Absent death metal vocals or not, I can't wait for this album and tour w/Katatonia.

The weather should be reasonable by 9/27 and "Heritage" will have been out for a week so I will have had time to at least partially digest the album.

Giddy, giddy, giddy.

Agreed RM?

I haven't seen Opeth live since 2003! Even then they were amazing, but I'm sure they have only improved live, and certainly their music has grown into something much more complex and interesting.

I have a feeling this album alongside Steven Wilson's second solo album and the new Mastodon will consume ears this entire fall.

"Grace for Drowning" ties with "Heritage" for most anticipated album of the year and "The Hunter" will no doubt be the Mastodon fix I've needed so desperately...

Just a hunch based on 'Black Tongue' ... but I think "The Hunter" will be more in the vain of "Blood Mountain" and even "Leviathan" rather than "Crack the Skye".

Meanwhile, 'Remainder the Black Dog' is gorgeous and probably only scratches the surface of "Grace for Drowning". The album is an enigma and will probably be the most sophisticated thing from Wilson in some time.

I've longed for a behemoth (legitimate) double album from Wilson for ages... "Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun" being the last release that could genuinely be called such a thing though it was not billed as such.

"Remainder the Black Dog" is great. It's dark, jazzy, complex, intense and beautiful all at the same time. Plus it features Steve Hackett! Wilson has said in a recent interview that he is more proud of this double album than anything he has ever created...and he has created a lot!

Regarding Mastodon, I think their past four albums were great in their own right. Each album sounds different, and they cover the range of Mastodon. Now that Mastodon has reached the top I hope they use their first four albums as a base to create more great music. I agree with you that "Black Tounge" sounds like a mix of the old albums. I'm convinced that if Mastodon balance the heavy and aggression of their first two albums with the progressive and technical aspects of the last two they could produce a monster album that fans would talk about and remember for a long time. Perhaps "The Hunter" will be that album.

Mike likes "Music from the Elder", too? Screw the critics, I knew I was cool ;)
