Judas Priest Guitarist K.K. Downing Retires From The Band

Band Photo: Judas Priest (?)
British heavy metal icons Judas Priest have announced that KK Downing, one of the founding members of the band, has decided to retire from the group and as a result, will not be taking part in the group's forthcoming Epitath tour. A press release from the band reads as follows:
"It is with regret that Judas Priest announce that K.K. Downing has formally retired from the band and will therefore not be joining them on their forthcoming Epitaph Tour. The band respect his decision and naturally all wish him well.
"Having thought long and hard about how to proceed, Rob, Glenn, Ian and Scott uninimously agreed that they should go ahead with the tour and not let the fans down around the world.
"Fate also stepped in and delivered the perfect replacement - 31 year old British guitarist Richie Faulkner - he has blended into the band perfectly and is a great talent who is going to set the stage on fire!
"The Epitath tour will include songs from every Judas Priest album and also tracks they have never performed on stage, plus all the old favourites!
"With a new album due to be released next year, the Metal Gods are preparing to tour the planet once more - Heavy metal at it's best with lasers, lights, bikes and hellfire! It's a show not to be missed!"

Now I'm really glad I saw them in '09......this is truly shocking news......can't imagine Priest without K.K......and anyone else replacing him, IMO, is a let down to the fans......why couldn't he just do this last show and be done with it......is there more to the story....Hmmm????

This isn't news I wanted to wake up and read! Holy sh**! One of my all time favorite bands ! Tipton @ Downing were the template for dual guitarists in the early 80s. Was hoping to see these metal gods for one more go around before they hung it up for good. No I'm really kicking myself for not seeing em do British Steel in its entirety a couple of years ago!

hmm... halford's continuing his career after this... and you don't go and see priest on their last ever tour to see ian hill and scott travis, you go to see halford, downing and tipton... and i can see halford another time... so i just lost half my reason to go see them.

i wish this was an april fool's day joke. i'm not concerned about the live shows, because i am not going to be seeing them live. my big concern is whether kk downing will be playing on the new studio album. if he's not it just won't be the same at all for me. i'd hate to think nostradamus was their true epitaph.

fking finally! about time he realised the pension would support him.. he was definetely on the way out, if he was ever truly in. one of the most overrated bands and guitarists. This is a fine example of how disloyal these 'metal' band members are. who cares.
and why would anyone see them when the almighty AVENGED SEVENFOLD are headlining summer slaughter? true metal at its exceeding brilliance, which priest failed to create. and im pretty sure syn gates ( <3 ) hasnt just turned his back on this band like this old-timer. true metal is loyal. this guy was not. work it out. judas priest sucked, suck, and will continue to suck.

Anyway, this is almost more upsetting then hearing their breakup news. Like others, I'm also happy I saw 'em back in 09. That show was amazing. I always thought Downing was such a great guitarist. If anyone has the anniversary edition of British Steel with the live dvd on it, he rips up the guitar on Victim of Changes. I teared up watch that epic solo he did.
This is my favorite band of all time and it's really upsetting being around to witness their final world tour. I'm happy to say I was alive at this time to see them put out some amazing music though.

I really hope this new guitarist they've got can deliver. If they like him though he must be good.

and as for the fa**ot fat-sh** trolls saying the pinnacle and pioneers of modern rock/metal sucks, well all i can say is its time to come out of your cavefrom the stone age of music and be swept away by the current metal agethat bands such as sevenfold are leading. true metal is only beginning to be discovered, and i wholeheartedly embrace the dawn of true metal as it has been evolving over the last ten years or so.

also, age discrimination is a fail of an argument and yet again portrays your stupidity. you say im faceless and anonymous then imagine that you know my age demographic? well you contradict yourself. maybe forumming isnt your kinda thing. but thats ok, some of us just fail at things.

