Ozzy Osbourne Promises A Classic, Zakk Wylde Disses Metallica

Photo of Ozzy Osbourne

Band Photo: Ozzy Osbourne (?)

Ozzy Osbourne and his guitarist Zakk Wylde spoke with Revolver magazine about Ozzy's new album, which the Black Sabbath frontman promises is "in the same league as 'No More Tears', 'Blizzard of Ozz', and 'Diary'." Meanwhile, Wylde took a stab at Metallica for working with Bob Rock. "We just went in and jammed out the riffs, just like how they made 'Back in Black' and all the Sabbath record," said Wylde. "I don't need Bob Rock there to tell me what to do, like that 'Vagina Monologues' band Metallica. When you know where you're going, you don't need to ask for fu**ing directions! It sounds like classic Ozzy — there's piano ballads, there's an acoustic thing, and then there's the heavy sh**. From the beginning, Oz kept saying to me, 'Zakk, we need another 'No More Tears' — we've gotta piss all over that fu**in' record. This thing's gotta be able to hang with 'Diary of a Madman'!'"

Exzoomer-no disrespect but the 'art' excuse is lame. If an artist expend time, money and resources to bring you product (art) you should respect them enough to pay for it. Do you do whatever you do for free? If its just about art the why did Shawn Fanning SELL the Napster brand and get rich? Why did he go on a character assassination campaign against Metallica? All they asked him to do was take down their UNFINISHED version of 'I Disappear' that wasn't even mixed. He didn't do anything for free so why should Metallica? Artist should be paid for the expense of the art they create for their audience. NONE of the process is free for them-if you want to enjoy their product, its not free for you.

I was a hardcore Metallica fan for a lot of years, and I still have the hope they'll return to what made them-quick, technically proficient metal, not the whiny, Post-Black stuff;and definitely not the badly-produced unfinished demos that was St. Anger. As for Zakk, I'm a proud member of the Berzerker Chapter. BLS is straightforward guitar rock, which is what he's good at and known for. He's at least not selling his soul to the record companies or compromising when someone like Bob Rock says it would be better if he played more simply, which is exactly what happened to Metallica. I completely blame Bob Rock for their downward slide, and hope they kick him to the curb for good.

As usual most of the comment's are filled with hate and bullshyt! Zakk Wylde is gonna say whatever he chooses! He always has. Just the way he plays alone gives him a lil shyt talking room, even if it's The Mighty Metallica!! pay attention here people his comment was directed to them but his beef was with Bob Rock. He obviously has no respect for the mans work, and he doesn't have to. However he's using Bob Rock to shyt on a band even he was influenced by. Remember, Zakk himself was only about 15 when master of puppets came out. Also, he obviously doesn't care for his Black label/Ozzy band mate now a member of metallica Rob Trujillo. I like many of you would think these two would be friends still maybe not. I love both Zakk and Metallica alike. This hatred for metallica is stupid and not needed. From zakk or anyone else. Theres nothing metallica has done good or bad to not get the respect they deserve. So f***ing what, you've hated them since the black album....It was Bob Rock who gave that album the world class production those songs deserved. Also. Zakk metallica also just jammed and wrote St anger in the same manner this new Ozzy album was....Is anyone paying attention!! I'm not ever expecting another, Master of Puppets or No more tears, but It's the respect I have for the previous work that will allow me to buy anything new. Zakk just proves that he plays like a mother f***er, and can be a mother f***er to!! Looking forward to both records....hey Zakk, does Rick Rubin suck to? Ozzy is putting out another album because Sharon won't let him retire. As for Bob Rock being a world class producer just because the albums sound ver clean means nothing. I'm all for taking chances and using other influences to develop what you play, but not if it comes to comprimising your integrity. Bob convinced them they didn't need to play 10 minute epics when they were recording the Black album, and it became a commercial success. Radio and MTV played the crap out of that album. Everything since then has gotten play when it comes out, but it doesn't hold up. I hear far more of the Pre-Black Metallica on the radio than all the albums Rock produced combined. I stand behind what I say whin I say the "5th member"(Bob Rock) has done far more to hurt Metallica than help them.

I think Hetfield told him he quick and Zack proceeded to take a swig and spit beer in the air-getting it everywhere and thinking he was being funny. Hetfield got up and walked off the bus and the press (Blabbermouth?) reported that Zack had spit beer on Hetfield. He went out of his way to explain what happened and expressed his reverence for Hetfield then. I think his comments may be motivated by knowing he acted like a jackass then...I'll see if I can find a link but I 98% sure that was the story...and no, kids, spitting beer on someone who trying to quit drinking-no matter how much you hate their music, is not ok.

