Chthonic's Freddy Lim Running For Office

Remember when Chthonic started a political party? Turns out something's actually coming of that.

"Using music to change the world" is a slogan that appears often in the history of rock, however, in Taiwan, a man is turning it into reality: Chthonic lead vocalist Freddy Lim is traveling the road of music to parliament. Oon December 26th, a Formosa Defenders outdoor concert will be held in place of a campaign rally.

Formed in 1995, the Taiwanese band Chthonic, now under the Universal Music/Spinefarm Records banner, features a blend of unique oriental melody and heavy metal music. Chthonic has released eight albums recounting stories of struggles against authoritarian repression that have touched fans around the globe. The band's lyrics have historically focused on accounts of the country's inhabitants fighting against repressive regimes in history that textbooks refused to tell in addition to their public displays of support for social movements and human rights activities, including last year's Sunflower Movement and this year's student protests against the Ministry Of Education's adjustments in high school curriculum guidelines.

Beyond Chthonic, Lim also serves as the lead vocalist of a band that he formed with former Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman, Metal Clone X, which has released two albums in Taiwan and Japan. Lim has also organized two of the most well known music festivals -- the Formoz Festival and Megaport Festival -- with participation from the likes of Muse, Megadeth, and Moby and was behind the Say Yes To Taiwan and With Justice We Cure This Nation concerts that focused on public issues such as transitional justice. Chthonic Starts A Political Party

Taiwanese metal outfit Chthonic has posted the following message online about taking part in the creation of a new political party:

"Ladies and gentlemen, dear comrades, I am Freddy Lim.

"I have never joined any political party, and I never expected that, the first party that I join would be a party which I participated in its creation. This is actually how my life has always been—I do whatever I feel like doing, if there’s something I don’t like, I don’t just criticize, I do it myself. Whether it’s forming a band, launch a record company, organize a music festival, or creating a venue for performance, if I want to do it, I start from scratch, it doesn’t matter if I have to start with one or two people, this is how I do things whether in Taiwan or around the world.

"But establishing a political party is a bit different, it’s not something that can be started with one or two people, it’s a work that takes everyone in the nation to complete the job. Therefore, though I’ve been chosen by our founding members as the representative of the party, I am not the so-called party chairperson, rather, I am the chief executive of the 'party founding team.'

"Starting with the 30 members in this 'party founding team,' we will have 100,000 people to officially launch the party with us in two months, let’s work together to create a party of our time!
Looking back into the past few years, the social force has been active in Taiwan, with several demonstrations that attracted hundreds of thousands of people each. This progressive force—coming from different walks of life in the society—even instigated changes in local political environment through voting last year. Now, it’s time for this progressive force to change the nation at once.

"Therefore, starting today, we will be in close contact with the people across the country—in front of temples, in coffee shops, in clubs, on the street, or on the Internet—we will pull together all these forces, we will have these people to vote for leaders in the party, and have the 100,000 people to nominate legislative candidates, we will turn the social force into political force, and make it 'force of the time' to change Taiwan. Chthonic Posts Acoustic Video

Chthonic just released a video for an acoustic rendition of the track "Defenders of Bú-Tik Palace," taken off the "Bú-Tik" album reviewed here). The band also comments on the clip:

"A Taiwanese soldier who belongs to Japan Imperial Army was finally back from the battle ground in WWII and reunited with his beloved, but what he doesn't know is the 'KMT Party' of China which were defeated by Communist Party in their civil war came to Taiwan after Japan left here.

"Soon after their coming, many Taiwanese rebelled against KMT's cruel governance. But then, there was a 228 Massacre happened. Hundreds of thousands Taiwanese people got arrested and killed in secret. Once again, their beloved lost them, but this time they can only reunite in the dream which was never happened in reality."

It has now become a 'tradition' for the fans in Taiwan to come to our show with ghost money, they throw in the air to show respect and release all kinds of their emotions. Chthonic Kicks Off Taiwanese Baseball Season

The second season of Taiwan’s professional baseball league kicked off on July 5th, with Chthonic being invited by the team The Brother Elephants as guests of honor to throw the first pitch.

Thunderstorms that afternoon had delayed equipment preparation and the band was forced to perform its rendition of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” without any sort of soundcheck. Fortunately Chthonic, bedecked in specially designed uniforms, completed the mission with great success, as the rapturous crowd reaction so poignantly confirmed.

The Brother Elephants contacted Chthonic following the band’s performance at Download Festival in the UK this year. To maximize the effect of the metal and baseball combination, Chthonic was also invited to perform. The band brainstormed ideas and had initially planned on doing a version of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game,” but the many variations "sounded like children’s songs" according to a press release, thus Chthonic went with “We Are the Champions.” More...

Chthonic Working On New Album Cover

As the new album from Taiwanese extreme metal band, Chthonic, undergoes mixing at Sweet Spot studio in Sweden, the work on the album's cover has also begun in Taiwan.

After nearly 100 hopeful candidates replied to a casting call, which called for girls who were "at least 160cm tall, skinny, with light skin, and are ok with full-body painting," Chthonic bassist Doris Yeh and the art design team decided on Bu to represent the album's cover girl.

"It's certainly not an easy job for ancient Chinese emperors to choose their wives," said Yeh jokingly after several sleepless nights of deliberation. "I was even looking through the pictures in my dreams!"

With a concept in mind to have an elder, a girl, and a child as the cover picture, and visualize the idea of armed body and mind through special makeup and computer graphics, the search began for candidates to represent the theme. Embodiments for the roles of the elder and the child were quickly decided. Hsu Ching-fu, a clergyman from the Gikong Presbyterian Church, and A-Chi, son of a well-known tattooist Ah-J, were picked to represent these figures.

The shooting of the album cover photo was completed late last month. The new album, the band's seventh overall, is slotted to be released in Europe, North America, and Asia in June on Spinefarm/Universal Music.

In the meantime, the band has been hard at work promoting its new mobile app game, the first of its kind to use exclusively heavy metal music, "Chthonic - Rhythm Crusher." More...
