70k Tons of Metal 2026: A Survivor's Account

This year’s 70,000 Tons of Metal was definitely one for the record books to its loyal faithful, aka "survivors". For the first timers, it was definitely an experience they won’t soon forget.

For those that are new to Metalunderground.com, or by chance stumbled upon this article haphazardly, this incredible music festival takes place every year in February on a full-size passenger cruise ship with 60 bands representing just about every genre in the heavy metal universe.

Survivors

The constant vibe among “survivors” onboard 70k of Metal!

The festival takes place over five days and the ship has always sailed to a sun-drenched location in the Caribbean such as Mexico, The Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. This year’s port was Nassau, Bahamas. This is the 14th rendition of the festival and besides a few obscure incidents, this festival has gone off with nary a hiccup…until now.

Let me preface this by stating that it is 100% fact that 70,000 Tons of Metal cannot control the weather. Andy Piller, the founder and skipper of the festival, is not Zeus. Now that we are clear on this, if you ask the “survivors” what they remember most from this year’s festival, I’m betting most of them will say, it was cold and it was windy.

Even though the weather did indeed suck, the one thing that I can say coming from someone that is a 7 time “survivor,” is that this was the most memorable and the most thrilling time that I’ve ever experienced during all of my 70k of Metal experiences. I loved spending time in Nassau, I loved the bands that played this year and most importantly, I loved that all of us “survivors” were having a blast and soaking up (literally) this year’s wild ride!

Without further ado, I’ll summarize this year’s edition of 70,000 Tons of Metal as best as I am able to.

What stood out most at this year’s festival were the bands that performed. Anthrax was the biggest name on the roster and they just killed it at both of their sets. Their second set on the Pool Stage saw Joey Vera from Armored Saint taking over bass duties from Frank Bello while Frank was accepting a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance honoring the late Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne. I have to hand it to Joey Vera though, he was a natural fit with one of thrash metal’s Big Four giants.

Another band I really enjoyed was Kanonenfieber, a German blackened death metal band that garb up in German World War I costumes. It was my first time seeing them live and I was wowed by their stage performance, it definitely had a theatrical feel to it.

Kanonenfieber

Some of my other favorite sets were from Heathen, Satan, Wolf, Groza, Trash Panda, Vader, Hirax and the much-anticipated reformation and return of the Dutch death metal legends, Izegrim.

ProgPower USA XIV: Saturday Crazies

Carrying the energy over from ProgPower XIV’s Friday show to Saturday’s show was like a Herculean trial for me, running on a combined total of 6 hours sleep from the last two days. In the quiet of dawn, nobody from ProgPower: Hardcore, the unofficial fitness group, was awake enough to run or work out, but not for lack of effort -- They had put in a good run and hot yoga session earlier in the week. (Only at ProgPower, folks.) Fortunately, each of the seven bands on the second day’s roster brought its game face and gave me and the other concert-goers what we needed to raise our bodies, put our hands in the air, bang our heads, jump (if you really enjoyed Sabaton), and fall in love all over again.

After descending upon Einstein Bagel Co at the end of Peachtree St for breakfast with my group of fellow black-shirted friends, which brought a few funny reactions from the locals, we headed down to The Loft next to Center Stage to see Wolverine’s exclusive all-acoustic set for Gold Badge holders and sponsors only. Having rehearsed well in advance, Wolverine was a well-oiled machine, although the same could not be said for the guitar cables that seemed to be shorting out on them by the dozen. Nevertheless, the show was to be unforgettable. Drawing heavily from “Communication Lost,” perhaps the easiest Wolverine album to translate to an acoustic setting, the show took the form of a sort of “Storytellers” gig.

The typical routine they followed went something like this: Vocalist Stefan Zell or bassist Thomas Jansson would give a background and context to a song, they would play it through, Jansson or keyboardist Per Henriksson would take a passionate but subdued solo, Zell would light up the air with his voice, and the crowd would weep. It’s true -- one attendee brought a box of tissues with her, which the band autographed after the performance, for members of the audience that couldn’t help but resonate with the song. The whole performance gave the impression of a slow burn -- warm and electrifying. A special set, indeed. More...

It can be a daunting festival, price- and endurance-wise, but it’s one that should be considered if the genres it derives its name from at all turn your head. Here’s what you can expect from this year’s celebration of the fast and the nerdy down at Center Stage in Atlanta, Georgia, starting on September 4th. More...

Wolf Posts New Music Video Online

Swedish heavy metal outfit Wolf has posted a new music video online for the song, "Skull Crusher." You can check it out below. The video was filmed in Dublin, Republic Of Ireland and the song comes from the group's latest studio album, "Legion Of Bastards."

Niklas Stålvind (vocals and guitars) comments: "We have never had so much fun making a video as we had on this one. Smashing a car into smithereens is something we always wanted to do without cleaning up after us or get in trouble with the police. It was the best exercise/therapy you could ever wish for. I felt like I was 10 kilos lighter in both body and spirit afterwards. We had to work hard to demolish it good. A Volvo is made in Sweden and hard to tear apart - just like this Heavy Metal band. This one is for all the skull crushing metal heads out there - We salute you!" More...