On the topic, there definitely must be something wrong. It's really difficult to understand why K.K. would walk out with shows booked when Judas Priest have announced their retirement anyway. Seems very odd. Something's off here.
58. writes:
Does seem odd giving that they announce a replacement at the same time as his leaving the band. Could be health. I mean he's gotta be 60 to 62. Will be strange seeing them without KK but it was also strange seeing them without Halford in 98. Hey Rychemm how was Maiden in Florida? Alright.....I'm gonna put my say into this because this is fvckin' ridiculous. I like to think I'm pretty well versed in all kinds of music, and I firmly believe that while TMF is attempting to either troll, or actually make a point, dude doesn't know what the fvck he's talkin' about.
First off, there is no TRUE METAL....... Saying that is retarded. I don't know why everyone keeps saying that.
Priest is metal, so is Avenged Sevenfold, so is Cannibal Corpse, so is Beneath The Sky, and The Human Abstract and Slipknot etc. It can keep going. All those bands are metal. I see no true metal band in that list.....I just see a bunch of metal bands with different sub-genres. It's all real, and it's all true. You can be a metal band and just suck massive d!ck, but you're still metal so what's the fvckin' problem.
Alright I'm gonna say this right now, Avenged Sevenfold is a great fvckin' band. If they were bad their newest video wouldn't have 14 million views....... They're a California modern metal band. It's like a newer version of Metallica in a way considering they have influences from them. I don't really like M Shadows vocals but the band is amazing. The Rev was a phenomenal drummer and he was influenced by that machine Mike Portnoy who was great on their new album, you can't beat that ya know? And Synyster Gates knows his way around a 6 string.
I don't know why everyone is talkin' about scene sh!t bein' related to A7X. You wanna talk scene listen to Black Veil Brides that's as scene as it gets.
Ok enough of that, Anyway if KK Downing is the founder of the band, then he can choose to leave whenever the hell he wants.
He's 59 R10 so yes health might have something to do with it. Could be family problems. Or maybe he just honestly doesn't wanna do it anymore. And after more then 30 years of playing with Priest I can understand that.
But the whole loyalty thing is absolute nonsense. He was in the band he started for almost 40 YEARS!!!! If that's not loyalty I might as well go shoot up a walmart right now because the world has gone to sh!t.
To close this, I love all types of metal. Judas Priest is without any hesitation my all time favorite band and I'll always stick by them no matter what going on with the band. I'm still lookin' forward to the world tour and I'm still lookin' foward to the next album. Hail fvckin' Priest............

66. writes:
Quite a long winded rant ZMA. But I did read it all. You make some decent points about metals so many sub genres. I Tend to like a little from each of them. Not sure which one A7X falls under. I have noticed that most people who love A7X who comment on this site tend to make bogus and false statements of their superiority;and tend to be defensive@hostile about it. Not many younger fans of metal will ever get Priest;they've had a 40 year career. But they are pioneers and that should be respected
67. writes:
brand It's not a matter of a opinion it's an absolute fact. They are a metal band.
I'm not tryin' to argue or nothin', but like, they started out as a metalcore band with heavier screaming and slowly changed to a more modern heavy metal style during their career. I mean he's even gone back to that sort of style of singing on their new release. But in certain ways they've always kinda stuck towards that metalcore style and over the years went more melodic. They've won multiple awards at the Revolver Golden Gods Award shows as well as headlining and they've played mainstage Ozzfest alongside Disturbed and Hatebreed.
I've never really put a connection between scene kids and AX7. But that's only because I don't give a sh!t about scene kids. But I guess they're giving them a bad rep because of it.
Anyway I think those are some pretty hard facts that proves that they are definitely a metal band. Like I said I'm not trying to make this into a big argument this is just all the stuff I've seen about this band over the years and they've always been connected to the metal scene whenever I've seen them. I guess it's honestly whatever though. I still like 'em heh heh.
zeplica I wish I could've seen Priests first US tour. That must've been amazing. I totally hope he enjoys his retirement. I really think he deserves it. He's been performing for crowds for so long. This is definitely well deserved.
68. writes:
Yea R10 that whole thing just irked the hell outta me I guess. I know AX7 fall under some category of metal like I just said but eh.
I like them, but I'm not like those d!cks who talk about AX7 like it's the greatest thing in the world. They're just a good band, that's it. I only get hostile when facts are messed up.....but that would be for anything. Or if someone talks sh!t about Priest heh heh.
I don't try and get into sh!t like this unless I have an actual fair amount of knowledge. It's just good that the regulars here including yourself R10 have a vast about of knowledge, so the discussions are really interesting.
69. writes:
"They've won multiple awards at the Revolver Golden Gods Award shows as well as headlining and they've played mainstage Ozzfest alongside Disturbed and Hatebreed."
golden gods awards are pathetic overall....mainstage ozzfest doesnt mean anything except a band name to get the kiddies and their money in there. doesnt make them supergods!! as you stated, im not trying to argue either. just voicing different viewpoints other than yours.
70. writes:
Yea but at least someone's trying to have a decent metal award show in the U.S. I think it's a pretty good. Could be way better though.
I don't really look at it that way. I've always thought Ozzfest was a great show. The lineups never seem to disappoint. But yea I don't think they're supergods at all.
Well everyone's entitled to their own viewpoints.
I guess it's really whatever.
71. writes:
not saying ozzfest sucks, as i have been to 3. was just sayin that mainstage bands are just the big names to get most of the people there. stage 2 is always better action, but mainstage is good too!! it just needs to get back to its roots in terms of bands booked! it went from really respectable to laughable some years!!
72. writes:
Oh yea I definitely agree. Second stage is always insane. I didn't really like last years lineup on main stage. Motley Crue were good, but they bore me after a while, and I'm not a huge Nonpoint fan. Devildriver was great, and Halford's band was tighter then ever best band on main stage for me. Ozzy gave a good performance also.
Out of all the best on second stage last year, Kataklysm absolutely killed it. At least on that show they did. Their set was great, and their mix through the P.A. was perfect. After Kataklysm, Kingdom Of Sorrow came out and fvcked the speakers up because they were turned up way too loud and it never got better after they left. It ruined Drowning Pool and Black Label Society because of that.

