Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine Slams Metallica Drummer Lars Ulrich... Again

Band Photo: Metallica (?)
In the September 2009 issue of U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine (see cover below), Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine explains the reasons behind his decision to turn down Metallica's invitation to attend their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Mustaine, who was a member of Metallica for less than two years, from 1981 to 1983, before being dismissed and replaced by Kirk Hammett, tells the magazine, "Lars [Ulrich, Metallica drummer] said, 'If you were on the record, you got inducted; if you weren't on the record, you didn't,' and would I come along and hang out and watch them get inducted? I was like, 'Dude, that's so typical!' It makes for the same kind of mentality as a guy watching some other guy fuck his girlfriend. I just said, 'I'm flattered and I'm proud of you guys and I wish you well. I'll be there if I'm being inducted, but if I'm gonna watch, then I've got better things to do.'"
Mustaine adds, "To say that I'm not on the record, well, I'd say that there are 40 million fans with Megadeth and Metallica records in their collections that would say that Dave is on the Metallica records because my name's on there [in the songwriting credits], but I guess Lars never really looked past the word 'Ulrich.' He just stopped there and read it again, over and over and over!
"Bottom line is, I'm going to get into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame one way or another and he can't keep me out! When I do, I'm going to ask him to induct us and I'm gonna give eggs to everyone in the front row! [Laughs]"
Mustaine publicly declined Metallica's invitation to attend the April 4 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony, citing European tour commitments, but issued a statement congratulating the band.
Regarding why Mustaine wasn't being inducted into the Hall Of Fame along with the current members of Metallica, Ulrich told The Plain Dealer in an April 2009 interview, "You've got to kind of cap it somewhere. Dave Mustaine never played on any Metallica records. No disrespect to him. But there [were] half a dozen other people that were in the lineup in the early days.
"We thought . . . the fair thing to do would be to include anybody that played on a Metallica record.
"Dave Mustaine was in the band for 11 months, predominantly in 1982. . . . I'm not trying to play it down. I have nothing but respect and admiration for his accomplishments since."

Oz: Yeah, and whats even better is that his "I'm over Metallica" statement came about a week before this crap. Seriously... Will Dave ever figure out when to shut the fvck up? Also worth mentioning is that on the magazine cover, they printed Metallica's logo above Dave's head. You KNOW that pi$$ed Dave off! LOL.

Alright now this guy is starting to get on my nerves a little bit....i agree with the fact that he shouldnt have been included in the HOF ceremonies...he was in the band about a year only and was thrown out...i dont see why he continues to b!tch about it.....dave was b!tchen about journos and their questions. All he has to do is say when asked about any metallica issues is basically i wish the guys the best of luck, ive moved on, next question...is it that fahqn hard to do? You dave haters and heckelers out their im starting to see your point

What is wrong with you people!!!!
I think that dave is right. He has alot to do with metallica and that we co-wrote 6 of the songs between killem all and Ride the lightning. He should be in the R&R hall of fame just because of his writing controbutions. He helped make the metallica sound. Now the part where dave denies metallicas invitation. How is this being an a$$hole??? How would you feel if you deserve to be on in hall of fame and your just back stage watching the whole thing go down. I wouldnt want to go. Plus he said 'I'm flattered and I'm proud of you guys and I wish you well. Also he was finishing with a tour.. Job>>>>>>watching a band you were in and played a major role in getting elected into the hall of fame. Oh yes and the part where dave says he was going to try and get lars to announce them into the hall of fame was a joke people. Like when lars did it in a press conference before they were elected. A reporter asked James who was going to elect them and he said bill ward from sabbath. Lars said Dave Mustaine and everyone laughed including himself. I do agree that dave does probably need to let go of the whole metallica thing but he does have a point, and that hes not trying to be an a$$hole he is just saying the blatent truth.

David Bateson, we are aware of what you said. we are, however, tired of dave smacktalking about it. i agree with him that he should be in the rrhof due to his contributions on kill'em all. but, dave needs to quit being so whiny about it. we are on his side. but sometimes, he just sounds so dam whiny.

