Chthonic Working On New Album Cover

As the new album from Taiwanese extreme metal band, Chthonic, undergoes mixing at Sweet Spot studio in Sweden, the work on the album's cover has also begun in Taiwan.

After nearly 100 hopeful candidates replied to a casting call, which called for girls who were "at least 160cm tall, skinny, with light skin, and are ok with full-body painting," Chthonic bassist Doris Yeh and the art design team decided on Bu to represent the album's cover girl.

"It's certainly not an easy job for ancient Chinese emperors to choose their wives," said Yeh jokingly after several sleepless nights of deliberation. "I was even looking through the pictures in my dreams!"

With a concept in mind to have an elder, a girl, and a child as the cover picture, and visualize the idea of armed body and mind through special makeup and computer graphics, the search began for candidates to represent the theme. Embodiments for the roles of the elder and the child were quickly decided. Hsu Ching-fu, a clergyman from the Gikong Presbyterian Church, and A-Chi, son of a well-known tattooist Ah-J, were picked to represent these figures.

The shooting of the album cover photo was completed late last month. The new album, the band's seventh overall, is slotted to be released in Europe, North America, and Asia in June on Spinefarm/Universal Music.

In the meantime, the band has been hard at work promoting its new mobile app game, the first of its kind to use exclusively heavy metal music, "Chthonic - Rhythm Crusher." More...

Crowbar And More Added To Bloodstock

With a plethora of metal talent already on offer - including Alice Cooper, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Testament, Hatebreed and loads more - Bloodstock Open Air has another addition to it’s main stage, in the form of New Orleans sludge-monsters Crowbar. The organizers of the festival commented:

"The epitome of heavy, Kirk Windstein and co have been showing the world that speed isn’t everything since their debut 'Obedience Thru Suffering' stunned the metal world in 1991 with its downtuned, slow-paced yet punishingly heavy sound. With nine studio albums under their very large belts, Crowbar have mastered the art of the riff, continually delivering irresistible sludgey metal via a sound uniquely their own. With mammoth sludgey slabs such as 'I Despise,' 'All I Had (I Gave),' 'Time He’s Nothing,' 'Like Broken Glass,' 'Nothing' and many more, the Ronnie James Dio Stage will be put to the test at Crowbar’s only UK festival of 2012.

"Over on the Sophie stage, additions come in the form of homegrown extreme symphonic metallers and Metal 2 The Masses winners Saturnian, fellow countrymen and Melo-death thrashers Bloodshot Dawn, as well as Finnish melodic death metallers Re-Armed."

Tickets and more information on the festival can be found at the official Bloodstock website. The currently announced lineup is as follows: More...

Chthonic: The Final Battle At Sing Ling Temple

The ornate and historic Sing Ling Temple, located on a hillside in the scenic mountain town of Puli in Nantou County, Central Taiwan, played host to Taiwan’s top extreme metal band, Chthonic, this past Saturday. The temple is of special historical significance to Taiwan, as it was the site of a battle between Taiwanese troops and KMT soldiers following the 228 incident, in which many thousands of Taiwanese were massacred by the KMT over 40 years ago. Chthonic has since made the temple, along with local folklore and the Taiwanese fight for recognition of their independence, a central focus of their music and lyrics.

Fans began lining up hours in advance of the concert’s 6:30 p.m. start time, climbing the steep hillside steps leading up to the bright orange thatched roofs and delicate masonry of the temple proper to the staging area just behind it. A film crew, documenting the concert for a future DVD release, lugged hundreds of kilograms of gear, including a large swing-arm camera that dipped and dove over the heads of the fans throughout the show, up the stairs in temperatures that reached an unseasonably high 30 degrees plus.

Crew members, international music press from around Asia and Europe, including a representative of Metal Hammer magazine (UK), and a few lucky friends and fans looked on as Chthonic battled and overcame sound problems early on during their sound check. Special guest vocalist, the affable and approachable Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), lounged in the shade of a ring of trees surrounding the staging area, clad in a black Misfits T-shirt, wraparound shades, backwards baseball cap, and camouflage shorts, awaiting his call to the huge steel stage constructed for the occasion. The stage came complete with poly casts of huge stone sculptures of mythical beasts usually found guarding the front gates of temples in Taiwan, and a large backdrop featuring the Chthonic logo, all designed by local artist, photographer and art teacher Oink Chen. Chthonic Comments On New Video

Taiwanese black metal act Chthonic recently posted a new music video online for the single "Takao," which can be viewed at this location.

"The original version of this chorus is totally Taiwanese folk style, but the version that Ensiferum's singing sounds so Finnish folk! So amazing, we definitely want to share this version with our fans!" said Doris Yeh, leader and bassist of Chthonic.

Yu Tien, a popular Taiwanese Enka singer, also provided vocals for the original version of "Takao." The track is about Taiwanese soldiers departing from the Takao Harbor to join the Pacific War. "Yu Tien's voice perfectly provided the passionate vibe of the song." Doris said, "But not just passion, there are many kinds of emotions of these soldiers, they might be struggling, passion, or confused. You can find all these feeling in this song."

The band also commented on the filming: "In order to show the different emotions of this song, Chuang Chih-wen, the director of Takao's Music Video, filmed this video in a very different way. There are many slow shots with many different objects such as eagle, cherry blossoms, and even Type Zero fighter aircraft, which is considered as one of the most classic fighter aircraft during World War II.

"During the filming, the 80-year-old character who has kept working very hard with the crew. He even didn't want to get rest for hours. After the filming, he said 'My father was a soldier of Takasago army, now I'm playing his role, I have to make it perfect!' His comment touched everybody in the studio."
