The Number Twelve Looks Like You Calls it Quits and Announces NJ Farewell Show in 2010

New Jersey metalcore band The Number Twelve Looks Like You has decided to call it quits. The band will play one last farewell show on Friday, January 29 at School of Rock East in South Hackensack, NJ. The show will feature various special guests to be announced. Guitarist Alexis G. Pareja has issued the following statement regarding the decision to break up:

"When I first started picking up my guitar and playing my favorite songs I always aspired to be able to experience what these talented artists/musicians were feeling. They get up on stage night after night to deliver a show and connect on this level that is metaphysical with their fans. Perhaps fans look up to those artists because they are this kind of gateway to a greater Utopian sense of being that transcends whatever dismal reality we live in. Of course, there are musicians who do this for the wrong reasons and I have had the displeasure of encountering many of these types but they always end up chewed up and spit out by the same people that brought them there. What we forget is that this tightly knit community of genuine original music universally travels and destroys all barriers to bring even the 2 most opposing characters together. It also stands the test of time."

"I'm glad to say I had quite a journey with this band (my first and only band). To write music only for myself and have others enjoy was the greatest thing I could ever happen to me. I saw many faces that genuinely appreciated what we were doing and that was what always kept us going. We may have never reached the pinnacle of what we could have been yet we fought hard and brought challenging ideas to those who chose to listen closely. There comes a moment where one takes a step back and reevaluates what has been built. The Number Twelve Looks Like You brought together a ruthless, diehard, demanding fan base that always made it fun to never know what to expect at every show. I can guarantee that every show we ever played was priceless to us even when there were only 5 kids. Those 5 kids in the middle of shitstown will always remember the bedlam that was our band."

"Due to many ongoing issues and the slow deteriorating of the band throughout the years, #12 has decided to let this little monster go to sleep. It is best to leave this band with high standards it set for itself than to water down anything good that we had. I'm equally sorrowful it had to end in such a manner however this will hopefully give rise to a new chapter of music and creativity from the members. I will continue to pursue my ongoing visions of music, Jon will be drumming till his heart stops the beat, Chris is going to design a computer system that will brew a delicious IPA, and Jase is going to be the head of Warner soon."

"All this is just my meek thoughts and opinions. I want to give thanks to all the fans that gave me the opportunity to take my guitar playing to the next level and to travel the world with such a fine group of gentlemen. It was 9 years of hard work and we saw lots of bands come and go while trudging along with minimal requirements. We shared the stages with many amazing people and I have innumerable memories that have made an impact on me."

"The band was never rich/famous and that was not the goal. We desired to play music we genuinely enjoyed creating while being able to support our own accumulating responsibilities. Unfortunately these personal commitments have overpowered anything we can achieve which is typical of the way this society is structured. It is virtually impossible for the arts and music to thrive in a society that does not support it. You either get duped into playing along or fight the uphill battle to something better."

"Please continue to demand quality from the saturated industry of monkeys that keep on pumping out formulaic rubbish. Hopefully one day it will rid itself of such leeches that feed off your pockets and insult your taste. All this is addressed to those who are continually seeking a culture that is evolved in thought and expressiveness. We may have not spearheaded any movement but we tried all throughout to do something different and personally we feel we achieved that. Farewell to all."

...The comments on this further validate my belief that the internet is where brain cells go to die. The #12 was an amazing band, with amazing music, made up of amazing guys. Just because they weren't conventional, doesn't mean they weren't an extremely talented group of individuals. They were definitely not "formulaic rubbish", as suggested by zMETALlica. Perhaps this website isn't the ideal place for this article, judging by the sample audience I've seen so far. Don't bash them just because you're a "metal-head" and their music isn't in your niche. And the band name has nothing to do with the band's sound, so stop pushing that point. Show some respect for them as musicians that devoted their lives to what they loved, at the very least.

first off. i made my comment cause their later material was very mainstream sounding and generic. the only album i liked was "Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses."

but even so their formula early on was very similar to many other bands of the same genre. i didn't find them crazy innovative either. On the other hand, I found Bodies In The Gears of the Apparatus much more crazy and interesting than #12.

grind/tech death is something that has become rehashed a million times now and the #12 started as something unique, but then just went and followed every other band of the genre. that's my belief at least. moreso they went form a very complex/progressive song structure/riffing to something much more basic. Essentially i think they sold out late career and many many #12 fans i know say the same thing about them. especially the fans i know who have liked them since they were playing local shows here in NJ.

don't tell me i am bashing them cause i don't know the genre or the music. in fact this is exactly why i'm getting on them. also keep in mind i posted the article.

Their band name was taken from a twilight zone episode where everybody became virtually identical. The meaning behind the name is to bring about the awareness of our constant depletion of individuality. Its also a memorable name, I could sh** out 50 names like Mammoth Grinder, Behemoth, Decapitated, and...Death (lol) in less than 5 minutes.

The music itself was anything but mainstream. It was high in dynamics and contrast and the lyrics were well thought out as opposed to just saying the most "brutal" things you can think of. Not to mention the timing signatures were ridiculous on their last two cds.

