Chthonic Discusses New Album

Taiwan is a country where history and folklore work very much hand in hand, and both of these elements are central to the latest studio album from that country’s premier metal outfit, Chthonic (pronounced "Thonic"). Mirror of Retribution will be released August 10 on Spinefarm Records UK.

Chthonic (a name deriving from a Greek word signifying spirits of the underworld) has delivered an 11-track body of work that touches on both the spirit and mortal worlds, with loss of national identity and the sometimes turbulent history of their homeland recurring themes.

With Anthrax guitarist Rob Caggiano at the production and mixing helm, "Mirror Of Retribution" sees the award-winning musicians further developing a style that started with the 1999 album "Where The Ancestors' Souls Gathered," blending full-on metal of the darker persuasion with traditional Taiwanese instruments such as two-string violin, the hena.

“The story behind this album combines true historical fact with an ancient myth of hell,” explains bassist and band spokesperson Doris Yeh. “Amongst other things, we make reference to the famous ‘228 Massacre’, which was the biggest ever massacre in Taiwanese history. Tens of thousands of Taiwanese were killed by the Chinese army. The final battle of the event occurred in the middle of Taiwan, where 40 local militia attempted to resist 2,500 soldiers from the Chinese army. In the end, the militia lost their lives near the Sing-Ling Temple.

“Musically, we tried to move the band to a whole new level,” continues Doris. “In the past, we’ve been described in various ways, as ‘symphonic black metal’ or ‘melodic death,’ the word ‘folk’ has also been applied at times, but this was our chance to establish a new place for ourselves in the extreme metal genre…”

Never ones to shy away from a just cause, Chthonic – in particular frontman Freddy Lim – has been consistently active on the political front at home, whilst away from their hometown of Taipei they have appeared at the Wacken Festival in Germany and toured as part of the Ozzfest in the US, the first Asian extreme metal band to make such a mark.

Chthonic Completes New Album

The Asian symphonic black metal band ChthoniC, who made international headlines by championing Taiwanese democracy from the Ozzfest and Wacken stages last summer, has recently finished recording their new album, “Mirror of Retribution” (a concept album), in Los Angeles with producer (and Anthrax guitarist) Rob Caggiano (Cradle of Filth, Bleeding Through). This marks the band's first-ever recording sessions in America.

"We had a good time working in Denmark for three albums, but we had some exciting chemistry between us and Rob, a new producer with a fresh vision and a fresh environment," says ChthoniC vocalist Freddy Lim. "We like Rob's past work very much -- especially the depth and strength of all the different instruments -- and as a huge fan of Anthrax, it was our pleasure to work with him." More...

Chthonic Prepare For Ensiferum Tour

The Taiwanese symphonic black metal band CHTHONIC kicks off the third and final leg of its European "UNlimited" tour Friday night (Nov. 30) in Hamburg, Germany. For the next two weeks, the group will support the Finnish "heroic folk metal" act ENSIFERUM.

CHTHONIC's European tour began earlier this month with a week's worth of UK dates with 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, with whom they shared the stage at this summer's Ozzfest. "Touring with 3 INCHES OF BLOOD made us miss the Ozzfest days," says CHTHONIC vocalist Freddy Lim. "We have so many good memories from Ozzfest, and we made so many friends there. I hope we can tour with such good bands again in the future."

The UK tour also included a stop at the inaugural Hard Rock Hell festival, where CHTHONIC performed alongside recent U.S. tour mates CRADLE OF FILTH as well as such legends as SAXON and TWISTED SISTER. "We were so excited when TWISTED SISTER took the stage," Lim admits. "Those old headbangers really encouraged us to keep rocking for many more decades!" More...

Chthonic Kick Off Tour, Ready New Compilation

The Taiwanese symphonic black metal band CHTHONIC, who this summer became the first-ever Asian extreme metal band to tour with Ozzfest, kicked off their European tour last night (November 7) in Wolverhampton, England. The band will play a week's worth of shows with Ozzfest tour mates 3 Inches of Blood -- including a performance at the inaugural Hard Rock Hell festival - before joining Marduk for a short trek throughout Eastern Europe and Finland. From there, ChthoniC will team with "heroic folk metal" warriors Ensiferum for a two-week tour of Western Europe.

Vocalist Freddy Lim says that some fans in Wolverhampton - where ChthoniC had never before played - even knew all their songs. "We couldn't wait to be back on the road again," he says. "The passionate UK fans quickly helped us forget all about the long flight from Taiwan. Some of them told us they've been waiting years to see us, and on stage I can feel their passion!"

