Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica Drummer Speaks On Big Four U.S. Show
In an interview yesterday on the Kevin & Bean Show for KROQ-FM, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich explained why the "Big Four" (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer) have only scheduled one date in the United States so far. Speaking about the show, Ulrich said:
"Let's take baby steps here. We did seven or eight dates last year, we're doing one show in England and one show in France.
"Listen, we don't wanna cram this down people's throats., we don't wanna sort of overstay the welcome, and we don't know what kind of response there's gonna be to this in America, so we're starting, obviously, without being disrespectful to the rest of the wonderful country... More...
The Big Four Announces Only U.S. Date
It has been announced that the U.S. version of the Big Four festival will be taking place on April 23 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California (the same spot where the Coachella Festival takes place the weekend before). According to postings made here on Facebook and on several other online media outlets the highly anticipated festival, which made numerous appearances throughout Europe, will be the one and only "Big Four" event held in the United States, contradicting earlier reports of a full U.S. "Big Four" tour. The Most Metal Christmas Light Shows
Ever since the amazing display of Christmas lights set to Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Wizards In Winter" that was so popular it was even used for a Miller Lite beer commercial, setting your lights to music has become more popular despite the need for technical know-how to pull it off. One might think that these displays are largely dominated by Trans-Siberian Orchestra songs - and they'd be right - but there are some people that are metal enough to have the balls to set them to heavier songs, making putting together this list worth the effort and sharing. So here is our top metal Christmas lights list, pulled from the Interwebs:
11. Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
Good song choice, but the light show could use a little more work. Don't worry, we're just getting warmed up here...

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has posted the following comment concerning the forthcoming "Big Four" concerts set to take place at the 2011 Sonisphere festivals.

The vibe within the bands was more than anyone had anticipated and the vibe with the fans was so next level, it completely blew our minds... there was no way this should not happen again!!!"
Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth have all announced that they will be performing at both the U.K. and France editions of the festival. More information on the U.K. gig can be found here , while the "Big Four" will be appearing in Amnéville, France on Saturday, July 9, 2011.

Metallica Explains "Baby Kicker" Video
Metallica has posted the following message explaining the infamous "Baby Kicker" video:
"In the whacky world of rock'n'roll, sometimes stuff happens which looks even weirder than it really is! And with context being vital in these situations, we just wanted to address something which happened on the tour the other night regarding a large beachball, a band member's foot and a little girl. Some of you will have seen on youtube (or read in some reports) that Kirk knocked a small child offstage by kicking a beachball at her. That little lady is the daughter of the stage manager and dressing coordinator, who are fortunate to travel as a family on this tour. She was thoroughly enjoying watching the beachballs drop from the rafters, Kirk was thoroughly enjoying kicking the beachballs off the stage and back into the crowd as has been done every night on the tour, and neither of them saw the other. The poor wee one happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. She wasn't hurt. She didn't go 'flying several feet into the audience.' And Kirk and she remain good buddies. It's very cool that everyone showed concern and support though, so we just wanted to say "it's all good" and thanks for asking."

Kirk Hammet, Baby Kicker
A video of Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett accidently kicking a beach ball into a baby at a recent show has been circulating around the Internet. Metallica To Play Rock In Rio 2011
Metallica has issued the following announcement about performing at next year's edition of the Rock in Rio festival:
"We know it’s pretty nutty to announce a show almost a year in advance...certainly not something we’ve ever done before! However, when we were asked to headline the original Rock in Rio, the one actually in Rio de Janeiro (!!), we just couldn’t say 'no.' After playing at other Rock in Rio festivals in Lisbon and Madrid years past, it seemed like it would make for a fun break from whatever (??!!) we might be doing a year from now.
"So we hope you’ll dig up a 2011 calendar and mark off September 25, 2011 for a date with ‘Tallica in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tickets go on sale on November 19th, 2010 only at the Rock in Rio official website. Other points of sale will be available only after July, 1, 2011."

Adam Lambert Covers Metallica, Video Available
Pop artists seem to love covering metal's classic tracks. Celine Dion, Shakira and Madonna have done it and now you can add Adam Lambert (American Idol season 8 runner-up) to that list. During an October 17, 2010 tour stop in Auckland, New Zealand Adam Lambert busted out Metallica's biggest hit "Enter Sandman." Surprisingly, the crowd knew the words. You can view the video below:

Metallica Playing "Black Ops" Release Show
Metallica has issued the following announcement about playing a release show for the "Call of Duty: Black Ops" video game:
"Our friends over at Activision, the fine folks who bring you the 'Guitar Hero' games, noticed a small hole in the Metalli-tour schedule in between Australian dates and rang us up to invite us to the launch of their next 'Call of Duty' game, 'Black Ops.' One thing led to another and next thing we know, we're playing at the party! Kinda like that top secret (yeah, right!) show we did in Austin at the South By Southwest Music Festival when our 'Guitar Hero' game was released in March of 2009.
"The end result is that on this Thursday, November 4, we'll be in Santa Monica, CA rockin' at the Santa Monica airport, Hangar 8. In addition to celebrating the release of 'Call of Duty: Black Ops,' the event will raise funds for The Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit organization that helps soldiers transition to civilian life and assists them in establishing jobs and careers. Tickets will not go on sale, but we have a limited number of passes for Fan Club members to attend. If you're a Met Club member and will be in the L.A. area in a few days, head over to this location to find out how you can win a pair of tickets.
"A big thanks to the Activision staff for inviting us as we sneak one more show in before the World Magnetic tour ends in Australia."
