Saxon To Release Special Anniversary Single
British heavy metal legends Saxon has revealed that they will be releasing their classic song "747 (Strangers In The Night)" this year to celebrate the bands 30th anniversary. A post from frontman Biff Byford reads as follows:
"Just a few more words from the road; sat in Berlin having a few wines with Doug, Thomas and Ulf (Herman The German). Tour is going fantastic. Off to Eastern Europe tomorrow. Just a bit more juicy news, as you know we have just shot the first ever Heavy metal 3D video of 'Battalions Of Steel'. It is also our 30th anniversary this year, so SPV is going to release '747 (Strangers In The Night)' as a commemorative single, included in the package will be the video of 'Battalions' and the 3D glasses."

Definitely true Godlike. I haven't heard the new Saxon album yet but as soon as I get some cash that's what it's going on. Jesus Christ Saxon rule so hard haha! Have you got the Saxon Chronicles DVD? The one that's done like a book. That's fantastic, pick that up if you don't own it.

Oz - I do own that Saxon DVD... It is quite excellent indeed \m/
When I seen them the first time, it was their Denim and Leather tour...
Seen em again a year orso later on the Strong Arm of the Law tour.. That show was excellent..!! Biff was throwing Saxon posters out into the crowd and I was lucky enough to get ahold of one:)
And at the end of the show Graham Oliver took off his Saxon "Denim and Leather" baseball cap and threw it into the crowd.. It landed in the hands of my older brother..!!
15. writes:
Hahaha....., Thanks Oz..!!
Yeah, Im a legend alright... A legend in my own mind ;-)
I agree that Biff has always looked a bit old.... even before his hair turned gray..!!
All this talk about Saxon... Im gonna have to pull up some Youtube videos in another window and jam to some Saxon..!!
Bg1 - So, being a frontman... Do you agree with my statement in post #8.?

Yeah, Wendy O, was a bit freaky and nasty ... hahahha .!! Damn she had a helluva body... but she was so f^ckin ugly ;-)
My life as a metalhead started when I was a kid, listening to music that my oldest brother was playing... He was a major metal fan in the 70s... He seen Kiss in 1975..!!
Back in those days, Kiss was the coolest thing around... the stage shows, the makeup... It was all so different... Alot of kids nowadays dont understand how strange that was for the time..!?

Isnt it strange that two of the best three man bands came out of Canada..?? Rush and Triumph..!!
Hell, Ive always been a Ted Nugent fan too... Seen him a few times over the years... He always puts on a great show..!!
Do you recall a German band from the early 80s named Bullet..? I just got a copy of the album

Saxon is simply amazing....I have almost all of their albums. I knew about their well known classics, like Princess in the Night, Denim and Leather, however, I heard Crusader and Broken Heroes and have followed Saxon every since...awe inspiring work. The lyrics are so good. They really know how to rock, too. I was blown away by the INNER SANCTUM, and, yes Saxon does not get the recognition they so rightly deserve. I was rather lucky that I met this band a long time ago, and they are great guys. It is so cool that they keep pushing forward like Motorhead. Truly classic metal artists!
45. writes:
damn...
Sometimes i wish I was in my 40's or 50's now, so I could have been there when all that stuff was getting started. Ozzy, Dio, Saxon, metallica, Accept, maiden...I love the old guard.
But then I remeber that I listen to Dillinger Escape Plan and Lamb of God, and I realize that I'm going to have my own bands to rant about when I'm 45. :)

That DVD is a great purchase... Lots of excellent tunes and concert footage on there \m/
Although, Ive never heard a Saxon song that I didnt like..!
Comments from young metal dudes..? Sadly, Im afraid that alot of young metalheads have never heard Saxon... maybe heard of them... But dont own any of their music.? Which is just a damn shame if ya ask me..!!

Well - I am 38, so I don't consider myself young anymore. I agree, more young people should give SAXON a listen, and hear what real metal sounds like(with passion). Their lyrics are like poetry, and there are (arguably) very few bands left who stay consistently great...like Saxon. Saxon is like a metal juggernaut, and they just keep rolling over the competition. Too bad- barely anyone knows about them, especially kids now a days. I mean -this is a band who can tear your head off with metal intensity, heavy a hell at one point, and then write another song that may more you to tears...simply amazing! Ok enough of my fanboy enthusiasm...lol.
70. writes:
f*** me i posted to fast
my thought about the young ones is they download to much so they only find newer stuff and do not look for older music i think
they dont go to the music store anymore and talk to the owner about cool metal music
they need education about metal
by the way riot good band only got fire down under
need to check the newer stuff out
o yeah i dont down load i buy a cd

A number of years ago, I met a dude online, that has over 5000 cds... I was buying copies from him for $2-$3..?? There was a couple times that I bought 25-30 CDs at a time... Thats just nuts, trying to figure out what to listen to first..??
wilco - yeah, I used to hang around my local record story... wearing Denim and Leather ;-)
I learned SO much from the early years of MTV too... back when they were playing all of this killer NWOBHM music... Seems like I found a new band every other week..?
Bg1 - Hopefully you enjoyed an afternoon of some Saxon music eh..?

