Metallica's latest album, "Death Magnetic," picked up four Grammy nominations, has official won "Best Recording Package." "My Apocalypse" also won for "Best Metal Performance."
Additionally, Rick Rubin won the Producer of the Year Grammy. In addition to working with Metallica on "Death Magnetic," Rick produced Neil Diamond, Dancing For The Death Of An Imaginary Enemy, Jakob Dylan, and Weezer.

clearly metallica is the gayest band ever and now they have another grammy to dildo themselves with. Bands that actually write brilliant and terrifying music go unoticed, but im sure its the same with any genre the mainstream crap gets awarded and the really good stuff goes unoticed. i mean clearly metallica lost its magic when they started playing cause there f***ing terrible. i think they should be set on fire for being so gay. f*** gaytallica

This award is bull****, My apocalypse sucks, it is probably the worst song I have ever heard in my life. Furthermore the recording in the cd was very poorly done. Now I even am an avid Metallica fan, but the new stuff has lost its luster, if you want to put it that way. I would have to say, did not deserve a grammy, but the Cd itself was a step in the right direction... Idk congrats? i guess?

Hahahahaha nice Branded. Meh, I still like Metallica even though they HAVE sold out (but I will never buy any of their sh**, I will always download it just like every other music I get, unless I LOVE the album). I still think that Kirk shreds like no other! No matter what they do they won't be able to make me stop liking them....UNLESS they make more albums like St. Anger and the Load Reload bullsh**. I think a lot of you would go back to liking Metallica if they reproduced their old sh**. I don't like that idea lol, that means they won't be original and that is what bands these days need to do instead of make their influences their ACTUAL sound if you know what I mean. Like all of these Technical Black Metal bands copying Necrophagist and bands like that.
idk i sorta liked the album. definitely better than stanger. that being said, the production quality sucked compared to modern standards. Trivium definitely deserved both those awards even if they werent nominated.
one last thing.
The people that work for the grammy's are completely ignorant of metal. When lamb of god went to claim their trophy, the people there didn't even know that the singer didnt bother to show up.

The Grammy's will never be a Metal friendly environment. The very fact that Metallica has been considered for a Grammy is due to a watered down sound and more mainstream appeal. It seems no matter how popular or financially prevalent a metal band gets, they will never truly be recognized by these award groups, or the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame for that matter. Bands like Metallica get the recognition BY becoming a radio or MTV commodity.
And the above post is correct. These groups will always be ignorant of Metal. But think about it, when has Metal ever been about mainstream acceptance or popular opinion? Do we want our beloved bands selling us Doritos or on the boxes of breakfast cereals? If we did then no one would ever use the term "sold out". Just my 2 cents.

Forget Metallica winning a grammy, that's like any of you winning a boxing match against a retarded kid. It's an fvcking Grammy!!!!! We were not even represented on primetime television and we like it that way. Yes there are a lot of great metal bands and guess what, no one but those of us who know how much better music is when you actually write it and play it, wants to see it. I hate all country more than Branded hates Metallica, but i do love Lil' Wayne's album cause he tells the same truth that many great metal bands do just in a completely different genre. Congrats to Metallica but even as much as I have always loved them, someone else could have won this award.

I wrote a post earlier today but it seems it didn't go through - in any case, Netromancer pretty much has it all covered. Some other points to add to this though,
The ridiculous nature of the Grammy's versus metal has always been highlighted by Metallica. In the very first metal grammy given out - Metallia's landmark ...AJFA, much touted to win, was beaten by Jethro Tull (good, but not AJFA good). Next they won a Grammy for St Anger. Now Rick Rubin wins best producer, despite having taking part in making the most controversial and critisized production ever! Well done Grammys, you truly have no soul.
bbristowe also made a good point - metal is a very special genre, one in which massive record sales are almost always a sign of music disliked by the metal community. Metal has different scales on which we weigh, which is the sole reason why the Grammys will always be at best a nice congrats for a good band, and at worst a slap in the face to all true metalheads. Hey,. at least they picked the best song on the album.

