Depravation Fest 2024: Day 3

As most reports on the final day of a festival say, all good things must come to an end. Depravation Festival, held in the south west England town Swindon opened very well on Friday, was a massive success the following day and the Sunday promised to be every bit as special. Today would see a healthy mix of rock and metal sub-genres coming together to cap off the weekend, which began with Birmingham outfit, Second Cities. While their home may be the birthplace of heavy metal, Second Cities were something a little different, feeling more like an emo revival act. I can remember seeing 2000s emo bands in the same venue back when the music was relevant, and I didn't like it then, but I'm always willing to give a group a chance. Unfortunately, my personal tastes haven't changed quite enough since those days to enjoy the music and while I encourage them to continue and develop a sound of their own, this didn't do much to get the early crowd interested, with the Adele cover feeling particularly off.

Second up, Bournemouth based progressive metal band Drallion. It may be asking a lot from an audience still reeling from a Saturday night to take in progressive metal but Drallion really knew how to hook them in. Their music is intelligent and fascinating, but also catchy and heavy, making them appealing to all kinds of metal fans. It helps that they have a solid stage presence too, so really, Drallion has everything going for them. Checking them out again after the show, "Bloodshot" and especially "New Machine," which was also a highlight of their set at Levels, are particularly highlights. A very good band with a hell of a lot to offer. Don't miss out!

Unfortunately, there were a few late cancellations today which caused some changes in the times and positions, and since Thrasherwolf couldn't make it due to a member having a Thrasherpup, Webb, who were scheduled to be the penultimate band in The Rolleston, took their place on the main stage. Like several, if not most bands on the bill over the weekend, I went into their set completely blind, or deaf as the case may be and sometimes that's the best way to go about it, because you'll be even more impressed if a band turns out to be good, which is exactly what happened here. Webb are unashamedly heavy metal, taking influence from the genre's 80s heyday, though leaning on the meaner side in the vein of say Exciter or Sacrifice than Iron Maiden or Saxon. The trio is a well oiled, good time, metal machine and I loved every second of them! Songs like "You're Going Down" and "Spread Your Wings" went down a storm and really kicked the crowd into a higher gear. Frontman Ryan Webb is cool as can be, donning the sunglasses and outfit that helps set them apart from other bands on the bill and he's got a hell of a voice to boot. There's a lot more going on than just the old school influence but if you want a band that still carries that attitude from the old days, Webb is the band for you. Superb! More...

Evile Posts "Monolith" Lyric Video Online

UK metal frontrunners Evile have released a lyric video for their heavy-as-hell single "Monolith," taken from their new album "The Unknown," out now via Napalm Records. You can check it out below.

"Our 4th single from 'The Unknown' is the juggernaut called 'Monolith,'" Evile frontman OL Drake comments. "This song started after Adam sent over the main riff and we got to work on building on it. Our aim was for something menacing and dark, and this might be a contender for my favourite track on the album. The song itself is based on a recurring nightmare I used to have when I was young. I had it for months on end and it always featured this monolith presence with eyes at its base. I would be terrified to go to sleep in case I have it again. Enjoy the chug!" More...

Evile Shares "When Mortal Coils Shed" Music Video

This Friday, July 14, English thrash metal frontrunners Evile will celebrate the release of their brand new, sixth studio album and second Napalm Records release, "The Unknown."

With "The Unknown," the four-piece proves that they are more than just a thrash band, churning out slower tempos with a heavier approach. In addition, melodic vocals meet serious, in-depth lyrical topics – ranging from depression, overcoming loss and recurring nightmares, self-esteem and image, to more personal themes like living with dementia, struggling through the music industry and even the concerns of becoming a new parent.

Their new single, "When Mortal Coils Shed", doubles down on that stirring new side of Evile while showcasing exceptional songwriting with haunting, deep and personal aspects.

Evile frontman OL Drake says: "The third single from The Unknown is ‘When Mortal Coils Shed’. We haven't done a ballad since ‘Tomb’ on the 2013 album Skull, and I only like to do them when it feels right; and this one felt very right. The song grew from the main clean riff and I felt the need to make something out of it. Once the lyrics needed writing, it became apparent that a subject close to me and the band would fit. This song is for everyone who has lost someone close to them and the struggles that come with the acceptance of losing them. Even years after they've left us, they're still missed, and the longing to be back at a time when they were still with us or for them to be back with us now is prevalent in our everyday lives. Enjoy." More...