Metallica slogged near 30 years of touring and album writing and Dave was around for less than 1 and played on no records. From the 125 or so songs Metallica have written, he has partial credit on 5. Metallica did the right thing and still he complains - Can you imagine how much he would have whined if he hadn't been asked to come at all?

18. writes:
^^^ Well put. We all know Metallica has sucked since the early 90's, and as far as I'm concerned they've completely sold out. I can understand why Mustaine wants credit for his contributions, but any true metal head with a decent taste in music knows his work in Megadeth blows Metallica out of the water. The day Dave realizes his superior musical abilities and gets past something that happened 25 years ago, the better.

19. writes:
brandedcfh420, I dont believe he was whining about not being in the rrof but making a statement. And a true statement at that. And after you said "dave, pull the tampon out of your vagina!!" how can you be on his side?
Now Cynic, it was 6 songs he has had credit on not 5. As for the the 125 songs that metallica has done without him. How many of those songs are good or even decent? Kill em, Lighting and Justice where great albums with the Black album being ok. but everything after pretty much sucked, and that includes DM. My point is that the songs that he has credit on are very good songs and even defined there early sound. As for metallica doing the right thing? I disagree sir.
the goose goblin, I agree with all your comments sir :)
As for megafan 666, i disagree that metallica sucks. There early stuff is really good Even though im not a big fan of the heralded MOP, They are still one of my fave bands. I must admit that they are extremely overated.

Mr. Bateson: I noticed you conveniently left Master Of Puppets off your list. That had absolutely no Dave Cumstain on it and it was arguably the best album Metallica ever made. The problem is that Dave will never let his beef go with Metallica. EVER! For fvck sake man, how long are you going to hold on to this demon and let it control your emotions? I loved Killing, Peace Sells and Rust in Peace. Past that I couldn't care less. But the man has children of his own now and yet he still acts like a child himself. The man is a douche rocket plain and simple. Had you ever seen the real Dave you'd agree as well.

Six songs over two albums is hardly a reason to be heralded as the greatest part of Metallica. Bud Prager co-wrote some songs with Megadeth but I bet he wouldn't kick up a fuss if Megadeth was inducted into the RRHOF and he wasn't invited. Nikki Sixx co-wrote songs with Drowning Pool on their last album, but that doesn't mean he should be a part of their history that much. Dave Mustaine is the same man who claims that Kerry King copied his guitar style and basically said Pantera was nothing more than a carbon clone of Megadeth. He writes great music sure, but he does he deserve the respect he feels he should have? Does he bollocks.

one advice dave get over it
nobody cares about you crying
stick with the coffee
wonder if you sell some if you are allways a cry baby
drink your coffee and shut the f*** up
did you try to sell some to lars you can both sit in lars
kitchen and get a cup of java
and cry like two old ladys
would be not a bad idea if james kicks the sh** out of him
than he has somthing to cry about
indeed funny the cover photo

Mr.Blind greed, I believe you left out a classic megadeth record So Far So Good So What not including Countdown,Youthanasia,Stystem, and United Abominations. Yes there is a reason i left MoP out of the list, that is because i think it is a mediocre album. I dont feel like typing why the reasons im not a big fan of MoP but i do agree with most of what this critic has to say. http://www.metal-archives.com/review.php?id=547#29518
Hmmm seems like im repeating myself. He is not complaining, whining,b****ing, or even acting like a child abut being kicked out of metallica he is just making a point on what Lars had said.
Diamond of Oz- . On the Get Thrashed Documentry i think dave was trying to say that Kerry King was greatly influenced by him and learned some stuff when he was in megadeth. He didnt see he completly copied his style. Which they sound nothing alike. I agree he isnt always right on everthing such as the pantera comment. But he is right about the rrhof. Even though i dont think he said that, if you could link that comment from somewhere that would be very kind. Although Train of Consequences does sound alot like Coyboys From Hell. Now onto the main part of your argument. The 6 songs that he co-wrote where the absolute classic stuff of metallica. Metal Militia,Phantom Lord, Four Horsemen, Jump in the Fire, Ride the Lighting, Call of Ktulu, all very amazing songs, and all that defined there early sound. The Songs Bud Prager has co-write credit on is from risk which blew balls, as we can all agree on. But your right if dave got into metallica for his co-writing credits that would mean if dave got in also for megadeth then he would have to include Bud. I dont care if bud gets in there with them and neither should dave, but good god man... give credit where credit is do. On a side note im glad that megadeth sounds nothing like pantera because pantera isnt that good. I do like Power Metal an Cowboys from Hell though. :D

I would choose Dave over Ul-rich anyday. I'm not a fan of Dave by any means, but If I were in his shoes I would have done the exact same thing. I think Dave just wants the acknowledgment.
I AM tired of listening to him b**** though. Chris Broderick > Hammet ANY DAY. Especially today.