Well, probably because they made RTL in the first place and it rocked. So naturally, we will compare it to when they were awesome.
As for timj37's post. Well their are so many things I could say to that. "One Chord Thoughtless Songs" Please see Opeth. Metallica doesn't have any sh** left on their boot heals because it's smeared all over their publicity and cd's. I'd love for them to make more music but seriously. Kirk can't play anymore, James is old, Lars still sucks. The bass player is the only one with any kick left in him.

i dont think getting old is the reason that most people hate tallica here.... james is old but didnt you hear their album there are many good riffss in it that james wrote them....i think you cant deny the fact that james is one of the best guitar players out there and yes his voice is not good anymore ....."kirk cant play anymore????" you can listen to judas kiss solo or even MA solo maybe that can change your mind( i accept the fact that he is overrated).... i think DM is a mediocre album nothing more nothing less but i think it is a step forward..... and i agree lars sucks balls he's never been a good drummer ... he cant even play "One" properly now after all these years and performances.....

I look forward to every album put out by these 5 bands. I've quit looking forward to a Metallica album since about 1993. The sad part is that Metallica was sitting on top of this list until about 1993.
The reason why we're critical of Metallica is that they quit metal. And not so much that they quit metal, but that they kept claiming NOT to have done so the entire time. They are deserving of all the money and all of the scorn at the same time.
I hope they're sitting on the couch polishing their Grammys.

I think we've all known that The Best Metal Award at the Grammy's is about as important as these damn "I Love..." reality TV shows. :P
Honestly, Death Magnetic was better than St. Anger, but Metallica is still absolutely horrible. Sometimes, I can't even stand to listen to Ride The Lightning and And Justice For All, because I start to think about how bad they are now.
This must have been a slow year for Metal. I'll agree that "Death Magnetic," was a return to form for these guys, but after putting out turds back to back for the past ten years anything heavier would sound great at this point. This is also a good career move for Rick Ruben. Ricky Boy, you want an award every year? You should just take Bob Rock's sloppy seconds from now on.

I'm not going to talk bad about any band. Insults and smack talk arent my style. I gave Death Magnetic about 15-20 listens. I WANTED to like it. It's not as bad as their last 3 albums, but there is alot of music released in the past 2 years or so that blows it away. I just wasn't impressed. The thing here is, Tallica fan, you like the album. That's great and I repect your opinion. But to say that a differing opinion is uneducated makes no sense. I listen to alot of music, and I count Metallica's first 4 albums as some of the best metal ever made. I dislike Metallica these days because their change in form went too drastically toward commercially accepted hard-rock. As of the past few years they have more in common with bands like Nickel Back or Creed than with the thrash and speed metal I came to love. In all honesty, because of them. Death Magnetic is a swerve back toward earlier form, but for me, too little, too late. I feel my tatse in metal has grown beyond them. And I have several other bands that I just enjoy more. I actually understand to a degree why they changed, and I wish them luck, though it looks like they really don't need it. Just saying that I don't hate them, or have anything against them. I simply didn't enjoy the latest album. Sometimes a negative opinion is just that, an opinion, and not a social statement on the band. With all due respect.
As for the Grammy's, they mean nothing to the metal community as they are ignorant of the musical style. Congratulations on your little statue.

tallica_fan86, its just i have grown tired of hearing how much metallica means to the metal world, how many bands they have influenced, etc. there are better bands than metallica out there and thats the bottom line. they held the crown and lost it on their own merit. they have done nothing good in music since the black album. im not one of those lil trendy, "lets follow this band now cause every1 says they are so kick ass". metallica is just another turd that i flushed down the toilet yrs ago.

To be honest guys, I don't see why Slipknot didn't win these stupid f***ing awards. Think about it, they put out one of the most publicly accepted albums to date in their band's history. Very few songs on that album were actually "Slipknot Worthy", if you know what I mean. I still loved the album, let's face it, Gehenna was a masterpiece, but still....