It ain't real, or true, or genuine, or of any redeeming quality WHATSOEVER with regard to the context and philosophy of what is METAL music and culture
The 'musicians' themselves are overrated pop icons, the 'awards' they win are given out by a capitalist charade entity seeking to fabricate an illusion of relevence and authority by means of attempting to identify itself as METAL via association with the proven Fathers of the heavy metal genre, the legacies of whom are proven and undeniable in ALL of music (even if their current material is crap); and by association with contemporary, thinly guised pop acts that exploit the above mentioned 'metal cliches' within their music's general mass-appeal paradigm...it is an ingenious sales pitch that 'validates' both the Charade itself and the millions of idiots foolish enough to subscribe to it
Nothin but an insidious marketing strategy that makes a marionette out of any and all whom would give it ANY merit...in short, a JOKE, a mockery---and one that I and my METAL brethren certainly do not appreciate
Also, I don't really care what the others in the Vaggie7-UpPopfold are or aren't capable of, but I will tell you that their 'vocalist' ain't even a two-bit hack...nah, Shadow Boxer is of bottom-of-the-slag-heap ability, and REALLY and TRULY has absolutley NO business being behind a microphone...in ANY capacity. He's even got the medical records to prove it to those who can't hear it with their own damn ears

Alright I'm back.
I don't know why this has to be so freakin' complicated and why this thread has gone so far outta wack.
hellrat I totally loved your rant about AX7 good stuff. But literally it's just a bunch of friends from California that decided they wanted to be in a band and get big. And they did get big so more power to them, at least some of them can play and play well at that. I really could give a sh!t less what awards they've won and where they've play really. They're just another band.
This thread only went off the beaten path because of TMF and his retarded views towards both bands, and metal in general. Well that and the fact that everyone including myself fed the troll. I guess I'm still feeding.
But anyway to say Slipknot were the first legendary metal band is ridiculous. That bands been dragged through more sh!t then Charlie Sheen.
And disloyalty? 40 motherfvckin' years yo!! The guy played consistently in the band HE CREATED for 40 years with the core lineup staying mostly the same with the exception of drummers being replaced. Which is understandable because drumming is a hard job.
When I see Corey Taylor with a six octave vocal range then I'll agree with that.
Judas Priest mastered the duel lead guitar style they've been best known for. As the times have changed they've always stepped up their game. When the glam movement hit big, they answered with Turbo. And when they thrash and death metal movement hit big they answered with Painkiller. Back when they reunited they proved they still had what it takes with Angel Of Retribution.
You need to respect your elders dude. Without Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Slipknot or AX7 might not be around.
I know wikipedia isn't exactly the best place to get truly accurate info from but literally on Slipknot's page in the first sentence in their style section it says this:
"Slipknot draw influence from an array of styles and bands, most notably including hard rock and heavy metal bands such as Kiss, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest, Korn, Metallica, White Zombie, Led Zeppelin and Beastie Boys."
I appreciate the old so I can appreciate the new. Metal is stronger then it's ever been, but it wouldn't be possible without the founding fathers of this amazing genre that we're all here for.
But really I've said all this sh!t and it's not gonna register. This troll thread will continue onward regardless.
I'm happy to know that at least regs like HR, R10 and branded will take in what I have to say and come back with something worth reading.
