Trivium Address New Tags Placed On Them

Band Photo: Trivium (?)
Trivium frontman Matt Heafy spoke with Australia's Time Off magazine about being tagged as nothing more than revivalists at best, and plagiarists at worst. "We've always felt that we've done whatever we want," Heafy explained. "We never came up with a bunch of bands, we never came up with a movement, we're not really in a clique of bands. Five years ago people were saying New Wave Of American Heavy Metal, and then a few years ago it was some other bullsh** term. We always just say we're a band that makes music. We're just Trivium."

no you are not...you are making other people's music. and you were trivium, now you shall be known as Motlytallicexodament. that is a cool name right??? and it pretty much sums up your sound. give me a break heafy and stop trying to sound like hetfield will you. it is one thing that you used to talk about how much the band is influenced by classic metallica, it is a totally different thing when you blatently rip off their sound. this is not a knock on trivium fans either, so no one needs to tell me how much of an idiot i am b/c i really believe this is a talented band. i just wish that they would use their talents for something more than a tribute album that is gonna make them a bunch of euro's when they go over seas.

^couldn't of said it better. I have seen this band live (pretty good live band) and heard their albums. They have the talent, but they need to stop sleeping with their Metallica box set. There last album was such a let down that I lost a lot of respect for them.

Talented in every sense....Gifted, if you factor in for below the legal drinking age.....Trivium are a better gateway act than A7X, Limp Bizkit, Poison etc...
BUT...Heafy needs to fix his lyrics, quickly....How he sings "To the Rats" with a straight face every night baffles the sh** out of me...It's going to take alot of alcohal damage to the esophagus for Heafy to sound like '87 Hetfield.
The Darkness were as bad as a cancer diagnosis.

They may be a better gateway act than Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, but they still pale in comparison to... how to say, less extreme acts like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Iron Maiden etc.
That's probably what's so warped about todays scene. The extreme scene is healthy as, a new brutal Black/Death band comes out every day. The part that's lacking is that there are few new non-extreme bands coming out today that hold the flag of metal high. Just because it's 2007 doesn't mean it's any harder to write thrash metal. I think the main point is that most bands today have a massive coalescence of influences that are more extreme than thrash's influences (Thin Lizzy, Venom, Sabbath etc). Take Thrash, Black, Death and mash them together, bam you've got Childrem of Bodom.

Well said. It's true though. There's so many extreme bands around. But to be honest we all like a bit of music that isn't angry all the time and whatever. Just look at boys like Ted Nugent and the like that can maintain the attitude but feel more fun. If you know what I mean.

What it boils down to is that this generation...whatever the generation after Generation Y is called....Has more going against them than mine....
As Cynic noted Megadeth, Metallica and Pantera were excellent starter acts.....I was 6-12 when they came along (add Slayer and Tool to those and you have the rough foundation of my current taste).
Trivium is the closest young band to what I grew up on....I think the kids and teenagers hearing Trivium will be on a faster track than kids who had to start with Nirvana, Bon Jovi, HIM or Korn.

Luckily i was raised on GnR Bon Jovi and a few others, so by the time Korn emerged i had alkready aquired a decent taste in old skool metal.. Korn were different and better than bloody nirvana... but even so, all the nu metal sounded the same after a few albums.. the only decent band to come out of the so called nu metal scene was Machine Head. and they were more thrash than nu. but got lumped in with korn, coal chamber et al..
oh and the darkness suck more than all the male pop idol contestants ever. They are a national embarressment.

i didnt like the crusade too much at 1st, but after a couple listens i really started to like it more. i really dont see how you can say trivium rips off 80s thrash. do they play thrash style music? yes. do they take old metallica riffs and put them into their songs? no. just cause a new band comes out and tries to refresh an old genre doent mean they are blatant rip-offs. ill agree with the fact that the lyrics are ridiculous at times, and heafy may be an ass(ive heard this from people who didnt hate the band), but ill stick with my thoughts that the band is talented and are bringing good music back to the mainstream, and not just the mainstream but anyone can enjoy some of the new songs if they have the open-mindedness to give it a try.
also i will agree with the general consensus that the darkness was pure gayness.

I will agree that their new album is not my favorite of the three they have released. I personally was very p***ed off that matt changed his singing style to sound more like metallica if that is what people want to say. Yes the lyrics on "to the rats" are pretty gay and yes the anthem is pretty gay as well especially where he chants just like james H. from Metallica. But I still think they are pretty talented and that they will still continue to have a lot of success in the years to come. Some of their riffs and solos are sick.
also yes when i saw them live i got a vibe that they were a$$holes though, but they make good music for the most part.

