Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Jim Marshall: The Legend Who Shaped Heavy Music
When light hits the stage even before the band does, theres only one thing that signifies you are about to have your face ripped off by a literal wall of sound. You see it in almost every huge rock and metal arena show. Its a vision pursued by any musician who dreams of playing live, and playing loud. As a kid I gazed at the stage in wonder, mesmerized at these giant black boxes stacked on top of one another. As soon as the band started playing, you could swear everything you heard was coming from these giant stacks of sound. They stood out almost as a member of the band themselves. All thats is left after the show ends, is a snapshot taken by your memory. The image of the band on stage, and the image of a giant stack of amplifiers with one name draped across the front, Marshall. More...

3D Metallica Movie Currently In Production
Amidst circulating rumors of a pending Metallica 3D movie the band has now checked in with the following update, confirming the production of the film.
"Happy New Year!!! As you know, we generally make it a policy not to comment on gossip or rumors, but we also pride ourselves on being first with Metallica news. So, with that said, the more astute of you may have noticed a couple of mentions in trade publications, and most recently in the new issue of Rolling Stone, that a Metallica 3D movie is in the works.
"We’re here to tell you that, yes, there is indeed a 3D project in the very early stages of production! We wish we could tell you more right now, but we don’t have all the finer points nailed down just yet. What we can tell you is that we are planning on being in a theatre near you sometime in 2013.
"Welcome to 2012. We’re pretty psyched about the year ahead."

Metallica Fans Threatening To Shoot Lou Reed
Lou Reed says that Metallica fans have threatened to shoot him after the sour reaction to their "Lulu" collaboration (reviewed here). Reed told USA Today that the metal fans "are threatening to shoot me, and that's only because I showed up." "They haven't even heard the record yet, and they're recommending various forms of torture and death," he added.
The negative response to "Lulu" does not concern Reed:
"I don't have any fans left," he says. "After Metal Machine Music (1975), they all fled. Who cares? I'm essentially in this for the fun of it."
Lars Ulrich leapt to the defence of the singer:
"This is something they've never heard. Nobody hears rhythms or delivers poetry the way Lou does. It's not for everyone, but I think it's a fantastic record."
Reed called Metallica his "metal blood brothers," and even hinted that there could be more from the collaboration if he gets his way. "No-one wants 'Lulu Part 2', but on Radio Lou, in my head where I hear these songs, I want more of it," he said.
Metallica Footage With Mercyful Fate Posted