Evile Releases New Lyric Video

This Friday, April 30, 2021, will see British thrash metal heavy weights Evile release their brand new studio album, entitled Hell Unleashed, via Napalm Records – the band‘s first album in eight long years! Since their formation in 2004, Evile have been turning heads and taking names, delivering four pure thrash offerings blended with an uncompromising death metal assault. Hell Unleashed, the long-awaited successor to their 2013 release Skull, will make no exception – but this time, the album features a new exciting line-up formation of Ol Drake on vocals/guitars and new member Adam Smith of RipTide as rhythm guitarist.

Today, the band has released a final single before the album drops – the thunderous new track "The Thing (1982)!" Intoxicating guitars build up to an unconditional, heavy storm of thrash metal: "The Thing (1982)" and its razor-sharp arrangement delivers another rousing aspect of EVILE‘s new album. Bold cinematic influences merge with breakneck speed riffs and Ol Drake‘s brute, unyielding vocals, highlighting Evile's potent musical expertise. Watch the brand new lyric video for "The Thing (1982)" below.

Evile vocalist/guitarist Ol Drake comments:

"The 3rd and final single from Hell Unleashed is not only based on my favourite movie of all time but it's a strong contender for my favourite song off the album. This track goes through so many cool changes, with frenetic vocals which mirror the subject matter, and we couldn't be prouder of not only this song, but the entire album it's featured on. Blast "The Thing" as loud as you can!"

Evile drummer Ben Carter recently spoke to Metal Underground about "Hell Unleashed" and other subjects. You can also find the interview below. More...

Evile Posts New Music Video Online

April 30, 2021 will see British thrash titans Evile release their brand new studio album, entitled "Hell Unleashed," via Napalm Records – the band‘s first album in eight long years! Since their formation in 2004, Evile have been turning heads and taking names, delivering four pure thrash offerings blended with an uncompromising death metal assault. Hell Unleashed, the long-awaited successor to their 2013 release "Skull," will make no exception – but this time, the album features a new exciting line-up formation of Ol Drake on vocals/guitars and new member Adam Smith of RipTide as rhythm guitarist.

Following the recent release of the blistering album title track from "Hell Unleashed," today, the band has released their second single – the sharp and hard-hitting new track "Gore!" With these raging riffs full of anger, Evile reach another dimension of pure evil, featuring the impressive backing vocals of American actor, comedian and musician Brian Posehn! Watch the new video clip for "Gore" in a worldwide premiere below.

Evile vocalist/guitarist Ol Drake comments:

"Here it is! The second new Evile single from the upcoming album 'Hell Unleashed.' This is a song about a topic that no other metal band has ever covered before; a serial killer. This song harkens back more to the first Evile album; it could easily be a track from our beginnings. It's heavy, it's fast, it has some great changes, and it will punch you in the face sonically. The overall message of this song/video is that these horrible individuals are hidden in plain sight. They could be our friends, family, or colleagues.

"We're also excited to welcome back the extremely hilarious and extremely metal comedian Brian Posehn. He was kind enough to provide us with some backing vocals in the chorus. Luckily, we only needed the one-word shouting, so we got a great collection of Posehn 'Gores' to sift through. Thank you, Brian!

"Turn it up LOUD, and enjoy 'GORE!'" More...

Evile Reveals New Album Details

Since their formation in 2004, British thrash titans Evile have been turning heads and taking names, delivering four pure thrash offerings blended with an uncompromising death metal assault! Their upcoming fifth studio album, entitled "Hell Unleashed," will impact the metal masses on April 30, 2021 via Napalm Records, and is the long-awaited successor to their 2013 release, "Skull." Featuring the new exciting line-up formation of the talented Ol Drake on vocals/guitars and new member Adam Smith of RipTide as rhythm guitarist, Hell Unleashed is a raucous and masterful thrash metal attack!

"After a long eight years, Evile is finally coming back with our fifth studio album, 'Hell Unleashed' in April; a nine-track onslaught of unrelenting Thrash Metal. I have no qualms in saying that this is the best Thrash Metal album in at least the last 20 years." Ol Drake comments. "Those who haven't been keeping up with Evile may notice a change in vocals and vocalist. Matt left the band last year for health and personal reasons, and we decided it would be best to keep the new vocalist a familiar face within the band, so I stepped into the vocalist shoes, while remaining on lead guitar and I'm very happy and excited to do it - one of my heroes is Chuck Schuldiner, so it made sense to me; Evile needs to sound evil and vile, and we've achieved that more this time with a much more aggressive approach on 'Hell Unleashed.'"

