Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica Bassist Speaks About "Big Four" Tour
When recently talking to Metromix, Metallica bass player Robert Trujillo confirmed that the band is trying to put together a tour between themselves, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, also known as the "Big Four" of Thrash Metal. Speaking on the idea, he said; "I think it's great. We've had a few different conversations on the subject. . . . There's a lot of history there. I think it'd be great for metal. I don't think all four bands have played together at the same time." Pressed as to whether the rumors of the tour were true, Trujillo answered, "There is, but nothing's concrete. It's not a sealed deal. We're working on it."
Metallica Plays Marin County Debut Warm-Up Show
Metallica warmed up for the next leg of the World Magnetic tour with a concert in their backyard, playing for the very first time in their home town of San Rafael, CA, just north of San Francisco.
Metallica's Marin County debut at the Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium was an appearance as part of a fundraiser for the Marin Museum of History's Marin Rocks exhibition slated to open in 2010. The Marin Rocks museum is set to open summer 2010 in downtown San Rafael, and will include exhibits celebrating Marin's rock music heritage, performance spaces and educational programs for young people in music and the arts.
Metallica's James Hetfield has lived in Marin since the mid-'80s. He bought a 500-acre spread in San Rafael, he lives there with his wife, Francesca, and three children, Cali, Castor and Marcella, ages 11, 9 and 7.
James Hetfield lives a quiet, low-key life in Marin County, and is always content to stay under the radar. But as the museum plans hit financial trouble, James Hetfield came to the rescue and offered to hold a Metallica concert with proceeds going to the museum. Tickets for the 2,000 seat Marin Veterans Memorial Auditorium venue went between $100 and $350 and sold out in ten minutes.
"We've never done a public show. I don't know why. Probably because there aren't that many places to play in Marin that are large enough to satisfy enough people," James Hetfield said to the Independent Journal. "But in the last few years, basically after 'St. Anger,' we started getting more into public service, giving back to the community, discovering how good that feels."
"Growing up struggling in a dysfunctional family and being able to turn to music as my escape and therapy and savior is dear to my heart," James Hetfield of Metallica said. "So introducing kids to music and having a safe clean place for the youth of Marin to come in and jam, talk about their problems and write songs together really excites me."
"It's very easy in Marin. Most of the people who stop me are very polite, saying things like, `Hey, James, what's up?' That's pretty much it. The people who get star struck or clingy are tourists, and they associate their trip to Marin with me. Everyone else sees me as a resident of this county. It's very easy to kick back and be an equal."
Moonalice, featuring Marin musicians Pete Sears and Barry Sless, opened the show. Metallica came out a little after 9:30 p.m., James Hetfield thanked the crowd, saying: "We appreciate you coming out to support the ancestry and the history of music in Marin County."
The setlist of Metallica's show was as follows:
Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fuel
Harvester of Sorrow
Fade to Black
Broken, Beat, and Scarred
Cyanide
Sad But True
One
Master of Puppets
Battery
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Hit the Lights
Seek and Destroy

Austrian Death Machine Posts Teaser Online
As I Lay Dying frontman Tim Lambesis and California frontman Ahhnold are back for round two with the release of AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE’s "Double Brutal," the follow up to 2008’s highly successful release, "Total Brutal." This two-disc set features one disc of all new heavy tracks in the tradition of all of Ahhnold’s greatest cinematic moments and a second disc of cover songs including songs originally performed by METALLICA, MEGADETH, MISFITS, JUDAS PRIEST and more, with cover art once again being tackled by Ed Repka (MEGADETH, DEATH, NOFX, NUCLEAR ASSAULT, etc), and is set for a North American release on September 29, 2009. The album also features guest performances by BUZ MCGRATH (UNEARTH), ANDREW TAPLEY (THE HUMAN ABSTRACT), JAMES GERICKE (DEATH BY STEREO), MARK MACDONAL (MERCURY SWITCH), ROCKY GRAY (LIVING SACRIFICE), RUSTY COOLEY and more.
A new audio clip featuring sneak peeks at tracks taken from Double Brutal is currently available on Austrian Death Machine's MySpace page.
“Sometimes being stereotypically metal is fitting. I'm not trying to break new ground; I just want to break people's necks... and have fun doing it,” comments AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE creator Tim Lambesis.