So all in all, this is what happens when you overpay entertainers; they turn into whiny brats and the only reason we care is because they play (or used to play) good music? One of many reasons I've always proposed a salary cap on entertainers, but that's just my opinion. It would probably humble those morons if they weren't living in giant mansions and had their own studios, etc.

40. writes:
David Bateson will you please pay attention to what Branded is saying, he is saying he agrees with him Mustaine but he is a whiny f***. It's the truth, as a musician he is an absolute genius, but his personality basically sucks..add alcohol to the equation and you can see why he was kicked out. Yes he was hard done by I wish he'd never left but then you wouldn't have had Megadeth..
He should have let it go a long time ago, because it has wasted FAR too much nervous energy is his life and overshadowed his enormous success in his own band. It's obvious that he is a hard person to get along with because he has fueded with all the major metal bands and he has ALOT of trouble holding his own members. Megadeth might as well change it's name to Mustaine..even Ellefson had a falling out with him and you'd argue that he was his most loyal band mate. As for Broderick , i doubt he'll stick around long either really.

41. writes:
Hey...I love both of these bands. Always have. There's always been a little tension between the two, so this is no surprise. If anything, Dave's feelings for the whole Metallica thing have helped him; it is been a driving force that made him an even better artist. He could have simply slipped away into obscurity, but he didn't. Instead, he formed his own top notch metal band. Whether Metallica is better then Megadeth is subjective. I always put Metallica ahead, but go listen to Rust in Peace and tell me they did not significantly contribute to the metal scene. Watching these two fight is like watching two good friends fight; I want them to stop, but it doesn't make me like either of them less.

hahahah....this just makes me laugh... Is he SERIOUSLY still going on about this sh**??? f***! Yea, we remember his part in Metallica, already. Need he remind us every god damn 6 months?? I personally hate Dave Mustaine. I think he's an annoying f*** that needs to get a life. I understand his not accepting the invite, but he should take it for what it was - a recognition of his contribution. If they really had wanted to f*** him over, I think ignoring him completely would've done the job much more completely. Megadeth is nothing but a poor man's Metallica anway, and always will be. Get the f*** over it.
50. writes:
I really don't know about all this, kind of on the fence. I personally think that Lars Ulrich is the biggest douche bag in metal, however Dave should choose his words wisely so then it doesn't seem like his only point is that he was a part of Metallica. On a smaller scale, I have helped in songwriting with bands in my area, but that doesn't mean that if one day they end up reaching that summit, ill expect to be included as well! Metallica's induction is reflective of an entire career, not some ideas you brought up while the record was being cut. I love Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, but I wouldn't say that they were the kickers in the decision to induct Metallica. I believe that Dave will get in from his own success though. I also think that the real point he was trying to make was that lars is an asswipe and having him be the one to invite him, made it seem like he was rubbing Dave's nose in it. One thing I can say in Megadeth's defense is that at least they can still tear it up and play their music like always. I saw Metallica and Machine Head in DC and lars' playing was dreadful. The part in "One" with the speedy double-kick had to played on bass by truillo because lars just can't do it anymore. Sorry Lars, you're not what you once were.
52. writes:
Dave > Lars
As much as dave makes himself look like he cant get over the subject of himself and Metallica, part of the reason we hear about it so much is because he gets asked about it all the time... i agree it gets old, but i dont hate dave for it, plus, lars is a douche and he single handedly turned Death Magnetic from a solid album to an "I can take how obnoxious the drums are" album

