Orchid Reveals New Album Details

San Francisco based doom rockers Orchid have set April 26th, 2013 as the release date for the band's new album, "The Mouths Of Madness." The cover artwork was created by singer & tattoo artist Theo Mindell and can be found below. Mindell comments on the cover:

"I wanted the cover of the album to be really classic and strong, like one of the records from my childhood where when you'd see the colors and shapes on it from across the room, you'd immediately recognize it. A classic 'icon'... so it's very simple really. But then I did a really elaborate painting for the inside that is totally ornate... I wanted people to open this kind of sparse, plain thing and be drawn into another world that kind of visually told the story of some of the emotions of the record. Kind of like peeling a weird fruit open... the inner painting was really inspired by some of the Latino psychedelic murals that were done around San Francisco in the late 60's-early 70's....like the cover of Abraxsis by Santana which is a record I grew up on and always loved. So, it's the 'Orchid version' of those murals."

Guitarist Mark Thomas Baker comments on the extensive production process: "Most of the tracks on 'Mouths of Madness' were cut in early June 2012. We were pretty fresh off of our European tour and full of confidence. The basics done at that time were the best recording experience that we've had so far. Everybody got along great and did great work. We did this album with a completely different guitar sound than 'Capricorn.' I think it sounds much heavier in that regard. We take a lot of time to get things right. I hope people enjoy it and let it sink in. I think it's miles above our past efforts." More...

Witchcraft Announces Tour With Orchid

Attention heavy rockers, doomheads, retro aficionados, hippies, or simply lovers of timeless rock music: rejoice! Two absolute giants of 70's riff worshipping sound will embark on a tour together in April and May of 2013 – Witchcraft and Orchid. A listing of tour dates are available below, and Nuclear Blat Records also comments on the bands:

"Swedes Witchcraft were one of the first bands who started to recreate the sound of old heroes like Pentagram around 2000 and who only had one goal in mind: to revive the 70s sound with landmark releases such as 'Firewood.' They returned with 'Legend' in 2012 and proved their status as leaders of a whole subgenre once more!

"Orchid from San Francisco are more of a recent phenomenon: the four piece made quite a bunch of heads turn with their debut EP 'Through the Devil's Doorway' in 2009 before they firmly established themselves as the rightful heirs to Black Sabbath's throne with their album 'Capricorn' in 2011. Their second full-length release will be upon us early 2013."

Orchid To Release New EP

Orchid, which signed to Nuclear Blast earlier this month, will be releasing a brand new EP featuring three new tracks plus one song from the latest full-length album, "Capricorn." The EP is set for release on September 7th, 2012.

The EP, entitled "Heretic," marks the first release for Nuclear Blast and will be released both digitally as well as on 10" Vinyl. The track listing is:

01. Heretic
02. Falling Away
03. Saviours Of The Blind
04. He Who Walks Alone

Commented guitarist Mark Baker: "Late in 2010, after we submitted the Capricorn full length to our label and waited for the release, we realized that there wouldn’t be any extensive touring, so we just kept writing and rehearsing new material. A few months later, we were back in the studio cutting basics for new songs. By the time we finished the business of changing labels, we had way more than one album worth of new songs. We, along with Nuclear Blast, decided it would be a great idea to release a few of those on an EP this year while we wrap up everything for our next full length. We’re really excited for people worldwide to get a chance to check out what we’ve been up to in the last year. These new songs have the classic, anthemic Orchid sound that people expect from us, along with a few elements that we’ve never shown before." More...

Orchid Signs With Nuclear Blast

Nuclear Blast is extremely proud to announce the worldwide signing of San Francisco's Orchid. Commented the band:

"After many months of talking to different labels about our future, we’re very excited to announce that we've decided to join forces with Nuclear Blast. We’ve been working on new material on and off for the last year and we’re feeling really good about the new songs. It seems like they're a continuation in the same tradition of the material on our first full length, 'Capricorn,' but also, show some new sides of our music that should surprise everyone and show that Orchid isn't a band that just wants to keep making the same album over and over. We're really excited for everyone to hear it!“

Commented Nuclear Blast head of A&R, Andy Siry: "Ever since we first heard of Orchid and witnessed their perfect way of bringing back the glorious days of rock music, we knew we had to work with this amazing band. After meeting them on their most recent European tour we literally were blown away by their stunningly intense performance! So here we are, proud as f*ck, welcoming one of the most hopefully and authentic bands to the Nuclear Blast family. Every single one at the label loves ORCHID and so will you! CHECK THEM OUT!"

Nuclear Blast also issued the following history of the band: More...

Unearthing The Metal Underground in the Bay Area

Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. This week I am spreading the word from the San Francisco Bay Area metal scene.

The Bay Area's metal legacy began with the '80s thrash scene, which gave birth to Metallica, Exodus, Testament, and Death Angel. Neurosis entered the scene with their experimental metal, and Primus and Faith No More turned heads in what could only be referred to as alternative metal. Starting in the '90s, Machine Head evolved the thrash sound into groove metal. Currently, Ludicra, whose black metal has been in the scene since the late '90s, is generating a lot of excitement about their soon to release album, "The Tenant." Today, the Bay Area houses up and coming metal bands who not only reflect the heritage of the region, but filter in influences from a variety of genres. More...