Thrash Metal's "Big Four" To Tour?
According to Slayer guitarist Kerry King, a dream tour featuring Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax could well be in the works. Speaking to Britain's Metal Hammer magazine, King stated:
“I’ve heard people referencing Lars. I don’t know Lars that well and I haven’t heard it from Lars but apparently he’s talking to somebody about it. Maybe us, Metallica, Megadeth (and), I think he even threw in Anthrax and I said in this day and age, I know we had that time together but how do you leave out Machine Head? There’s better options than Anthrax and that’s nothing against Anthrax, but they’ve just been in pieces for quite some time and that doesn’t make as much sense to me."
The closest the world has got to having the "Big Four" tour together came in 1991 when Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax were joined on tour by the up and coming Alice In Chains, who stepped in for Bay Area thrashers Death Angel, on the Clash Of The Titans tour. The tour also went to Europe where Megadeth and Slayer performed without Anthrax and Alice In Chains but with Suicidal Tendencies and Testament.

Mustaine Revels In #1 Placement In Guitarist Book
Metallica Blog Magnetic has posted an excerpt of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine's interview with Classic Rock magazine about his #1 placement in Joel McIver's recent book, "The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists." As usual, since he was fired from Metallica in 1983, Metallica is the topic of many of his interviews.
How did it feel to be No.1 in Joel McIver's recent book, The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists?
"It was especially sweet when I found out that Joel has written books on Metallica. I looked at my copy of the book – I wasn't on the cover or the back. I figured I'd be somewhere like No.69. So I thumbed through it; it's a really comprehensive, good book. I got to No.50 and I thought, `Am I in here?' I'd been told that I was, but not which position. So I got No.16 and I saw Hetfield. I thought, `Wow' because I respect James. I'm a better lead player than he is, but he's one of the three best rhythm players in the world."
The other two being?
"Malcolm Young [of AC/DC] and myself. Malcolm kept it basic but brought a whole new style of rhythm playing to the world. So I got to the Top 10… I still wasn't in there. Every page I turned, I became more excited. I get to No.5 and it's Kirk [Hammett], and I thought, `Thank you, God'."
"At that point it didn't matter [which position I was]. To be better than both of them [Hetfield and Hammett] meant so much – it's been one of the pet peeves of my career and I've never known how to deal with it. I didn't realise that it has had so much bearing upon my life. Then I got to No.2 and it was John Petrucci [of Dream Theater] and I froze. I was No.1.
"What made it better still is that the guy wrote: `This isn't about Dave as a person because he's been a cock' – [interjects with a bray of laughter] – `These four pages are about his guitar playing, which is the best. There are people who are better at one thing that Mustaine does, and others that are better than another, but no-one who's as good at everything'. All I thought was… I win!"
In a way did it represent closure?
"That's it exactly. I'm not addicted [to anything] anymore. And I'm no longer struggling with past demons from another band [Metallica]. That game has ended. Lars [Ulrich] called me up and offered the chance to come to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame thing and not be inducted, to sit in the audience [instead].
"'It's only for people who've been on the records' is what I was told. That would have been awkward. So I didn't go. There are obviously some unresolved issues on Lars' part. But you know what? If God wants me in the Hall Of Fame, I will be there."
Dave Mustaine Slams Lars Ulrich... Again
In the September 2009 issue of U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine (see cover below), Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine explains the reasons behind his decision to turn down Metallica's invitation to attend their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Mustaine, who was a member of Metallica for less than two years, from 1981 to 1983, before being dismissed and replaced by Kirk Hammett, tells the magazine, "Lars [Ulrich, Metallica drummer] said, 'If you were on the record, you got inducted; if you weren't on the record, you didn't,' and would I come along and hang out and watch them get inducted? I was like, 'Dude, that's so typical!' It makes for the same kind of mentality as a guy watching some other guy fuck his girlfriend. I just said, 'I'm flattered and I'm proud of you guys and I wish you well. I'll be there if I'm being inducted, but if I'm gonna watch, then I've got better things to do.'"
Mustaine adds, "To say that I'm not on the record, well, I'd say that there are 40 million fans with Megadeth and Metallica records in their collections that would say that Dave is on the Metallica records because my name's on there [in the songwriting credits], but I guess Lars never really looked past the word 'Ulrich.' He just stopped there and read it again, over and over and over!
"Bottom line is, I'm going to get into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame one way or another and he can't keep me out! When I do, I'm going to ask him to induct us and I'm gonna give eggs to everyone in the front row! [Laughs]" More...
