Darkher Uploads Soundgarden Cover

Darkher presents an incredibly beautiful rendering of that in many ways most tragic Soundgarden song "Like Suicide," which is carried by Jayn Maiven's magical voice and haunting instrumentation. The mysterious British artist has furthermore illustrated this touching song with a brilliant video.

More information about the forthcoming MER Redux Series installment "Superunknown Redux" can be found below. The massive double album has been scheduled for release on July 14.

Darkher comments: "When I was approached for my own rendition of 'Like Suicide' by Soundgarden, I felt it was important to do a version which sensitively captured the spirit of the original song", singer and multi-instrumentalist Jayn Maiven explains. "Yet I also decided to take the lyrics musically on a different journey."

Jadd Shickler adds: "The death of Chris Cornell hit fans and musicians like a bomb, myself included", the label manager writes. "In an inexplicable way, it felt almost like I'd lost a personal friend. I did not actually know him, but there was so much longing and melancholy in a lot of his music that one could almost feel that he'd spent his life fighting to hold himself together and eventually just couldn't fight anymore. When the time came to assemble the artists to re-imagine 'Superunknown', it felt important to make a statement about losing him, so I specifically asked Darkher to consider taking on 'Like Suicide'. I knew that her delicate, haunting nature would recast this song as something more tragic and amplify the visceral sense of loss that so many of us feel about Chris being gone. And just as I expected, her rendition is a perfectly heartbroken goodbye."

"Superunknown Redux" tracklisting:

1. Ufomammut - Let Me Drown
2. High Priest feat. Bobby Ferry (16) - My Wave
3. Marissa Nadler - Fell On Black Days
4. Somnuri - Mailman
5. Valley of the Sun - "Superunknown"
6. Frayle - Head Down
7. Spotlights - Black Hole Sun
8. Horseburner - Spoonman
9. Witch Mountain - Limo Wreck
10. Beastwars - The Day I Tried to Live
11. Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows - Kickstand

Craig Locicero Comments On Chris Cornell's Passing

Last night news broke that Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) had passed away, with news arriving this morning that the cause of death was an apparent suicide. Musicians from across the genre spectrum have expressed their condolences or extreme surprise, with Forbidden's Craig Locicero issuing this lengthy statement:

"When Alice told me that Chris Cornell was found dead, it was around midnight last night. After looking around I saw it was evidently true. Shocking and somehow not shocking, but most certainly dauntingly sad for millions of us and especially his loved ones and bandmates. When I awoke this morning it still didn't seem real, but as I opened up Instagram, every post was a Cornell picture with heartfelt words attached to them. It hit me hard in that moment. It's hitting me right now.

"In 1989 Forbidden went to the Foundations Forum in L.A. to do the schmooze thing with hundreds of other metal bands. Hair metal, thrash metal, prog metal, heavy metal...metal metal. It was like what the NAMM show has turned into these days, but worse. Or better... I dunno...
Everybody got a gift bag the first day. I didn't even sift through mine until I got home. At that time I went back to living at my parents house in Fremont for a short stay. I opened up my gift bag and found a bunch of unmemorable crap and one cassette that looked interesting to me. Didn't fit in the cheese bag. That cassette was 'Loud Than Love' by Soundgarden.

"I remember putting it on and immediately feeling transformed into a different world. One far less ridged and more free than what music was turning into commercially, even in my thrash metal genre. A world that wasn't laid into perfect lines, but was splashed in colors and emotion. Less processed, more raw emotion and power. More...

Graveyard To Support Soundgarden

Swedish classic rock superstars Graveyard have been confirmed as direct support for the upcoming European run of Soundgarden. Graveyard comments:

"We've been pretty fucking fortunate with the bands we've had the honour to open for. It's like taking a walk through our record collections, or just through rock history. When you list some of them, it comes off as pretty unreal – Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Motorhead. And now - Soundgarden! Not so superunknown guys these days. And with the words of a californian rock dude: Pretty fucking bad ass musicians that can deliver a bunch of face melting jams and shred like there's no tomorrow!

"There isn't really much more to say than that. Of course we're super excited to head out on tour with Soundgarden. In a way it's quite logic. If you think about what the roots of their and our music are. We certainly got one or two things in common there, so hopefully people will see it as good match making?“

Column

Sunday Old School: Soundgarden

Since Sunday Old School almost always finishes it's month of sundays with a column about a group from the glam metal scene, it always seems so natural to kick the next month off with one of the so-called "grunge" acts, given it was the next stage in popular rock music. And who better to start November off than Soundgarden, whose reunion has been of the most anticipated in recent times? Soundgarden was formed from the ashes of a band named The Shemps, which featured singing drummer, Chris Cornell and bass player Hiro Yamamoto. The two kept in contact after The Shemps’ demise and were soon joined by guitarist Kim Thayil, who moved to Washington with Yamamoto and future Sub Pop founder, Bruce Pavitt, from Park Forest, Illinois. The trio adopted the name, Soundgarden from a sculpture next to Magnuson Park, Seattle and soon became a four piece, when they hired drummer Scott Sundquist in order for Cornell to focus on his vocals. This lineup would continue for around a year and make the first Soundgarden recordings, which surfaced on a compilation album named, "Deep Six," before Sundquist left to be replaced by Skin Yard drummer, Matt Cameron. The band’s live performances made them one of the stand out groups in an area which had many quality bands, and it was thanks to their blistering presence that KCMU DJ Jonathan Poneman offered to contribute twenty thousand dollars to Sub Pop Records, in order to fund a Soundgarden release, which came in 1987 in the form of the single, "Hunted Down," which also featured a highly regarded b-side in, "Nothing To Say."

The band released two further EPs, "Screaming Life" and "Fopp" through Sub Pop before deciding to sign with SST Records for their first full length effort, snubbing the interest of major labels in the process. They then released their first LP, "Ultramega OK" on Halloween, 1988, and soon found themselves regularly on MTV, thanks to the music video for "Flower," as well as eventually being nominated for a Grammy award for Best Metal Performance 1990, in addition to touring overseas for the first time. Following the "Ultramega OK" tours, the band got to work on their second album, during which they claim ideas weren’t flowing freely from all members, leaving Cornell to write the bulk of it. The second album surfaced in September 1989 as, "Louder Than Love" and would prove to be their last record with Yamamoto, who left to go back to college after he felt he was unable to contribute to the band anymore. He was replaced by former Nirvana guitarist, Jason Everman, and the band hit the road again, this time in support of Canadian progressive metal act, Voivod, with Faith No More opening the shows. There was initially some problems with the distribution for "Louder Than Love," with some retailers taking umbrage with the lyrics to the songs, "Big Dumb Sex" and "Hands All Over," but nonetheless, it became the band’s first record to hit the Billboard 200, peaking at number 108.
