Paul Bostaph Leaves Testament, Begins New Band With Former Anthrax Singer

Band Photo: Testament (?)
Terrorizer magazine reports that Testament singer Chuck Billy confirmed that drummer Paul Bostaph, who is out of action recovering from a serious injury, has left the band. The split appears to be amicable. Gene Hoglan filled in for Bostaph on the band's recent tour with Anthrax and Death Angel, and he is also providing the drumming for Testament's forthcoming album "The Dark Roots of Earth."
Billy commented to Terrorizer, "We just found our last week Paul Bostaph is not coming back to the band, he's starting his own new project and doing some things on his own. So we're actually going to be holding a couple of auditions with probably small group of drummers that we chose - we don't want to have a revolving drum stool, we have a new record we want a permanent drummer."
Ironically, Bostaph's new project is with former, and disgruntled, Anthrax singer Dan Nelson called Black Gates.

Wow,i figured something was up. What a poor career move by Bostaph. He's definately one of my favorite drummers,so this news sucks big time! By the sounds of it Big Gene wont be asked to join permantly, which also blows. Be interesting to see who they get to fill the position. Testaments on a roll, new album coming out, never sounded better live,so hopefully they can get a permanent guy soon!

Disappointed, but not entirely surprised.
I was hoping he'd stick with 'em after he healed up.
Per the Terrorizer article:
"We're still buddies, it's just that Paul feels at this point in his career he wants to be in a little more in control of the artistic creation of the songs and with his new project they are all involved with that process whereas with our group Eric [Peterson] is pretty much the main songwriter and that's just the way its been with us for 25 years."
If that's the case, I can't blame him. With only one primary songwriter, it makes it tough to find a worthy replacement. One one hand, you really want a creative person on the drum throne. On the other hand, you want that person to be content limiting their creative input to drums. That type of drummer is out there, but it limits their choices.

I'm not trying to be mean but I was never a huge fan to start with.
I always felt his playing was a tad one dimensional.
Never liked what he did with Slayer.
As for Gene?
I like him much better with Fear Factory.
He's too good to stay with one band.
Why don't they get Barker back?

I liked what Paul did with Slayer. He did his job and shut the fvck up. He's a drummer, he hits sh!t with wood. Anxious to hear what he and Dan put together actually and not even a little bit concerned about Testament finding an epic skinz man. Maybe our very own MHD101 can take a shot. Or even DJ if he can find his way out of the bible belt. I hear the kid's lookin for a new gig.
Much love to my metal drummer brethren, but you guys know it's true. lol. ;-)

Dude, thanks for the interest!
We definitely want to get a full line-up so we can play local shows. (I've done the instrumental band before and crowds react better with a vocalist.)
Hopefully, we'll have things rolling this coming year and get some of the songs recorded. I'll keep ya informed when/if that happens and send something your way.
ON TOPIC: Curious to hear what Dan and Paul do with Black Gates.
