Carnal Tomb Drops New Single "Dismembered Flesh"

Carnal Tomb has dropped the complete two-track digital single "Dismembered Flesh" today, on October 8, 2024.

The release of "Dismembered Flesh" also doubles up as the starting signal for Carnal Tomb's upcoming European "Unearthly Decay Tour" in support of Engulfed, which will kick off at the Urban Spree in the death metal maniacs' hometown Berlin tomorrow, on October 9, 2024.

"Dismembered Flesh" is an enthusiastic tribute to seminal Swedish death metal icons DISMEMBER and GRAVE. It features cover versions of Dismember's eponymous track "Dismembered" and the Grave classic "Extremely Rotten Flesh." Carnal Tomb's logo pastiche of the iconic Dismember lettering for this release was personally approved by the Swede's drummer Fred Estby. More...

Mystic Festival 2023 - Day Two

I penciled in a ton of bands for the 2nd full day of Mystic Festival 2023. There were 8 in total but the question was, could I manage to pull it off along with bouncing back and forth between the photo pits? Something that I forgot to mention in my previous report was that the merch prices were higher this year than last. This isn’t a ding on the festival itself, but just the way it is nowadays. There were several bands this year that didn’t bring merchandise at all. Bands are coming to the consensus that it’s not worth passing the merch cuts that are paid to the festivals, onto the fans. Most of the T-shirts cost anywhere from $25 to $30 after you made the conversion from the Polish Zloty to U.S. dollars this year. This was up at least $5 from last year’s average shirt price.

Dismember Fans!

The first band of the day for me was Sweden’s death metal legends, Dismember. I’ve always liked Dismember better than Entombed, so the fact that they are an active band again is incredulous and much needed in the copy/paste death metal omniverse today. The front row was already raging by the time I made it to the photo pit. They started their set with “Overide Of The Overture” and never looked back. Their chainsaw death metal formula has never changed over the past 30 years and this is why their fans are so loyal. Matti Kärki’s smile is a pretty good indication that they aren’t going into hibernation again anytime soon.

Dismember

Next up was Planet of Zeus, Greece’s own version of the band Clutch. This was my first time seeing them and I loved the energy they put out. They were playing with so much vigor, you could have sworn they were on one of the larger stages. The smallish, outdoor Desert Stage area was full of onlookers, so I assume that they have a decent following in Poland. I’m hoping to catch a full set from them sometime on their home turf in Greece.

Planet of Zeus

I made my way to the larger indoor venue for the festival, the Shrine Stage. Even though this venue is about double the size of the Sabbath Stage, it was still cramped and steamy during Grave’s brutal set. Grave’s non-wavering formula of meat grinding stripped down death metal still appeals to today’s death metal crowd. Bassist Tobias Cristiansson didn’t need much effort to fire up the crowd during their set, but his spiked gauntlets and towering frame were sufficient fuel to keep the Grave death metal inferno going throughout their set.

Maryland Deathfest To Reschedule To 2022

Maryland Deathfest is rescheduling their annual event for the 2nd time in the past year to May of 2022. The new dates are now May 27-30. The event organizers posted this statement on their Facebook page:

There is an overload of information in this post, so please take a few minutes to read it all, as it will likely address most of the questions and concerns you may have.

At this point, we don't think it's necessary to go into great detail about why we had to reschedule the festival again. We've been updating you about this possibility for months, so we assume that most of you were expecting this news to be dropped. There is simply no chance that the festival can be staged in its proper form with the majority of the bands (or fans, for that matter) being able to even show up in a short 4 months. It is pretty clear that most, if not all of 2021, is needed for the world to sort itself out to the point that we can enjoy live events again.

The venue situation for 2022 is an ongoing project, but it's starting to look like this could potentially turn into our largest format ever. As of yesterday, we can confirm that we are bringing back Edison Lot, both Rams Head and Soundstage feel like they'll still be open in 2022, and we also have full use of the Power Plant complex, including the outdoor stage there. As of now, the options are plentiful and we plan to utilize all of the venues/stages mentioned above.

As for the bands that we booked in 2019 to play in 2020/2021, the majority of them have once again reconfirmed to play in 2022. Those who have not reconfirmed already and aren't on the flyer shown here fall into one of the categories below.

Bands that need more time to know if they can play in 2022:

Bloodbath - We expect a final answer any day now, as soon as next week.
Negative Approach - We expect a final answer within a month.
Vio-lence - We expect a final answer in 4-6 months.
Coffins - We expect a final answer in 4-6 months.

Bands we haven't received a reply from, so we don't know what their status is:

Phlebotomized
Napalm Raid

Bands that definitely cannot play in 2022 and will need to be replaced:

Grave Desecrator
Panzerfaust
Blaze of Perdition

On the subject of bands, considering the outlook of a larger footprint and the inclusion of outdoor stages in 2022, we will have the space to book more bands on top of the few that need to be replaced. However, we can't immediately dive into booking more bands, as we can't already start throwing around offers to more bands after being completely kicked in the teeth financially by the pandemic over the last year. Eventually, about 20 additional bands will be booked.

The day of show for all originally confirmed bands remains the same.

We expect the lineup for the pre-fest at the Ottobar to remain the same, but we'll follow up shortly to confirm that.

Important info regarding tickets:

- All tickets for 2020/2021 remain valid for the new dates in 2022. No further action is needed.
- If you can't attend the new dates, tickets are transferable to others. If there is someone that you would like to transfer the ticket to, we can assist with that and email them a new PDF ticket.
- As another option for anyone that can't attend the new dates, we can also issue a voucher valid for any future event of ours. These vouchers will have no expiration date and are also transferable to others.

Anyone that needs our assistance with the above options can send us a message here on Facebook or email MDFtickets@gmail.com More...

Maryland Deathfest Not Cancelling 2020 Festival

Maryland Deathfest is adamant they would not cancel this year's edition scheduled to take place May 21-24. Check out the exact verbiage below:

Update regarding Covid-19 and its potential impact on MDF:

It has been 8 days since our last post regarding this. In pandemic terms, that feels more like a month, as the situation has obviously gotten worse on a global scale. We, like everyone else, are watching all of this unfold. We are very much aware of the border closures, travel restrictions, lock downs, and the potential impact that this could have for both attendees and bands.

We need your understanding, patience, and support more than ever right now. Everything we've dedicated the last 18 years of our lives to is at stake, so we're asking everyone to trust that any final decision made will be in the best interest of everyone involved.

One thing we'd like to forbid around here is the use of the world 'cancel'. This is NOT an option, as unrecoverable money is heavily invested into these bands and we simply cannot cancel it and abandon it. However, we do need everyone to start to process the reality of possibly postponing the event to a later date. Should this occur, we would be able to retain about 90% of the line-up (and replace any bands who can't play new dates), rather than waiting this out until the last minute just to deal with the nightmare of possible extended government restrictions, many bands canceling, and many attendees not being able to attend.

We are working tirelessly on this, barely sleeping, and hoping we all find a way to get through this together.

Producing this event is an enormous undertaking as is without a global pandemic unfolding before our eyes, so we appreciate your support and understanding during this dark time. We will update you again as soon as humanly possible once more progress has been made on our end, as we know the uncertainty of the situation has everyone on edge. More...

1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...
