastic vibe in the rain in the summer of 2008 and we sincerely hope this does not inconvenience too many of you.
"The night of April 18 will now see us traveling to Tallinn, Estonia to Saku Suurhall for an indoor show. The last time we were in Tallinn in June of 2006, it was the largest live music event there ever . . . we are very psyched to be heading back. Tickets for this show will go on sale January 15, 2010 at 10:00 AM local time. MetClub members should check www.metclub.com for information about a special pre-sale. More...

Breaking News
The "Big Four" Rumors are True
After much speculation, Sonisphere Festival has confirmed the Big Four (Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth) will finally play live again! The Big Four that popularized the thrash metal movement in the 80's have never been on the same stage at once, but now the bands will have the chance to finally do so in 2010.
Originally, just a huge rumor, it has finally been confirmed. After Dave Mustaine angered Metallica and Anthrax, hopes for a Big Four concert were not looking promising. However, Sonisphere Festival has just announced that on June 16th 2010, these thrash metal giants will be sharing the stage for the first time at the Bemowo Airport in Poland. It has also been updated that the Big Four bands will also make a second appearance in the Czech Republic, with more Sonisphere shows featuring the combo to be announced in the coming days and weeks.
"Who would have thought that more than 25 years after its inception, thrash metal's big 4 would not only still be around and more popular than ever, but will now play together for the first time...what a mindfuck! Bring it on!" says Lars Ulrich, the Drummer of Metallica. "It's about fucking time this happened. And it's about time the fans finally what they want. This is fucking awesome," says Kerry King of Slayer.
ANTHRAX guitarist SCOTT IAN agrees, commenting on the enormity of the announcement:
"People have been talking about these four bands playing together since 1984. That's twenty-six years of expectation!!! And the thing is, I believe not only will we live up to the expectations, we will shatter them!! No other four bands as influential as the four of us have ever done this. Imagine if The Beatles, Stones, The Who and Zeppelin had done shows? Or Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, Motorhead? Well, I may be getting into some rarified air here but as a fan, that's how big I feel this is."
The Big Four's appearance is only exclusive to Europe it seems for now. Stay tune for hopes of an appearance in America.
Metallica Adds Extra Tour Dates

'Tallica, Heaven and Hell, Slayer, Anthrax and Mastodon all on one night! Hope you can join us in Prague, Czech Republic at the Mimon Airport on June 19, 2010 for this one. Tickets go on sale Saturday, December 12 at 9:00 AM."

Pop punk band Sum 41, who has been known to play some Metallica in the past as well as some heavier original material, recently played a number of classic Metallica songs (and cover) live and posted up four new videos of them, including "Master Of Puppets," "For Whom The Bell Tolls," "Stone Cold Crazy," and a medley of other Metallica songs. Unlike some other bands covering metal classics, they've actually done an admirable job. Check out the first video below, with more after the jump.