I have never posted a comment to any message board. I'm a little reluctant cuz I'm not very thick skinned and some of the slams are brutal. But, here goes. Risking ridicule. From the sounds of a lot of the messages I'm probably old enough to be a parent to a lot of you, so my perspective is naturally gonna be from a slightly differrent angle. I was weaned on Rock giants from back in the day . . .Led Zepplin, AC/DC, The Doors, and the likes. I have been a Metallica fan since the mid-80s. Probably one of the die hard fans that receive so much abuse. My husband who is a few years younger than I am actually introduced me to their music I respect pretty much all musical talent even when it is painful to hear as in the recent Metallica years. I couldn't stand Metallica when I first heard them. Ugggg. Don't know what changed except I found myself mezmerized. Odd how that happens I guess . I don't remember ever having to compare them to any other bands. They were simply METALLICA. Like most everyone else who bought St. Anger out of a mixture of curiosity, hope and loyalty I was extremely disappointed. Having said that, I will continue to buy (waste as some may believe) my hard earned cash on upcoming albums, concerts whatever for the same reasons. I don't feel that anyone should have to defend their musical tastes to anyone! I have taken Metallica's music with me through a crazy life and even if they never put out anything even remotely powerful as their old works, it doesn't change their talent. I am an administrative professional at a "conservative" regional university and no one would ever believe I was such a fan of "satan's" music! I have loved Ozzy. I've shaked my head at his craziness, strained to catch an audible word and loved his talent. What a powerful voice! My husband is a huge fan of BLS. I am pretty new to Mr. Wylde's music, but like the sound and love hearing some Ozzy reflected in his guitar. My husband gave up on Metallica about the time Load came out. I don't really know Slayer's work, but what the heck I'll try it out! I guess my point after all of this rambling is, let it be. Let Zakk be Zakk, Ozzy be Ozzy and Metallica be whoever they are as well. While the planet feels a little constricted with all of the super-inflated ego crap surely the world is big enough to allow for all of that incredible talent? It's amazing how f***** up your life can get. Like John Lennon said, "Life is what happens when you're making other plans" or something like that. I would hate to think that those I felt were the most loyal to me would have abandoned me when I stumbled and fell. More than once. Hopefully, those artists seeming to jump on the let's mash someone under the heels of our current success bands like Slayer and BLS will themselves have successful and enduring careers. More hopefully, there will be enough class and respect out there that they won't be on the receiving end of those who feel the need to stand in judgment. Thanks for the opportunity to voice. I'm sure there is much to critique in this ramble, but Rock On World!

Didn't Ozzy have an MTV reality show? And some of you are giving Metallica crap for selling out. Plus, Zakk is just trying to be a reincarnated Randy Rhodes, and it's something he'll never live up to... No More Tears was okay, but everything else Zakk has touched SUCKS!!!! I mean has he ever listened to Kill 'em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, And Justice... I mean come on now, it doesn't get much better than those. Like my name suggests: f*** ZAKK!!!!

you will NEVER have the musical impact of metallica! how many people bought your last record?
now how many people go out and buy metallica records every day?
if you would actually put out an original record that's not just a bunch of watered down eighties metal with pinch harmonics every other note, maybe you would have some sort of musical impact yourself.
face it dude, if you didn't play for ozzy, bls would never have even seen the light of day!
there's a million f***ing guitarists out there that can put on leather and spikes, and play just as fast as you!

Hello friends! Hope you're staying warm out there. I think I'll listen to Master of Puppets for pure pleasure this evening while the blender is whirling and also try the latest BLS out of curiosity. I purchased it for the man on its release date and he's been kinda lukewarm about it. He's a pretty hardcore BLS fan. Maybe this was not their most shining moment? Or maybe it's just got different temp and feel than than others? Don't know. I've mentioned before that I'm new to ZW's music . . . outside of Ozzy that is. I'll give it a try and decide for myself. The mention of Randy Rhodes in an earlier post made me smile. Sometimes I forget to go back and listen to what really good music they made! I have an RR tribute album that is amazing. Feels like Friday already! Cheers!

Hello Kimi, its nice to see a pleasant outlook on things..
Its a strange coincidence that I was just listening to MOP last night...what a great album.. I got to see them on that particular tour...only a matter of weeks before Cliff's untimely death...!!!

As far as the BLS material, the new one is decent, but I will always feel that "The Blessed Hellride" is their best so far...

Dont we all smile at thoughts of Randy Rhodes..??. That was such a tragic loss.., as a teenage guitarist at that time...it struck quite a heavy blow....!!!

