Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Lars Ulrich Speaks About Downloading New Album
Metallica’s Lars Ulrich has revealed that he illegally downloaded Death Magnetic after it leaked ahead of the official release date last year.
Speaking to US DJ Eddie Trunk on VH1’s That Metal Show, Ulrich said “I sat there myself and downloaded 'Death Magnetic' from the Internet just to try it."
"I was like, 'Wow, this is how it works.' I figured if there is anybody that has a right to download 'Death Magnetic' for free, it's me. I sat there one night at my house with about six of my friends and a bottle of wine. We found it - this was like two or three days after Death Magnetic leaked. I was like, 'You know what? I've gotta try this.' So we sat there, and thirty minutes later, I had 'Death Magnetic' in my computer. It was kind of bizarre."

King Diamond Speaks On Guitar Hero: Metallica
Heavy metal legend King Diamond will be a part of the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica video game as a playable character aswell as having the song "Evil" from his old band Mercyful Fate included in the game. Speaking on the game he said: "It's been absolutely amazing to be a part of this Guitar Hero experience. It was quite a trip to re-record the song 'Evil' almost 25 years after the original recording took place. The end result with four out of the five original musicians turned out so much better than I would ever have hoped for. Seeing my animated character take form was totally eerie in a very good way. It's so strange to see yourself animated in such perfect detail - cross bone microphone, Eye necklace and all. This game looks and sounds METAL all the way. HORNS UP!!!"

Guitar Hero: Metallica Misspells Lynyrd Skynyrd
Rolling Stone is reporting that the cover of "Guitar Hero: Metallica" has misspelled "Lynyrd Skynyrd" as "Lynyrd Skynrd." The game cover can be viewed here. An excerpt from the article reads:
"Sadly, it seems the Southern rock heroes have lost a Y in their band name — haven’t they lost enough already? Even the (properly) misspelled Mercyful Fate get their name handled correctly, and the oft-mangled Mastodon pass the fact-checking test. It doesn’t mean that Skynyrd’s bluesy kiss-off “Tuesday’s Gone” will be any less fun to play, though."

Machine Head Members Enter Therapy
Machine Head's frontman Robb Flynn has posted a lengthy update online. The post reads as follows: "Drank my first sip of the Sizzurp the other night, I gotta say man, I was lovin' the Sizzurp. If you're not a wigger like me, and don't know what Sizzurp is, Wikipedia that shit, the explanation is hysterical. New wine I'm digging too, The Prisoner by a winery called Orin Swift out of Napa ($35)... good shit! Loving Chopin Polish Potato vodka too, kinda hard to find, but rockin'!
"Hope everyone had a cool holidays and New Year's. The fam and I had a good one ourselves. Had my wife's 16 family members and my Mom for some Christmas dinner at our house... ham, scalloped potatoes, some green beans, and lots of egg nog and XO Cognac... mmmm, man... sprinkle a little pumpkin spice on that shit... fuckin' great!
"We're out with METALLICA right now in America (that's right bitches! Main support to METALL-I-FUCKIN'-CA in America!) and we're super stoked about it! Most of those shows have been pretty sweet, so far Washington D.C. was hands-down the rowdiest crowd, with Milwaukee and Newark #2 a close second. They usually let all the Met-Club people in early and they have been treating us really well; very receptive to what we're doing, and it was cool starting to get to see and know some of them after a while. Tons of them went to multiple shows and manned the same spot on the barrier night after night. The stage is cool too. Having played in the corner of a room for over half of my life, it took some getting used to playing in-the-round, or, 'in-the-rectangle' if you wanna get technical. First night in L.A. was a disaster, but after that we got it down. We definitely command it now, and we *have* to command it. If we don't, it's so easy to just get lost up on that giant stage, and lose the attention of an audience who, for the most part, have never even heard of us. THE SWORD dudes are cool, had a couple good hang nights with them. Kind of a weird vibe on the tour as a whole though, but stage crew and Metalli-camp is totally fuckin' cool. More...
Hatebreed Reveals Covers Album, New Guitarist
HATEBREED has revealed the release date and tracklisting of their new covers album, "For The Lions." The album is set for release on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 via E1 Music (formerly KOCH Records). This new release is the follow-up to the band’s #1 Billboard charting DVD, LIVE DOMINANCE (released September of 2008).
The songs on "For The Lions" were carefully selected by HATEBREED to represent a panoramic view of some of their favorite artists and greatest musical inspirations. Having completed the album in 2008, the band felt their work wasn’t done yet and just returned to the studio with original guitar player Wayne Lozinak to record additional tracks for the album. The four new covers are among the most bludgeoning the band has yet to record. These include, “Ghosts Of War” (Slayer), “Supertouch/Shitfit (Bad Brains), “Thirsty” (Black Flag) and “Suicidal Maniac” (Suicidal Tendencies).
FOR THE LIONS was produced, engineered and mixed by long-time band associate Chris "Zeuss" Harris.
You can preview of “Suicidal Maniac” on the band's MySpace page.
In additional HATEBREED news, the band announced the departure of guitar player Sean M. Martin, welcoming back to the fold original guitarist Wayne Lozinak.
Front man Jamey Jasta says, “I speak on behalf of all of us and we support Sean's decision to leave and want him to be happy and successful at everything he does. There are no bad feelings at all and you'll probably see him hanging on stage at some of our local shows. We're family and he will be missed but HATEBREED will forge on.” More...