In other news, SPV/Deathlight will release a new ChthoniC compilation, Pandemonium, early next year. This album will feature re-recorded versions of many older, hard-to-find ChthoniC songs as well as several selections from their most recent studio album, "Seediq Bale." For new fans, "Pandemonium" will provide the perfect introduction to Taiwan's most successful musical ambassadors; for older fans, the album makes these cult classics finally sound the way they were always intended to be heard.

The track listing is as follows:
'City Of Obscurity' (new instrumental)
'Onset Of Tragedy' (new recording; original version appears on 2002's Relentless Recurrence)
'Revert To Mortal Territory' (new recording; original version appears on 2002's Relentless Recurrence)
'Grab the Soul To Hell' (new recording; original version appears on 2002's Relentless Recurrence)
'Decomposition Of The Mother Isle' (Aboriginal Gods Enthroned) (new recording; original version appears on 1998's Where The Ancestors' Souls Gathered)
'Floated Unconsciously In The Acheron' (new recording; original version appears on 2000's 9th Empyrean)
'Indigenous Laceration' (from Seediq Bale)
'Bloody Gaya Fulfilled' (from Seediq Bale)
'Quasi Putrefaction' (from Seediq Bale)
'Guard The Isle Eternally' (new recording; original version appears on 2000's 9th Empyrean)
'Relentless Recurrence' (new recording; original version appears on 2002's Relentless Recurrence)

Like other ChthoniC releases, Pandemonium will feature lavish packaging that includes 10 collectible "song cards," unique digibox packaging with album art featuring Kuan, the "Ghost King" who graces all ChthoniC covers, and a chronology that details the band's decade-long evolution from underground obscurity into one of the fastest-rising international stars in heavy metal.

"It wasn't easy for us to learn how to produce or record a quality metal album in Taiwan, a country that used to be a metal desert," Lim explains. "The earlier albums are important to us, and they remind us vividly of the memorable journey that ChthoniC has been on, but it was great to be able to combine modern technology and 10 years of experience with the old songs we like the most to make them better, and to let fans get a different taste of them."

Chthonic To Tour Europe

Before the Taiwanese band ChthoniC -- who this summer became the first-ever extreme metal band from Asia to tour with Ozzfest -- kicks off its mainland European tour with Finnish "heroic folk metal" warriors Ensiferum this fall, the group will embark on a brief U.K. tour with Ozzfest tour mates 3 Inches of Blood.

"We had a great time hanging out with 3 Inches of Blood at Ozzfest and
enjoyed their playing a lot," says ChthoniC front man Freddy Lim. "We can't wait to tour with them in England!"

The tour includes a stop at the inaugural Hard Rock Hell festival in Minehead, England, which also features such legendary groups as Twisted Sister, Cradle of Filth, My Dying Bride and Tesla, among others. The itinerary is as follows:

Nov. 7 - Little Civic - Wolverhampton, UK
Nov. 8 - The Brook - Southampton, UK
Nov. 9 - Hard Rock Hell festival - Minehead, UK
Nov. 12 - The New Freebutt - Brighton, UK
Nov. 13 - Barfly - London, UK

These mark the first shows of the European leg of ChthoniC's "UNlimited" tour -- named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country -- which kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002's "Relentless Recurrence" and last year's "A Decade On The Throne" 2CD/DVD live set. The current North American leg, which concludes on Saturday (Sept. 22), consists of 60 concerts, including two dozen "off-fest" performances with Nile and a handful of dates supporting black metal legends Cradle of Filth.

The ChthoniC/Ensiferum tour of Western Europe, which also features the Swedish power metal act Insania as openers, kicks off in Hamburg, Germany on Nov. 30. A complete itinerary can be seen at http://www.myspace.com/chthonictw

Chthonic Vocalist Speaks At U.N. Press Conference

This is the speech made by Freddy, Chthonic's vocalist in New York City and Washington, DC on the 12th and 13th September's press conferences.

Freddy Lim, Vocalist of ChthoniC
2007/09/12

"As a musician, I am here to make noise for my fans. As a Taiwanese citizen, I am here to make noise for my countrymen. I have sung across America for more than 2 months for my fans, and now I will take the opportunity here to speak for my fellow Taiwanese.

