Chthonic Frontman To Appear On CMJ Metal Panel

Vocalist and lyricist Freddy of the Taiwanese symphonic black metal band Chthonic will appear on the “From Glam to Death: Metal Subgenre Feasts” panel at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York City.

The panel will be held at 3:45 p.m. on November 3 at Lincoln Center's Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse on the 10th Floor of the Samuel B. & David Rose Building, Lincoln Center, 165 W. 65th Street (at Amsterdam Avenue).

Freddy will be joined by Justin Brannan, guitarist for Most Precious Blood; Jamie Foster, lead singer for Arc of Descent; Jimmy Pallis, lead singer for Anaka; and Trevor Phipps, lead singer for Unearth.

The hour-long panel will provide an open forum for top artists and experts specializing in different types of heavy metal. The discussion will include the realities of having a niche fanbase versus trying to appeal to more mainstream audience, the best ways to get media exposure, and the risks and rewards of being identified with a metal subgenre.

Chthonic, Taiwan’s biggest metal export, released its fourth album, “Seediq Bale,” on October 3 through Down Port Music.

Deemed the “the Black Sabbath of Asia” by the Taipei Times for its huge impact as a metal band in Taiwan, Chthonic plays black metal with an ethnic flair. “Seediq Bale” tells the Taiwanese legend of the Seediq people and their strife and struggles against the Japanese. The use of an er-hu, a unique Asian two-string violin, brings an additional element of sadness to Chthonic’s eerie music.

Chthonic was awarded “Best Rock Group” at the 14th Annual Golden Melody Awards, the Eastern Asian equivalent of a Grammy. The award was presented to the band by none other than the country’s President Chen Shui-bian. “Music is more powerful, more moving than politicians,” the President said before the band joined him on stage.

Chthonic Ready Fourth Album, "Seediqbale"

Taiwan’s biggest metal export, the symphonic black metal band Chthonic, will release its fourth album, “Seediqbale,” on October 3 through Down Port Music/RED.

The weepy sounds of the er-hu, a two-string violin that dates back to Tang dynasty (618-907), gives Chthonic’s music an ethnic flare while adding another eerie layer to the band’s sounds of strife and tragedy.

“The Oriental two-string Violin is a common traditional instrument in many Eastern Asian countries like Taiwan, Korea, China, Hong-Kong, and Singapore,” said vocalist Freddy. “What is special about it is its plaintive, sad tone. I decided to learn from a traditional musician and started to play it in Chthonic’s music.”

Chthonic has stirred up controversy in the past with its strong Taiwanese pro-independence stance, which has been the focus of much of the band’s past material. In keeping with its culturally-inspired concepts, “Seediqbale” reaches further back into Taiwanese history to the legend of the Seediq and its struggle with Japan over land and religion.

Like two of the band’s previous albums, “Seediqbale” was recorded at Borsing Recordings in Denmark. “When Chthonic was formed in 1996, there was no extreme metal scene in Taiwan, not to mention the studios capable of producing this kind of music,” said Freddy. “So when we were prepared for our first album, we compared some of the black metal albums we had and chose Illdisposed’s album, because we liked its recording quality. Then we hooked up with the studio that recorded that album and became good friends with the boss, Jan Borsing. He has been working with us since then, including in some big live concerts in Taipei as our sound engineer.”

Hailing from a country with a little-known metal scene, Chthonic has gained national attention in its native land where it was awarded “Best Rock Group” at the 14th Annual Golden Melody Awards, the Eastern Asian equivalent of a Grammy. The award was presented to the band by none other than the country’s President Chen Shui-bian. “Music is more powerful, more moving than politicians,” the President said before the band joined him on stage.

The group capped off that momentous year by playing the annual New Year’s Eve live, nationally broadcasted concert in front of President’s Hall and the release of the band’s Mandarin theme for the 21st Century Fox Taiwan release of “Freddy vs. Jason.”

Chthnonic’s previous albums. “Where the Ancestors’ Souls Gathered,” “9th Empyrean,” and “Relentless Recurrence,” have been recorded in both Mandarin and English.

The group made its United States debut at the 2002 Metal Meltdown festival and returned that year for a performance at the Milwaukee Metalfest.

Taiwanese Band Chthonic Play President's Hall

Taiwanese metal band CHTHONIC will finish out a momentous year in its career with two more extraordinary events: playing the annual New Years Eve concert in front of Presidents Hall and the release of the bands Mandarin theme for the 21st Century Fox Taiwan release of Freddy vs. Jason.

The New Years Eve show will also be broadcasted live by FTV (Formosa TV). Earlier this year, CHTHONIC won Best Rock Group award at the 14th annual Golden Melody Award, the biggest music award in Mandarin countries. The award was presented to the group by Taiwan's president Chen Shui-bian.

Though the Freddy vs. Jason film will not be released until January 22nd, CHTHONIC's theme single, 'Satans Horns' is set for release on December 30th. A music video for the track will combine footage of CHTHONIC and film clips for a truly horrifying visual experience.

CHTHONIC will be at the January 17 Freddy vs. Jason premier and press conference to promote the film. The band will also play a Freddy vs. Jason concert on January 31st at The Wall House Live in Taipei. The concert is free to anyone with a Freddy vs. Jason ticket stub.

The group made it's United States debut at the 2002 Metal Meltdown festival and returned that year for a performance at the Milwaukee Metalfest. There are no immediate plans for the band to return to the US as of now.