Morning all! To godlike. . .doesn't it make you wonder where things would have ended up had some of the greats not been untimely forced from the planet? Maybe you're still doin' your own music though? I do like the Blessed Hellride. Quite a lot, actually. I think it's an awesome coincidence about the MOP album! I like to think there's this cosmic thing out there where folks we will likely never meet can still share private moments with us. I know, I'm weird! When I was reading your comments, Pantellica, it reminded me how hard it is for me to separate out my personal beliefs from the artists whom I connect with. It's one thing to have a value or belief and another to stand and defend it. Here's a dumb thing that popped into my head. What was up with The Super Nova Reality show? That is probably opening up one stanky can of worms, but Jason, please! What a talent gone awry. Except for the Cliff 'Em All days, that is METALLICA for me! I didn't ever get into the political/social/angst crap so I never knew that trouble was a brewin' until he was no longer playing for the team. Anyway, Have a great weekend, stay safe, wam and enjoy!

So, I will not try and list them all here, because someone out there will flip me $hit for not bringing up so and so... And that would just ruin a nice conversation..

Hey godlike. Glad to hear from you before the weekend. I have a really good friend that listens to all kinds of bands I've never heard of. I'll ask him. Don't think the husband has, but don't know what kinda music goes on in his shop when I'm not around. Guy Stuff! I'll ask. I was thinking of the power voices that have wowed me over the years, like Ozzy, Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford. I think that's what appeals to me about ZW is he has that potential when he's not just growling out the lyrics. Of course some would say that's soooo 80's, but . . . On the topic of Zep. . .there was this underground (at least in these parts) radio program years ago called "Monster's of Metal" that would play all kinds of kicking rock. I don't recall which song it was, but Jason Bonham played drums "what else" on a couple of songs. Nice. There's probably lots more to the story, but that's what I remember. This is really nostalgic talk. Feels good. Not that many people around in my life to share with, so thanks for the memories my friend!

Actually, Jason Bonham, while playing with members of Zeppelin a few times over the years, has also released alot of material of his own....his first was when he was only about 16...a band named Airrace... then in the late 80s early 90s there were several Bonham releases..and then there was the CD..In the Name of My Father- the Zep Set...all of which are quite good.. The apple did not fall far from the tree in that family.. He is quite an amazing drummer... he plays with the same passion and energy that his father played with..!! Seems at this point in time, he is playing with a few formed version of Foriegner, that has ex Hurricane singer Kelly Hanson on vocals...

81. Frost Bite Phil Stricklin writes:

Im getting really sick and tired of all this non-sense really. Unfortunately it will be hard to maintain an un-biased outlook on this particular subject, or at least the image of un-biased. But I'll try my best.

I want to say first of all, I thought Shot To Hell was the best album of 2006 followed very closely to Trivium's "The Crusade".

What I've found in my years as a musician, Is that there are ultimately two kinds of fans. Theres fans of music, and what i call "Genre fans". Music fans are simply how its put. Fans of any kind of music, they will give anything a chance, and generally give everything a very even outlook and opinion. They arent very closed off, unless its revisiting something they know from previous expirience they don't like. The Genre fans are fans of one particular genre. What I hate about what rock has become, is as a genre itself, Rock, has spawned a million sub-genres itself. It used to be all rock and roll. When Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath first started, I dont think they directly called their music anything but Hard Rock. What I have found in Metal is most people are genre fans.

Ill be the first to admit it, I have grown to love St Anger. The key word in that sentence is grown. When i first heard St. Anger and Frantic, I honestly didnt even notice a lack of solo's, as i dont use the presence of solos as a basis to my opinion. When I bought St. Anger I popped it in searching for the signature "soft" song, which is usually track number four (Fade to black, Sanatarium, One, Unforgiven, Until It Sleeps, Unforgiven II, and even on Garage inc, Turn the Page which was the lighter end of that cover album) only to find that it was non existent, I was turned off a little bit... and listening to it all the way through, was really stretching to sit through "All Within my hands" and "Purify". Its not an album you hear once and its automatic: you love it. Its not Master, Ride, And Justice, the black album, Its something you really have to sit through maybe twice, listen to the lyrics, find the meanings behind the songs.... and through this process, anyone who appreciates a decently crafted song really cant deny the fact that there was more effort put to the lyrics end of this album, than the instrumental end. And I ask you: Why is that a bad thing? I mean Zakk Wylde can play around with playing different instruments all together on "Shot To Hell", so why cant Metallica stretch their already long Lyrical legs?

Im not gonna make this a debate about which is better. Opinions are all realative, there is no right or wrong that transcends to anyone but yourself. Sure there are clicks and niches of people with the same opinion, And i ask you how rock and rolll is that really to gang up as a majority to beat up on the underdog? Not very, Rock and roll is about just expressing whatever you want to. No judgments, just opinions.