Netromancer you must have ears of steel - I probably only listened to Death Magnetic around 5 incomplete times, with a few extra spins of My Apocalypse. Despite that Metallica will always be my favorite band, tied with my namesake.

I'm not going to lie, Cynic. I desperately wanted to like this album. I followed alot of the stories as it was being advertised and really tried to give it a chance. I still don't think it's particularly bad, just not as good as alot of my other favorite bands. That's why I get a bit miffed with the posts that say disliking the band is a trend or uneducated. I worshipped this band as a teenager, and probably wouldn't have sat all those hours practicing guitar and bass if not for them. I'm not all that bitter though. I rarely trash talk them. I just don't buy their albums. I still religiously listen to the first 4 albums. They are pure metal gold :)

I havn't watched the Grammy Awards in quite some time maybe it's because it's all "glamour & show off/polished" and alot of times the music catagory I like most aren't given the same space as w/the other styles of music and allot of time their not even there represented. So to me it's "polished" not saying whose being represented & the music artists/bands that won this year 2009 for their hard earned works in 2008 is not "vital"...'it's just preselected who they want to show more of...'so it gets tiresome to me for almost every yr the "same" music genre artists are picked. So, I stopped watching sometime ago...'just peak every now & then and did not know that it made it's premiere this past Sunday/Feb 7th 2009. With that said I do congratulate METALLICA on their Grammy wins' although most of the post comments here are quite "harsh" toward Metallica hard earned winnings & there's aplenty other master legendary Metal bands that also need to be recognized in that same light. It would be cool if their was a METAL God's Award Show in the USA & hopefully that won't be polished 'cause every music genre needs to be given a mighty "limelight" every now & then. Peaceout!

I love Metallica, I love Amon Amarth, I love Slipknot, I love Opeth (dude that's different metal all together), I am the old school, new school rolled into one. Branded can hate all he wants. I'm sure there is a band he loves that i can't stand, but i will listen to what he has to say. I might find something in his post that I like. Thanks to "Cynic" i discovered "CYNIC". But seriously, because of this site, I've been expanding my metal tastes, because of Cynic, I too have began listening to Cynic, I've heard from various people to check out Brain Drill on here, and I've done so, BoltThrower has made me LOVE Bolt Thrower. And there's many more. I want to thank everyone here, you guys have been so welcoming, and awesome.
On topic, Metallica will always be metal legends, they paved the way for so many bands and I respect them for that, yet I refuse to buy any of their new albums. The first four albums, are masterpieces, some of the best metal albums, albums period, that I own. However, their last few make me cringe. I tried liking Death Magnetic, I really tried, but I guess I can't get over the fact of what they use to be.

I myself have found Pig Destroyer, DEP, Converge, Trouble, Opeth, Brain Drill, Isis, Rumpilstilskin grinder, Leng tch'e, Blind Greed, Mercenary, and I'm sure many other bands, on this website, either through articles or member reccomendation.
oh, and how could I forget "Behold...The Arctopus"? It's takin a bit to get used to it, but the stuff i like so far, I REEEEAAALLLY like. So thank you to all the people who threw their name up in the air at any point. Eventually, curiousity will get the better of me.
Death Magnetic was garbage. It's been taking me around a week so far to put together the song "one" on guitar properly. It took me 30 seconds to learn the opening 3 minutes to the song "Day that never Comes". Simplistic, cheap riffage, the parts where the drumming is good is immediately followed by a sh**storm, his voice and lyrics are horrible. (love is a 4-letter word)
The only good song on the album is My Apocalypse, and that's because both the solo and the lyrics sound like they were stolen from a b-side Slayer song. (All Nightmare long could have been good if they changed the lyrics, and if the song wasnt 8 fvcking minutes long)
God praise Metallica's first four albums. Goddamn their last 4.