57. writes:
#49 - Um...is it really that surprising that Lars can no longer play drums with the same vigor at age 45 as he did at 24?? Jesus, people age. As far as him being an ass, of course he's an a$$hole! He's Lars! Who would he be without the attitude and f*** you's? Would you rather be some f***ing woose that kowtowed to everyone's whims? f*** that. I like him being an a$$hole. But of course, maybe that's because I'm an a$$hole myself.. eh, either way, people need to get over their whole grudge over Napster. Yea, it sucked when we actually started to have to pay for music (or, in some peoples cases, found alternate p2p programs), but it's kinda like Dave: GET OVER IT!!!
60. writes:
DAVE HELP RIGHT MOST OF THE SONGS IN KILL EM ALL THEY DID GIVE HIM CREDIT IN THE BACK OF THE ALBUM THEY DID NOT USE DAVE TO RECORD THE ALBUM BUT THEY USED HIS WORK AND HE SHOULD HAVE ALSO GONE TO THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME ALONG WITH METALLICA BUT NO WORRIES MEGADETH WILL BE IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME IN NO TIME

72. writes:
y'know, i have a lot of respect for dave, but this is just pathetic. lars is civil and reasonable about it, and mustaine just slams him as if he'd been insulted. this is just childish - i thought he was past this - unless of course it was due to interviewers forcing him into corners, as he claims =/
ah well. dave is jealous of metallica. old news, move on people ...
78. writes:
Ah HEM!!!... Did someone call me by name (a$$hole)? I really don't mind SOME of Daves music (see post #20), but the problem is that he is so full of himself that he just can't shut the fvck up and play his good stuff (he bores me to tears with his latest fluff metal). He has to run his mouth and act like everyone cares about Dave's point of view. What's more... The man simply can't sing. He sings because it caresses his ego and also because no professional front man would ever put up with his sh!t long enough to get a song out. Quite simply put; Dave Cumstain is an egotistical maniac set on Metallica domination.
79. writes:
^Always glad to see another proud a$$hole join the club! haha
And I haven't been able to listen to dave since...oh...'85? hahah Sorry, but I always thought Killing, Peace Sells, and Rust In Peace sucked. But that's just me. They were corny as hell, and I just couldn't stomach them. As far as I'm concerned, he's ALWAYS been "fluff metal". Add on top of that the fact that he's annoying and whiny....well, frankly, it renders him completely useless.

80. writes:
i enjoy both bands but i find myself straying towards enjoying megadeth more, my reasons? i find that after cliff burton died, metallica went very fancyboy metal with kirk hammets modeled looks and his expensive perms And metallica have been such asses to dave, unnecessarily so.
Dave compared to the members of metallica rarely comes out with any smaltalk.
i think both parties need to drop it and quit baiting each other and concentrate on making decent records.

alyssamwbc: Join the club? I am a founding member. 1985? It sounds as if you and I are close to the same age. I met Dave in Hollywood back in 87. He was high on heroin and drinking vodka at the Whiskey. When my band came off the stage, the bartender told me that "someone important" wanted to talk to me and pointed to a booth in the corner. He gave me a t-shirt (actually he threw it at me) with vic on the front shooting a huge machine gun and above vic it said "I Kill For Thrills". He said that it would be the title of their next album and acted as though I should worship his every word. At the time I liked Megadeth, but I can tell you that Dave came very close to getting his a$$ kicked that day. The man is a fvckwad. But I still respect his best work.

hahah...wow, THIS ^^^ is why I come here. There's always something to make me laugh. hahah Whether it be Kiss promoting a bag of Cheetos with their ugly mugs on the front or smartass comments, I'm never anything less than amused. hehe
Blindgreed1: I'm not as old as I may seem. I'll not divulge my exact age (a woman has to have SOME secrets), but I've been raised on metal my whole life. I was, admittedly, a child when Killing came out, but, even then, I still preferred my cousin's Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath tapes to Megadeth. It was an innate reaction, I guess.
In reference to your unfortunate run-in with Mr. f***wit Himself, I'd have loved to have seen that! haha You should've let him have it, maybe he'd still be complaining about it enough today to have made you a small fortune! haha Lord knows if you had kicked his ass, he's still be bringing it up. That guy knows how to carry a grudge like no other.