Taiwan's sparkling talents range from sculptor Ming Chu, to the internationally-acclaimed director Ang Lee, to the internationally renowned Cloud Gate dance troup, to the Sahara-crossing ultra-marathon runner Kevin Lin, to Major League Baseball players such as New York Yankees star Chien-ming Wang. Taiwan's creative gifts and energy can not be contained within borders or forced to abide by the restrictions of political deal-making. The 23 million people of Taiwan are living diligently and sensibly, with the wish to freely thrive in this world as equal partners on our shared planet. Like the people mentioned above, we are not politicians, and all we can do is to fight our best in our own career, to use the cultural power to fight against Chinese strong military threats, and -- through the artistic language -- to spread ideals that our countrymen believe about how the international society puts limitations on Taiwan.

During our two-month American tour, most fans and media have supported the message that we carry during this tour. At our concerts, the fans show their anger toward those politicians in United Nations by shouting and even cursing; back home, these fans even put their efforts of supporting Taiwan into their daily life, like a report I've just received from a fan who wrote about Taiwan for her Social Justice Action class project to spread the message to her classmates and friends. For these young people, it's very logical and natural to support Taiwan to join the international society and for Taiwanese to share the same international rights that they have, but the politicians in United Nations seem to think it's more logical and natural to sacrifice Taiwan in their political games."

Chthonic And Ensiferum Announce European Tour

Taiwanese extreme metalists CHTHONIC — fresh from a tour of duty with Ozzfest and currently in the midst of their first-ever North American headline shows, which precede a brief tour with CRADLE OF FILTH — have confirmed their first batch of fall European tour dates. They are as follows:

Nov. 09 - Hard Rock Hell Festival - Minehead, U.K.
Nov. 30 - Markthalle - Hamburg, Germany
Dec. 01 - Lindenpark - Potsdam, Germany
Dec. 02 - Alte Spinnerei - Glauchau, Germany
Dec. 04 - Bastard Club - Osnabruck, Germany
Dec. 06 - Romein - Leeuwarden, Holland
Dec. 07 - Biebob - Vosselaar, Belgium
Dec. 09 - Substage - Karlsruhe, Germany
Dec. 11 - Wigwam - Budapest, Hungary
Dec. 12 - Fleda - Brno, Czech Republic
Dec. 13 - Colos Saal - Aschaffenburg, Germany
Dec. 14 - Z7 - Pratteln, Switzerland
Dec. 15 - Hexentanz Festival - Illingen, Germany

All concerts in continental Europe will see CHTHONIC play alongside Finnish "heroic folk metal" warriors ENSIFERUM (Spinefarm Records). Additional performances — including the band's first-ever U.K. tour — will be announced shortly.

CHTHONIC will hold a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 13, just hours before they play the nearby Jaxx nightclub in West Springfield, Virginia.

At the press conference, which will be moderated by Jaxx owner Jay Nedry, the band will discuss the message behind their current tour, which they've dubbed "UNlimited" to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

CHTHONIC will continue its historic "UNlimited" tour later this month, when it will perform its first headlining concerts in America.

"Ozzfest has been a great experience for CHTHONIC, but we're excited to perform for our fans for longer than 20 minutes," Freddy Lim stated.

In concert, CHTHONIC (pronounced "THON-ick") will continue to perform the tour's theme song, "UNlimited Taiwan", written and recorded this spring "to emphasize the 'UNlimited' potential of Taiwan and the Taiwanese people," Lim says. Like the tour — which kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002's "Relentless Recurrence" and last year's "A Decade On The Throne" two-CD/DVD live set — the song was named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country. The Washington Post and the International Herald Tribune, among others, have recently devoted lengthy features to the message behind the tour.

With a new session of the United Nations General Assembly scheduled to open in New York on Sept. 18, many pro-Taiwan rallies will be held around the city in the days beforehand. To coincide with the UN session's kickoff — where Taiwan will once again petition to be formally recognized as an independent country, and not a Chinese province — CHTHONIC will hold a special "UNlimited New York" concert at Manhattan's Highline Ballroom, located less than three miles from the UN, on Sept. 16.

Because this is the group's third New York City concert in recent weeks, coming on the heels of an Aug. 21 performance with NILE and a Sept. 6 concert alongside KATATONIA, CHTHONIC has arranged for the Highline Ballroom to offer tickets for only $5 to anyone who redeems a ticket stub from one of their previous shows at the venue's box office. For everyone else, a $2 discount can be obtained by purchasing the tickets online at www.highlineballroom.com (enter "un4taiwan" in the access code field). Furthermore, the first 100 fans in the doors will receive a free set of CHTHONIC "paper dolls," which are sold in toy stores throughout Asia.

