Maybe it describes the sh**ty current modern music scene (burning in the background) which people are leaving in droves to find better music, ending up finding Opeth. However, little do the pilgrims know Opeth may look pretty on the surface but they hide the evil seed of death metal buried below... haha, that was just for humor btw.

f*** man, the artist blew what shold have been a decent piece, big time! All the themes and elements are fine, but what the fvck is up with the fruity Georgia Peach tree? That hideous centerpiece ruins the whole work (trunk below the foilage is cool)
the christmas ornament 'Queen' heads just add insult to fatal injury
we'll see how the thing sounds, but I ain't holdin my breath....these dudes are all over the ranch

I love this cover. It is bright and cheery but if you look deeper you see the darkness nestled nice and snuggly with the beauty. What a great concept! I love the idea of beauty in darkness but they've reversed it on me and it has blown my mind! Darkness in Beauty!!!!!

in my opinion this is an awesome piece to be featured on any metal album.
the city on fire in the background represents mainstream/pop music, and the steady flow of people leaving are people discovering better music (such as opeth), hence the lineup of people trying to take something off the tree. the underground throws me off though, maybe the roots have something to do with the complications that come along with being outside of the norm (the big city), and the devils are pointing down the two paths people get to make when it comes to music: awesome and misunderstood, or sh**ty but commonly accepted.
that is what i take from it, but thats why this is such boss artwork, to someone else it might mean something completely different.
also @12 that theory seems like it would be reasonable with the per-esque head falling off, but i count 10 skulls and i can only think of per, lindgren and de farfella?

If you count the original guys from 1990, there are 10 former members (now 11 with Per): Nick Döring Bass, Anders Nordin Drums, David Isberg Vocals, Johan DeFarfalla Bass, Peter Lindgren Guitars, Andreas Dimeo Guitars, Kim Pettersson Guitars, Mattias Ander Bass, Stefan Guteklint Bass, and Martin Lopez Drums.

With previous artwork. I do agree with the post above me it looks like a good joke. It does not seem like "Opeth" artwork, maybe a manowar or a gwar artwork, but not Opeth. Opeth is known for their serious and often atmospheric artwork that is graceful, yet dark. This does not fit the pattern. I believe this is like Iwrestledbear's latest shennanigans, and a huge joke

The only thing that bothers me is the faces in the tree. Concept is great i think. Open too many interpretations, like the new music may possibly be. Could be a joke, given Akerfeldts humor, who knows. The best thing about these guys, besides note for note perfection,is Akerfeldts between song banter! Hilarious! Dudes got the dryest sense of humor ive heard.

I think you guys need to look at the covers of some 70s prog-rock albums. Akerfeldt has repeatedly said and showed on Watershed that's where they're taking their influenced from.
Seriously, go look at covers by Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Jethro Tull, Rush, Queen and you'll see common threads of depictions of people and hand painted artwork.

Agreed with Cynic. Opeth is simply displaying their appreciation for mid 1960s - mid 1970s progressive rock album art. People need to understand that Opeth has many influences (including non-metal). This is part of what makes the band so amazing and unique.
I like the album artwork. I believe Watershed and Ghost Reveries were both works of art and I think this album will be another step forward. Listen to interviews with Åkerfeldt. It's clear he doesn't want to make the same record twice and will continue to push himself to the limits while embracing his influences (I wonder why him and Steven Wilson are best buds...lol). Have faith in Åkerfeldt! He will not let us down.

Akerfeldt actually said a while back that this album might piss alot of people off. He's on one of those moods where he's not really into metal at all right now, or conventional music period, so he's shooting for more prog stuff, in the vein of long song structures and other weird sh**, so to speak.
But then again, who knows what's changed with the man since that interview, it's been a few months. I might still be busy listening to the Devin Townsend double-albums anyway, so I'll be too busy to bother with this for at least a few weeks after release lol.