did someone say "young metal dude?" But I prefer the term " little whipper-snapper" if you guys dont mind. ;D lol just kidding I would punch the first elderly person to call me that lol.
I'm so busy looking up new bands, i rarely have time to look up old stuff, but when I say that, i mean the obscre stuff like Trouble.(luckily, someone on this site reccomended them to me) Stuff like Saxon I hold in my collection with Led Zepp, the Deep Purple, Maiden, and, well, Queen haha. the good ol stuff you cant ignore if you have good taste in music.
I'm always lookin for new bands, or at least new to me. Just this past month I've found a new love in bands like Sodom(80's german thrash), Strapping young lad(whatever you call them, disbanded for three years now...), and Death, whom we all kinow started back in the 80's. Then again, I find my bands that are up and coming NOW, like Origin, or Brain Drill, or the new Lamb of God album. I just keep chuggin along for anything that sounds awesome to me, and Saxon was one of those things. come to think of it, I have to go back through my old collections of music I have saved up and find my Saxon. I dont even know what songs I have, since I have soooo much music, its hard to remember things you havent heard in a while.
Godlike, if you can get past the screaming vocals(I know you can, you listen to Motograter and Mudvayne, if I remember correctly? lol) then the new Lamb of God is worth a check out. Some of the solo's on that album hit me like I havent been hit since I listened to Deicide or Rhandy Rhoads for the first time. good stuff.

^we used to have a metal record stoer down here, and I used to talk tot he guy about metal, thats how I found out about Obituary, Sepultura, and Krisiun, by talkin to that guy. Unfortunately, because the shop was so far a away, and it was in a hard to find area, nobody went there, and it shut down and went out of business. All the other record stores down here are people who dont care about metal, or if they do, they listen to that po-screamo-emo garbage. As Soon a sI start asking if they have a certain metal cd I want, they think I give a crap about Aiden or Avenged Sevenfag. It's annoying. :P
81. writes:
"Back in the day" when I used to hang out in the record store, musicians ran the shop. It was the only job they could get with their permed mullets, rotten teeth and cheap tattoos. I hung out with those guys everyday after school and all day on weekends. The topic of the day was usually new bands like Anthrax, Metallica, Exodus, ManOWar, Anvil, Saxon, Mercyful Fate, Slayer and everything that was "underground" during that era. On Saturday's we would close the place down and play guitar through the store system while people in the mall would stand and stare (probably because it was the only shop in the mall closed at 6:30 at night). It was some of the best days of my life. It wasn't long after that that I hooked up with a guitarrist from the shop and started a band with him. From that day forward, metal has been a main staple of my existence. A part of my very soul. The rest... Fvcking history people.

Have any of you guys heard Saxon's new album?? I have it, and it is awfully good. This is such a great discussion..I wish saxon knew what die-hard fans they have(i.e. we metalheads). Saxon is just great listening, and it always bring me back to the first time I heard them. The 80's have come and gone, but I will always have great memories...hell..I even have some vague memories about the late 70s.

one thing i found out i do hang out with lots of bikers
if you were a shirt from bls they think its another bike club many tiems had to rell them no bro its a band
do think its funny sh**

wilco - LOL ... Yeah, I can see where the BLS shirts etc... can be confused for biker clothing..!
I would assume that it was done for that reason..?!
Ive been a fan of Zakk Wylde since the release of Pride and Glory.... Ive never really been much of an Ozzy fan after Randy Rhoades died... Yeah, he has had some great guitar players... but I like those guitar players with their own bands...
For example, Jake E Lee sounded ALOT better in Badlands, than with Ozzy..!
Which is exactly why I enjoy listening to BLS more so than when Zakk is playing for Ozzy \m/
Saxon - Wheels of Steel \m/
94. writes:
^it's funny, me and my dad were just having a similar conversation about Ozzy and his guitar players....
Basically, Ozzy helped people to notice them, because he himself was so famous, and he always picked great guitar players that nobody had noticed before to be with his band...
On the flip side, Ozzy being Ozzy, and it being HIS band and all, and the fact that they were making HIS music, and the guitarist was just supposed to contribute to it, they couldnt show off as much, and were WAAAY more limited in their guitar playing by this, hence, why some people, like godlike (LIKE godLIKE lol sorry) enjoy BLS more than Zakk with Ozzy, and alot of people probably feel the same way about all of Ozzy's other guitarists and their prospective bands.
So they got famous for the stuff they were able to show off with when they were with Ozzy, but they could have shown off SOOOO much more, if you think about it....
Which is actually kinda scary...Could you imagine how much crazier Mr.Crowley or Crazy train could have been if the guitarist was SHOWING off? haha

FAN - very well spoken, my young friend..!
Yeah, Ozzy has always found incredible guitarists to work with... Not unlike Ronnie James Dio over the years, has worked with some incredible axe slingers too... Vivian Campbell, Craig Goldie, and even Rowan Robertson (who at 16 yrs old, was picked over 100s of others..! )

well you have to see ozzy is just a side project for zakk i do think and thats were he makes his money pride and joy is hard to get used to but awsome guitar work on there
jake e lee yeah great player indeed in badlands he belongs
dont here from him so much any more
like jake e lee when he did play in ozzy ozzy told him what to do
but i do think zakk got lots of freedom on his guitar he can do what ever he likes
i think
thats the reason he is still around in ozzy