In celebration of their return and the announcement of "Hell Unleashed," the band has just revealed a blistering music video for the album‘s title track! With double the amount of power, twice the speed, untamed brute and blazing riffs, "Hell Unleashed" will propel old and new fans to the status of eternal mayhem and thrash euphoria. Watch Evile‘s brand new clip below. More...

Evile Signs With Napalm Records

British thrash metal unit Evile has announced that they have signed a worldwide contract with Napalm Records.

Since recently announcing some exciting new line-up changes with the talented Ol Drake on vocals/guitar and new member Adam Smith of RipTide as rhythm guitarist, they are now more than ready to drop some new material. Evile are currently in the studio recording the long awaited follow up to their 2013 release "Skull." More exciting news to come in early 2021 ...

Ol Drake, Evile, on the signing:
"We're extremely excited to announce our signing to Napalm Records! We'd heard a lot of great things about Napalm over the years and it's an honor to join the ranks of some excellent bands. EVILE haven't released any music since 2013 so we promise to deliver a crushing thrash metal classic which I believe will surprise everyone; even the die-hard "Grave" fans. As previously announced, Matt is unfortunately no longer a part of the band, so I've taken over on vocal duties while remaining on lead guitar too. Also, please welcome our newest member, Adam Smith of RipTide, on rhythm guitar. We begin recording with producer and engineer Chris Clancy on September 17 at Andy Sneap's Backstage Studios. We can't wait for you to hear what we have in store!"

Sebastian Münch, A&R and Product Manager Napalm Records:
"I am super excited to work with Ol Drake and my favorite British thrash metal band Evile. I've been a fan since "Enter The Grave”, and the new demos I've already listened to sound simply amazing! Expect a monster of an album in 2021! Welcome to the Napalm family!"

Evile are:
OL Drake - Vocals & Lead Guitar
Ben Carter – Drums
Joel Graham – Bass
Adam Smith - Rhythm Guitar

Guitarist Drake Rejoins Evile

Evile have been officially rejoined by guitarist Ol Drake. Drake parted ways with the group back in 2013 to pursue a solo career.

Comments Evile :

“We’ve been sat on this picture for a few weeks now, so we thought it was time to announce that we have a new lead guitarist….

We are beyond thrilled to be able to welcome Ol back!

Make sure to come and see us headline Manor Fest in Keighley on 12 May as it’s likely to be our only show this year. The link to tickets is on our events section.

After that we will be fully focusing on album number five for a planned release next year. We know that will make it five years between albums but the wait will be worth it.

Evile Returning To The Live Stage

Thrash act Evile has issued the following announcement about returning to the live setting next year and going it alone with no manager or label:

"Evile is coming back next year, we've been hard at work over the past few months with Piers, our new guitarist, to get up to speed with putting a great set together for our first show back at one of our favourite venues (so much of a favourite I named a song after it!), the Underworld in London, on March 28, 2015.

"We’ve still got a lot of work to do in the coming months to make sure we can be better than we’ve ever been but we’re treating this as a new start, I always hoped (idealistically) that Evile could be a band that kept the same members for as long as we lasted but obviously there are some things you just can’t fight or plan for and life just isn’t that straight forward.

"We want to make sure we put the time in to be stronger than ever but we can only all manage to be available at the same time for one or two rehearsals per week which is why we haven’t rushed straight back out there. We need to put the effort in to be as good a live band as we want to be, that’s what we’re aiming for starting next year. This time we are going the DIY route, we have no label or manager. Just ourselves and whatever stage people will let us play on. More...

Evile Postpones U.K. Tour Dates

U.K. thrash act Evile postponed the upcoming tour across the United Kingdom this September (dates shown here) due to "unforeseen circumstances." The plan is to have the shows rescheduled for sometime in 2014.

The following was posted on the band's Official Facebook Page:

"Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control we unfortunately have to postpone our upcoming shows in September across the UK. We apologize sincerely to everyone who was planning to attend and those who have already bought tickets.

"The shows aren't being cancelled outright, they will be happening sometime next year, so all tickets will still be valid at the same value when the shows have found new dates.

"In 14 years of playing shows we have only purposefully cancelled two shows, broken down on the way to four, and missed another two because of delayed flights, which isn't a bad record for all the years we've been playing, so postponing these September shows isn't a decision we've made lightly or easily.

"When we have new dates for the shows in 2014 we will announce them; as mentioned previously all tickets will still be valid. Again, we apologize wholeheartedly for the postponement, and thank you for the continued support you guys give us".
