Big 4 Dominate Yankee Stadium
Never in my life have I been so eager to make the 3½ hour drive from Boston to Manhattan. And as a lifelong Red Sox fan, Yankee Stadium is not a place I like. But to catch one of just two Big 4 shows in the U.S., I would have worn a Yankees jersey if I had to. Well maybe that’s going a little too far.
Me and two comrades in metal piled into my Toyota Matrix at 8 a.m. Wednesday and sped toward what we knew was going to be heavy metal nirvana. We checked into our hotel, grabbed a quick bite and hopped the D train from mid-town up to the Bronx where we were greeted by a glorious scene: a sea of black T-shirt clad warriors filing toward metal mecca. Thousands unfortunately missed Anthrax as they were stuck outside the security gates in massive lines that moved at a snail’s pace.
Too bad because the native New Yorkers set it off proper.
“It’s a beautiful day for metal,” Anthrax vocalist Joey Belladonna boomed, welcoming the crowd to the historic day. “I can’t believe we made it into this building. They never let metal in here.” Well they sure did this day. More...
"Big 4" New York Footage Available
Metal Injection has posted footage online of the "Big 4" event at Yankee Stadium in New York City, which can be viewed below. The clip features Metallica, Anthrax, Chris Broderick, David Ellefson, and Shawn Drover of Megadeth, Kerry King and Dave Lombardo of Slayer, and Gary Holt on stage to pay homage to Motorhead, playing the classic track "Overkill."
Metal Legends Take Stage With Anthrax
The second Metal Masters clinic took place tonight at the Best Buy Theater in New York City. Anthrax was scheduled to perform at 9pm EST, but what fans did not know is their special guest line up earlier in the night would make metal history. Frank Bello, Charlie Benante, and Scott Ian from Anthrax were joined on stage by David Ellefson of Megadeth, ex Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, Slayer's Kerry King, and former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo. The Best Buy Theater erupted when the group broke into some of Pantera's most memorable hits. You can see video of the songs "A New Level" and "Fucking Hostile" below.
Anthrax, Testament, Death Angel Tour Announced
Anthrax and Testament, who haven't toured together in more than a decade, are set to co-headline a U.S. tour beginning Friday, October 14 in Grand Rapids, MI. Anthrax will close all shows, and Death Angel will be main support for the entire tour. The coast-to-coast trek will hit more than two dozen cities over a five-week period, with both Anthrax and Death Angel debuting brand new material from their new albums, both set for summer/fall release; Testament's new album is set to be released in 2012.
"We've been tight with the guys in Testament for a long, long time," said Anthrax's Charlie Benante. "so we're really looking forward to hanging out with them on the road. And all of us in Anthrax are big Death Angel fans, so this is going to be a monster of a good time - for all of us and for the fans. Plus, with the incredible success of The Big Four shows over the last year, we wanted to tour with some of the 'second wave' of thrash bands."
The tour will follow Anthrax's Big Four "hometown" appearance at Yankee Stadium on September 14, with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.
"We're excited to do this tour because Anthrax was actually the first band we ever toured with," adds Testament vocalist Chuck Billy. "It's an accomplishment 20 odd years later that we're going to do it again. The tour kick-off date is actually about five days difference from the kick off date of the first tour 20 years ago. The first time we performed with Anthrax, we only had a total of ten songs, so obviously now we have many songs to pick from so it will be very different. It's good to see that a lot of the faces in the bands are the same as back when we first did this original tour 20 years ago."
Here are the latest Anthrax/Testament/Death Angel Fall 2011 tour dates, with more to be announced: More...

Returning To Form
We metal fans are a devoted lot. Once we find a favorite band, we tend to stick around through thick and thin. A favorite band tends to stay a favorite band, even when our tastes move on. And, yes, even when that band's sound changes or, even worse, when that band becomes "popular" based on a lighter sound, we often hang around.
Sure, we bitch about it, but I guarantee that more than half of the people who boldly claimed online that they were through with, say, Metallica, had purchased copies of "Load" and "Reload" (you know, just to complete the collection). It couldn't have just been the new fans turned on by the Black Album that did it. And yet, those of us who'd been there in the "Puppets" and "Justice" years held out hope that, just maybe, the band would come back to that style and aggression. We can all argue about whether "Death Magnetic" was the return to form we'd been looking for, but recently, I had the pleasure of listening to an album by another thrash mainstay that definitely is.
I've been asked to hold off on a full review of Anthrax's "Worship Music" until closer to the release date, but suffice it to say that this is the album that fans have been waiting for for a very long time. Tracks like "Fight 'Em Til You Can't" recapture the comic book and horror-film fun of the "Among The Living" era, while the appropriately dirge-like "In The End" recalls the slow stomp of "Keep It In The Family" from "Persistence Of Time." But rather than simply reconstitute the successful formula of their early work — a la "Death Magnetic" — the band has also kept around the best of what worked during the John Bush era, namely an increased push toward melody and groove. I could (and will) go on at length later, but suffice it to say that I think a lot of fans will be pleasantly shocked by just how far this album exceeds expectations.
I've had this experience before. A dyed-in-the-wool Megadeth fan, I thrilled to the early years of "Killing Is My Business ... And Business Is Good!" and "Peace Sells ... But Who's Buying?" Things reached fever pitch with "Rust In Peace" — and then the band entered what I tend to think of as its "pop phase." Dave Mustaine has said that he was in the hunt for a No. 1 album, and the choices that were made on many of the albums that followed in the 1990s ("Countdown To Extinction," "Youthanasia," "Cryptic Writings" and "Risk") bore that out. Gone were the multilayered songs that crammed three time changes and four solos into three minutes. Now, comparative (some would argue radio-ready) simplicity was the order of the day, with Mustaine himself contributing less in the way of guitar solos. Worse yet, with "Risk," Mustaine seemed to be trend-chasing, adding bursts of electronica to the mix to poor effect.
Granted, the comeback for Megadeth started with "The World Needs A Hero," in which the thrash started gaining a bit more prevalence. It continued with "The System Has Failed," which featured Mustaine trading solos with original Megadeth ax-man Chris Poland.
Then came "United Abominations," which absolutely blew the doors off. The fact that the band was arguably the most talented iteration of Megadeth (with ex-Eidolon players Shawn and Glen Drover on drums and guitar and James LoMenzo on bass) didn't hurt. From the opening machine-gun guitar of "Sleepwalker," it was obvious that the fiery aggression of the early years was back, tempered ever-so-slightly with the more melodic sounds of the 1990s. Dave Mustaine Hints at More Big 4 U.S. Shows
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine says if there will be any more Big 4 shows in the U.S. beyond the ones scheduled, it'll be up to Metallica.
Speaking with Metalunderground.com yesterday backstage at the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival in Boston, Mustaine hinted that more dates could be on tap.
“I'm hoping that after we do the New York trek . . . we'll come back and do some more dates in the states," he said. “It's totally possible. Is it realistic right now? No. I think you'll have to ask the boys in Metallica about that. I think it's pretty obvious for the three of us that it's a good opportunity for us to play with Metallica."
Mustaine raved about the European shows and said he got along great on-stage with his former band, including once being asked by Kirk Hammett to play the solo during a cover of Diamond Head's "Helpless."
“The bands got along really good. Ticket sales were incredible," Mustaine said. “We planted our flag on top of the planet. If anyone doubted the four of us were the biggest bands in the world, we removed all that doubt.”
