Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.

On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.

More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica To Re-Issue Albums On Vinyl

The following message has been posted on the official Metallica website:

"While we're finishing up the new album, we told the dudes at the record company we thought it might be cool to dust off the old tapes and get all retro with some vinyl re-releases... First up are the first two albums (duh!?), "Kill ?Em All" and "Ride the Lightning," coming out on April 15 in North America and pretty fucking close to that in the rest of the world.
There will be two versions...one like the original on a single disc spinning at 33 1/3, the other a two disc, 180 gram vinyl, 45 rpm package all in a double gatefold. The music was half speed mastered from the original analog tapes at Mobile Fidelity to bring you audiophile quality.

Both versions will be available in the online store here and over at Met Club. Oh, and in case you were wondering, "Master" and "Justice" will obviously be next and should be coming out on vinyl in June."

Deicide, Dope, RATM Music Used To Torture Iraqis

According to a news article on Mother Jones, music by bands including Deicide (who's song "Fuck Your God" is declared the most used), Dope, Drowning Pool, Metallica, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine, Hedpe and others has been used in American military prisons and on bases as torture devices. The songs are said to induce sleep deprivation, "prolong capture shock," disorient detainees during interrogations, and are apparently handy for drowning out screams. Based on a leaked interrogation log, news reports, and the accounts of soldiers and detainees, here are some of the songs that guards and interrogators reportedly chose: More...

KISS And Metallica To Play Bulgaria Show

According to News.bg, METALLICA and KISS will play in Bulgaria this spring/summer.

KISS will perform on May 16 at Akademik Stadium in Sofia, one day after making a stop in Belgrade, Serbia.

It is rumored that METALLICA demanded $1.5 million to play in the country, although this information has not been corroborated by an official source.

KISS will perform in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday, March 16 to close the 2008 Grand Prix.

METALLICA has been announced as one of the headliners for the 2008 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, scheduled for June 12 through June 15 in Manchester, Tennessee. METALLICA will headline the bill on June 13. A statement at the band's web site said in part, "The Bonnaroo gang does an amazing job at giving you everything you could want/need for a great weekend...so hang out, soak up the vibe, and embrace the whole experience."

The choice of METALLICA as a headliner is bound to cause controversy, given the festival's more relaxed vibe and past leanings toward jam bands, indie acts and prog-rock. Although TOOL performed last year, the METALLICA audience is often decidedly more raucous.

MetClub, the official METALLICA fan club web site, last week sent the following e-mail to its members:

"Hopefully you all know by now, the boys will be heading back to Europe this summer... Just a friendly 'heads up' that a few more shows are coming your way as we're getting ready to announce dates on the second part of their summer vacation. Most of these shows will have pre-sales for Clubbers only, so keep watching MetClub for more details. As for you Americans who have been having a good moan, we'll have a little something for you next week. No more hints for now..."

METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently spoke with Revolver magazine about the band's ninth studio album, which is expected out later this year and will be its first all-new effort since 2003's "St. Anger". Ulrich told the magazine that the group's new material "is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds," adding, "There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." Ulrich also said that the album has more in common with some of the group's '80s releases than more recent offerings like "St. Anger" and "Load".

Ulrich wouldn't agree that the yet-to-be-titled disc is a full-blown return to the past, saying, "I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, 'What the fuck? Lars lied to us!' But it feels that way to me."

The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted METALLICA to use classic efforts like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as "reference points" for its new songs.

There's no word yet on an exact release date for the new METALLICA CD, although a late summer release is likely.

New Metallica Album Release Postponed

Sources from Metallica's record label reportedly told Stereo Warning that the release of the band's new album has once again been pushed back. The up-coming follow-up to St. Anger now apparently won't be available until September this year. Lars Ulrich made the first claim that it would see light in February, but then the release date changed to April. That, too, changed when the band was still in the studio months later. The last time Metallica took so long in the studio resulted in the "Black Album."

Metallica And RATM Rumoured For Reading Festival

According to eFestivals.co.uk, METALLICA and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE are rumored to be two of the three American headliners slated to perform at this year's Reading and Leeds Festivals, which will happen, as usual, in England over the August Bank holiday weekend — from Friday, August 22 to Sunday, August 24.

There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes." The drummer also revealed that producer Rick Rubin, working with the band for the first time, wanted METALLICA to use classic efforts like "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets" as "reference points" for its new songs.

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE — vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, drummer Brad Wilk and bassist Tim Commerford — released three politically charged albums: 1992's self-titled debut, 1996's "Evil Empire", 1999's "Battle of Los Angeles" and its 2000 covers album "Renegades".

It split in 2000 after the singer decided to record a solo album. The rest of the band formed AUDIOSLAVE with SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell. The Harvard-educated Morello also recently released a solo album under the alias THE NIGHTWATCHMAN.
