Guitarist Brent Hinds Comments On Forthcoming New Album From Mastodon
Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds recently commented on the forthcoming new album from Mastodon and had the following to say about its musical direction;
"'Blood Mountain' and 'Crack the Skye' — those albums took too long to make. This only took us a couple weeks to record and there’s a totally different feeling to it. It's a jump-on-your-bed, get naked, and go streaking kind of record. I haven't had this feeling about a Mastodon record since [2004's] 'Leviathan.' It's just fucking awesome.
"We've got a song about fighting, there's a song about lifting heavy stuff, there's a song about people on meth creeping around in trees trying to get the best wood grain out of a tree to sell it at Lowe's for [drug] money…the album is kind of silly. We're taking the piss out of things. It sounds like Zeppelin with these smooth buttery vocals and a huge Jimmy Page-style guitar solo. Me and Brann [Dailor, drums] play off each other also in this sort of proggy way. There's a lot of stuff for the listener to tweak their ear to"
Song titles set to appear on the album include "Blasteroids," "All the Heavy Lifting," and "The Sparrow." The band are also planning on giving the album the title of "The Hunter" or "Brother" in honor of Brent Hinds' own brother who unexpectedly passed away last December while hunting.

Crack the skye was such an amazing album. Maybe their studio albums should take "too long" to ensure quality. If they did this in two weeks like hey claimed, that makes me wonder if the outcome is rehashed songs.... TAKE YOUR TIME MASTODON PLZ!!! I can wait a year of recording if you are going to make an epic album like the last 3. I do not want anothe remission because that was the weakest in my opinion

Generally albums that don't take long to record is a very good thing. Something tells me you'd be concerned if your dirty cherio started itching in a different place than usual. I fvcking hate it when people assume and judge an album before hearing it for the first time. With the exception of A7X, i'm always willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until I hear it for myself.

Personally Mastodon is one of my favorite bands. Crack the Skye was one of my favorite albums I have ever boughten. I truely think this album will be great. From the concepts of the album title to the song titles, all in all this album is going to be fantastic. Can't wait \m/

^im with avant. Hated mastodons sound until cts. That album is still in heavy rotation and i get bored real easy. Even though i still cant get into their first three, im excited for a silly album following the density of their last one. This should be f***tastic.

I'm not a fan of Mastodon at all, I've always felt very confused with all the hype surrounding them. For me the vocals absolutely ruin the experience. :S They're extremely creative and great musicians whom I do respect but I just can't seem to get into them.
And yes a couple is 2 NH. lmao

lmao yes, but speaking about time, a couple means 2 or more (usually no more than 4).
and i was with u ES on that about the vox, but then, i just kept going back to listening to them and they just rlly grew on me. they're a great band and will be a part of metal for a long time. and everyone seems to be fine with that lol

I never really liked these guys until Crack The Skye, then I gave the other albums a second look and I enjoy them all now... The vocals are what threw me off. I think its just a matter of getting used to it, same thing i went through with Dave Mustaine's vocals

Ya ES, I could never quite get into the ol woolly Mammut either...but can also appreciate their talent. An intriquing band for sure, just waiting for the record that really grabs me...perhaps this will be the one. Machine Head was that way for me until the Blackening...never could really get into em before that record, but that one now stands as one of my all time favorite metal albums
N'head brother, I think you're confusing 'Couple' with 'Few' :)

Was just discussing Mastodon vocals with someone else today. He claims that Troy is a solid vocalist. I said Brent is better and Brent is mediocre at best. Troy sounds like sh!t live. Then he commented that Machine Head were plague metal and I realized our conversation had ended. :-)