Ive found that the very people that are the first to bash Metallica for Napster, Lars, or any other reason are also the last people to make an attempt to hear both sides of the story. Which pretty much for me makes your opinion about anything worthless. I do beleive that alot of hatred from the likes of Slayer, Zakk Wylde, and whoever you want to throw in comes from the root that, Metallica was the first Metal band to really blow rock away. Really I dont think theres been another band to compare to what Metallica did for metal honestly. Pantera was always the fall back for the Metallica fans who thought they sold out, in which case that would mean Pantera wasn't as popular, Wasnt playing as big of venus and such. Black Label Society played the second stage this year at ozzfest, and played the smalled venu in Maricopa County (for arizona) that he could have played in.. which wasnt as packed as Trivium was the month before. The only band that can truly say they are peers success wise is Black Sabbath, and through association maybe Ozzy Osbourne. I believe full heartedly in the quote "Black Sabbath created metal, Metallica pefected it".

82. Frost Bite Phil Stricklin continued writes:

As I mentioned before, most metal fans are genre fans, they dont stride outside of that genre they stay in it for whatever reasons. It is because Metallicas no fearing ways of going bluesy sounding for Load and reload, playing with a symphony live, or making a record that sounded like they were a garage band, that Metal fans are scared of. Because Metallica has metal in the core of their name, they almost feel betrayed by the fact that they stray outward from time to time. They fail to remember that when opening for the stones they performed "Orion" live for the first time since Ciff's untimely death. They fail to remember that all the shows they played in 2006 consisted of the enitre setlist from Master Of Puppets, one of the four albums these "old school" fans claim to love. It ultimately boils down to a selfishness. Metallica appeals to the likes of anyone in Rock and roll music. Metallica accopmlishes the point of Rock and Roll music by not having any barriers, by not being genrified like so many other bands allow, or embrace. Metal fans are so intent on being the rebel that the idea that alot of people liking what they like is frighting. Not realizing that in an in advertant way they are giving the majority the power anyway.

Someone brought up a very good point, Zakk Wyldes manager is Ozzy. If theres anymore of a hypocrite, I've never heard from him/her. Bob Rock's intentions when managing Metallica was not to commercialize them, his intentons were to open up the doors to a whole world of rock that Metallica could claim and remold to their likings. His goal was to have Metallica reach their maximum potential possible. So much so that it in fact backfired with St Anger. Thus the mutual desicion to find a producer that will not eat up Metallica self proclaimed bullsh**. Rick Rubin willl simply say "Its good or it's sh**ty, fix it." Which is exactly what Ozzy tells Zakk Wylde. Has anyone really thought about why Black Label Society isnt as huge as Ozzy Osbourne? Its because when Zakk is in BLS mode, he doesnt have Ozzy Directing him. I mean Come on theres no shame in that really, youre taking orders from Ozzy. A rock and rolll hall of famer. There was an article before christmas about Zakk admitting that very same thing!

It boils down to my overall point, which was the main intention of this entire post. You hear members from Slayer slam Metallica, You hear Zakk Slam Metallica, when have you ever once heard James, Kirk, Lars, Rob, or even Jason when he was attatched slam another musician? Do you want to know why that is? Its because Metallica is infact a band of musicians, who have heard of musicians courtesey, musicians professionalism, and overall simple respect. You think that Metallica doesnt know what Zakk Wylde has said? We havent seen anything come back from their side of it have we? The incident with Zakk and James was only commented on Zakk's behalf, not James. You know damn well if a member of Metallica said anything insulting about Zakk Wylde or members from Slayer that there would then be a huge fight started. However thats not any matter at all because Metallica has class.

Frost Bite Phil Stricklin just owned all the whiners this thread. Everyone and their uncle just loves to rag on Metalllica, but you know what? They just celebrated the 20 year anniversary of Master Of Puppets and look how well that record endured. I think Zakk's a hilarious dude and a decent guitar player, but I doubt anyone's going to be caring about a BLS record 20 years down the line. Metallica paved the way for a lot of newer bands that people seem to worship, and these bands acknowledge the debt. They started off hungry, and they paid their dues by non-stop touring to promote their earlier albums (with hardly any radio play and no videos until their 4th album). Their live show took a drop during the Load/Reload period but have any of you actually seen them recently? I went to the Cow Palace show and HP Pavilion shows on the St. Anger tour about two years ago, and they were crushing. Metallica doesn't have to bother responding to these petty rants and endless b****ing and moaning because they have nothing to prove.

Anyway, as I have stated in other threads Metallica is my favourite band. However that doesn't mean that if they release sh** music I'll praise them for it. If they do, they deserve criticism of that music. Yes, we know MOP and RTL ruled. We know they rule live. 2 massive posts from Frost Bite Phil Stricklin and I don't really feel anything was said.