I think Trivium have some real potential if they carry on the current course, it's all about finding the inner originality. The talent's there, that's for sure. Hetfield is legendary because his voice was unique in the Thrash scene. Combined with the purest, from heart lyrics you can find ("Exploiting their supremecy/I can't believe the things you say/I can't believe/I can't believe the price you pay") there was a magic about Metallica. Hopefully Trivium will grace us with some magic in a matter of years rather than a matter of albums.

The roughly equal amounts of praise and hate Trivium are generating should be all the band needs to either better themselves or sellout and assure a comfortable retirement.
Any band that has studied a genre like thrash this closely is deserving of at least a little respect.
Trivium are -very- young and theres all kinds of time to carve out a more unique identity. I'm starting to echo myself but I think alot of kids are discovering alot of great bands just by reading interviews where Trivium drop Metallicas, Slayers Testaments and Megadeths names with regularity.
Some kid says "Megadeth who?" picks up a copy of "Peace Sells" and the rest is history.

Honestly, trivium are so young and everyone is ripping on them just because there successful. Dead set i think some of you people hate it how bands become big that used to be underground metal acts.. Trivium are the most talented band out there at the moment and there best years are still ahead of them, and if i had the talented they had i would be doin it too. There solos f***in kill hammets solos, he sings twice as good as hetfield and they know what they want and have there heads screwed on. Use all say there ripping off metallicas music, tell me which song or riff actually sounds anything like metallica? Ill say it now that they have more talent then what metallica did at this age. You people are f***in lame there makin a name for themselves on the big scene and use cant stand it cause there gettin more recognition from the world cause they are evolving into a massive force. Theyv got the talent and theyv only just started to flex there muscles, no matter how much you love or hate them nobody can deny they have the ride of there lives ahead of them. Until all your bands start touring with the likes of maiden and metallica at there age and selling out shows everywhere use play, stop havin a cry about them cause its pathetic. They have gotten huge in the past year and all of you know they have, deal with it there here to stay and there reinventing a truely inspiring style and reminding the younger and older generation what thrash is all about and not all these screaming emos wearing there fa**ot a$$ eyeliner and off there face on drugs f***in pathetic what some people emulate too. They have gotten bigger and bigger with each year and use dont like that cause you know its not gunna stop. Its change and evolution, and there giving the heavy metal/thrash metal scene alot of attention and thats something its been lacking for a very long time

Its personal choice really, every band that works hard to get where they are deserves respect in my opinion. Roadrunner know the talent in these kids, it shows the confidence they had in them when they signed them after ember when matt had only just turned 18. Its a great achievement for what theyv done in such a short period of time already, they deserve every bit of recognition they get. Cheers metal mates

"There solos f***in kill hammets solos, he sings twice as good as hetfield "... yeah I stopped reading after that sorry. Phh, I couldn't care if they were as big as Britney, in fact I wish my favourite bands were that big so people could enjoy their virtuousity.
I'll admit I haven't listened to the whole new album, I had alot of half downloaded songs of which I deleted but I remember the start of Unrepentant sounded alot like Through the Never. There were other things I heard as well, its easy to pick up when you've learn half Metallica's catalog.

Yeah and that same band turned into one of the most recognised metal bands of all time. Is it wrong to have influences or something? I mean oz your sayin it as if its against the law to emulate the bands they were inspired by and looked up to as kids, is it? They have the same style as metallica thats obvious, but this is fresh and something that metallica stopped doing after the justice album. Iv spoke to matt about his new vocal style and he simply said he wants to be able to do this for a long time and not lose his voice by the age of 40. Look at corey taylor, hes voice is f***ed now from the abuse he gave it. In my opinion he's singing has changed for the better. Ember to inferno ascendency and the crusade are unique in there own way, each has a refreshed and reworked style. If you had a band would you be inspired to play the same type music that you listen too? Would you play the style that influences you? Its pretty rare to find a musician that wouldnt.. Honestly. Theres so many bands that do it now, and cause trivium are enjoying so much success people are labelling them. If the crusade didnt do so well nobody would have even cared, but it is doing very well and the fact is they have doubled there fan base in the past year and there not showing any signs of slowing down.