Chthonic To Hold N.Y.Concert Prior To U.N. Kickoff

Chthonic To Tour Europe With Ensiferum

Taiwanese metal icons CHTHONIC — currently impressing American crowds at Ozzfest, where they're the first-ever Asian extreme metal act to perform — have confirmed their first European tour, which will see them play alongside "heroic folk metal" warriors ENSIFERUM (Spinefarm Records). The Finnish band had a No. 1 single and a Top 10 album in its home country earlier this year and also recently cracked the Top 40 on the German album chart. Dates and venues will be announced in the coming weeks.

"We're very excited to continue taking the 'UNlimited' tour abroad," says CHTHONIC vocalist Freddy Lim. "It's always been a dream to tour internationally, and it's amazing that within a few months' time, we've been able to play the biggest metal festivals in both America and Germany and tour so extensively. Europe will never be the same after the Taiwan Typhoon strikes!"

CHTHONIC's "UNlimited" tour — named to protest how the United Nations (UN) limits Taiwan's full participation as an independent country — kicked off in Taipei earlier this summer following the international re-release of 2002's "Relentless Recurrence" and last year's "A Decade On The Throne" two-CD/DVD live set. The North American leg consists of 60 shows, including two dozen "off-fest" concerts with NILE and a handful of September dates supporting black metal legends CRADLE OF FILTH.

CHTHONIC, who also performed at the sold-out Wacken Open Air festival in Germany earlier this month, will kick off their European tour by playing alongside TWISTED SISTER, MY DYING BRIDE, THE 69 EYES, TESLA and dozens more at the Hard Rock Hell festival in Minehead, England on Nov. 9.

Chthonic Promotes Taiwan On U.S. Tour

In an interview on the PBS program "Pacifictime", Chthonic lead vocalist Freddy Lin said that the band had spoken out for Taiwan's causes, mainly its difficulties in joining international organizations because of Beijing's obstruction, during its performances at Ozzfest 2007 last month.

Lin said Chthonic has given 20 performances at Ozzfest this year, which is being held all over the U.S.

Lin said the band performed both in Mandarin and Hoklo (also known as Taiwanese), but he was not worried that their songs might not be accepted by U.S. fans because heavy metal audiences pay more attention to the music than lyrics.

"UNlimited Taiwan", however, was performed in English to demonstrate the band's support for Taiwan's bid to join the UN, he said.

Lin said he spoke out in English at every concert, asking fans to support Taiwan as the band's music was inspired in and by the nation.

The seven-minute PBS interview is expected to be rebroadcast by 15 other PBS stations in the next few months, Lin said, adding that fans in Hong Kong and southern China will also be able to catch the interview on channel Radio 3.

The interview can also be found online at www.kqed.org/pacifictime.

Chthonic is still on the road with Ozzfest and will do several off dates with Nile through August.

Chthonic Supports Cradle of Filth On Select Dates

Taiwanese act CHTHONIC — the first-ever Asian extreme metal act invited to tour with Ozzfest — has been tapped to support the legendary CRADLE OF FILTH at four intimate September shows. These will be the final concerts of the band's first North American tour, and the conclusion of the first leg of their "UNlimited Tour".

"It's our pleasure to tour with CRADLE OF FILTH," says vocalist Freddy Lim. "They are one of the bands who inspired us to write this kind of music."

CHTHONIC (pronounced "THON-ick") took a detour from Ozzfest last week in order to travel to Germany, where the group performed at Wacken Open Air, the country's largest annual heavy metal festival. They rejoined Ozzfest in St. Louis on Aug. 6, the first in a stretch of 25 shows in 25 days that also includes a dozen "off-fest" shows alongside NILE. More...

It will then be re-broadcast twice on KNAC.com, first on July 30 from 7-9 p.m. PST and again on August 5 from 7-9 a.m. PST.

ChthoniC is currently in the midst of its first American tour, a two-month trek that will see them play more than 60 concerts across the country. Meanwhile, the band continues to post regular entries to its "UNlimited Taiwan" tour diary at its official MySpace page, www.myspace.com/chthonictw.

The "UNlimited Taiwan" tour will become even more global in scope next month when ChthoniC -- whose 2002 release, Relentless Recurrence, and last year's live DVD/CD A Decade on the Throne were recently released in America for the first time -- will miss one Ozzfest stop in order to perform at Wacken Open Air, Germany's largest annual metal festival. ChthoniC will then return to the U.S. for another six weeks of touring, to be followed by the group's first full European tour this fall.