And anybody that disses someone for calling music "art" is obviously a mindless drone only capable of eating, drinking, and f***ing.

#12 will be missed by the few people that have branched out beyond their 4/4 timing safety box and over compensating G# tuning bullsh**.

"few people that have branched out beyond their [...] safety box"

Maybe in metalcore/hardcore, but not metal.

To Cynic

Most 13 year old emo girls don’t actually like # 12. They tend to be more into Suicide Silence and devil wears prada and stuff. #12 has acquired a fairly small fan base over the past 9 years due to the dissonance of their music and the fact that it takes time and effort to bite into. So if they were trying to impress girls they would have probably named it something like “blood rose pedals” or “my hearts agony.”

And while its possible that Death does have some epicly long story behind it, its unlikely because they’ve never mentioned it.

As for the “falling into the same trap of stereotyping bands as the people you're replying to by picking the lowest” I’ll admit to being guilty of that. I was just p***ed about people ignorance towards the music.

Most Straight up metal does follow the 4/4 timing signature. Granted, some regular death metal bands are really technical, like Death (ironically) but for the most part it tends to be fast and shred, which isn’t bad, they’re accomplishing what they’re trying to do, it just takes more ambition to write music in different timing signatures. If you can name non-metalcore bands that are extremely technical, please do.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for a well thought out response as opposed to the typical angry, half a sentence, ignorant insult I usually get. Thanks, keep it metal

To Nasquatch:

The same 3 arguments are used because they are correct. Just because something is used a lot doesn’t make it incorrect.

That's ok histriumph, thanks for putting up with my aggressive post. I think most metal fans simply dislike a lot of core music because it is encroaching and trying to blend in with the metal scene, hence even just a band name like this is like waving a red flag at a bull (because since there's so many bands named like this "See You Next Tuesday", "Iwrestledabearonce" etc.).

I didn't actually mention girls but that's ok since 13 year old emo boys are basically the same thing :P Death was actually a knee-jerk name I think, although the reason Chuck took up guitar was because his brother died at the time.

If you're interesting in technical metal you can read my article on the subject here: metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=43565

I'd also like to say that although I'm much like the metal fans I just described, the actual post by the band was great.

They're probably some of the best musicians I've heard, and for the idea that they started becoming generic throughout their career is rubbish in my opinion, all bands chance their sound, i mean look at what Slipknot has now become.

And at least they're a band who actually put effort into thinking of their name, something which i find music seems to lack.

These guys are poets, not just a bunch of f***ing metal heads who conform to the standard rules of music.

Jeez, here I go again. I guess I've been feeling more confrontational than usual lately.

pudding100,
First of all, anybody who uses the word "haters" instantly loses any chance of being taken seriously.
Disliking bands you do has nothing to do with having a small mind. This is a site for people to get news on heavy music and discuss it. Sometimes these discussions speak favorably of a band, and sometimes they don't. Trivium, who happen to one of my all time favorite bands (the first metal band I truly loved as a youngster), are constantly shat on, but I don't cry about it and insult everybody who disagrees with me. Now, I might just say that I greatly enjoy the band, and elaborate on why I do. Unfortunately a lot of their fans react to those who find nothing appealing in their music the same way as you do, which probably contributes to their wide dislike in the metal community.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is: grow the f*** up and pull mother's tit out of your mouth. On the internet and in the real world people are going to constantly be saying things you disagree with it. You better get used to it and shut the hell up, or learn a way to make your point in a non-idiotic manner.

Sidenote- Slipknot? Really? They're ok, but are NOT a good way to back up your argument to most metal fans who's tastes kept expanding after 7th grade.

Natsquatch, What I meant was, I've seen a lot of discussions where people immediately disregard something due to it being "overused" or "cliche" even though it may be a valid point, I guess I thought that was what you were doing.

And just curious, what specifically are these three arguments?

Oh and Cynic, I actually love bands like Meshuggah, Between the Buried and Me, Dream Theatre, Mastodon, and such. But those are really stand out bands technicality isn't necessarily a common thing among metal bands. And I wouldn't really consider Dragonforce technical, they just play REEEEAAAAAAAAALLLLLYYYYYYYYY fast! But yeah, I do get what you're sayn, I did forget about bands like Meshuggah and Mastodon when I was thinking of technical metal bands, my bad.

There seems to be a bit of a communication breakdown going on here. Lets go back to square one at post 27.

The first part of that particular comment was in response to post 10 (Before I told you to G#TFO. I know, that wasn't nice.) -

"Don't bash them just because you're a "metal-head" and their music isn't in your niche"

That's what caused me to write this -

"I love how the same three arguments are used over and over again anytime a band somebody likes gets shat on. You're always either a close-minded elitist, "emo", or you listen to Britney Spears."

Such arguments are pretty common among childish posters who are butthurt that their precious band isn't liked by everybody, and it's pretty annoying (or amusing) to everybody else.

Did that clear things up?

I recently got into them, they were a very good band that wasn't afraid to be different, all I can say is if you don't f***ing like them then don't f***ing listen to them, they will be missed.