Yeah, well Black Sabbath can play Salsa music if they want, that doesn't mean I have to buy it. I support bands too. But when the music is sub-par I don't pay for it. Support for a band might be admirable, but these bands NEED people to tell them when something they put out sucks. They are surrounded by Yes-men. The last thing they need is another ass-kisser. If you lack that honesty, if you are surrounded by people who tell you that you're great no matter what you do, then someone has to step up and tell it like it is.

If someone had been straight with these guys from the get-go they might have put out a great album instead of the one that even they are embarassed about. Support 'em all you want. I'm going to help the music progress by stating my opinion even if it's negative. EVEN if I love the band in question.

I love the "holier than thou" attitude (no pun intended) that so many metal fans bring to this site. Isnt it a matter of taste. Whether you like them or not they inspired more bands that all metal fans listen to than almost every other band you have ever heard of, at least in this new wave of American Metal. I am not a Metallica fan post AJFA, but come on...their earlier material was amazing. So they won a grammy??? Mastodon was up for a grammy last year, does that make them sellouts, or a terrible band? I dont think so. Maybe its that fact that I can go from listening to Psycroptic to Demilic to Discordance Axis, and then maybe throw on some Al Green to chill out to (just an example). It is the nature of the genre tho to have this "my music is better than yours" attitude, but it is getting old. If you feel that way then you should probably go to a bunch of hardcore shows and "destroy the pit" to represent how much better the bands you like are than those of others. I could go on, but Im gonna get off of the soapbox.

they were great...yes they do suck now. but the sh** they just put out is better than a7x, atreyu, bleeding through, or anyone of the million bands that sound exactly the same. thats all im sayinig... these bands that are trying so hard will never attain the level that this washed up group of has beens did on there last record. that is the point. judge them according to them because they are still a better band than almost anything new that comes out now. yeah, i can think of 100 bands that id rather listen to, but i can think of 1000 that id still prefer metallica over. damn, slayer is the only band of there time that inspired heavy music more than metallica and that may only be because they were more edgy....musically, just give them respect. if it wasnt for metallica, pantera, testament, etc. you would never here bands like nevermore, log, shadows fall, or even f***ing killswitch engage for those of you that are fans and i know that that is the majority of this website. if you are older than 18, how can you disrespect metallica??? yeah, new album is sub par but know your f***ing roots.....

So, being someone that liked their first 4 albums, how should I express my opinion on their newer stuff? I know OUR roots as metal fans. Old Metallica is firmly in place there. And yes, Formation of Damnation is much better than Death Magnetic. I think I have an idea of where you're coming from, but my question is this.

I'd have to say that being one of the acts that initially set the bar at it's current level, No, they can't be. They have made some of the music by which they are judged. Their own example sets the criteria. The music they have made over the past few years IS sub-par, and should be named as such. I'm not saying be disrespectful or insulting, just honest. It bothers me as well to see them get the treatment they get at times. I do respect them, but I have to be honest when listening to their more recent releases.
I feel that if they weren't surrounded with so many people in the business who were eager to jump on anything released under the Metallica label we wouldn't be having this conversation. I don't mean fans. Nothing will change the fact that I grew up with a deep love for this band's music, and still regularly play 4 of the best metal albums ever released. But with bands like Opeth, Mastodon, Testament, Machine Head, High on Fire, Lamb of God, Strapping Young Lad, the list literally goes on, they need to step it up if they want to keep up.
Not disrespect and insults, but honest criticism. The radio friendly hard-rock community is their bread and butter now. People who follow Metal know there is better music out there. Sad, but true.
I respect your opinions MetalMayhem, and I hope this doesn't come off as a dispute of your former posts, but rather a discussion between two guys who love a style of music. I am interested in what you have to say. From what I've read and anything you might post after this.

Hahah cute. I agree with " gaytallicasuckshardwieners," In my opinion I've heard better Metal bands that make Metallica look like crap (well it's not like they need it anyway.)
Congrats to Metallica though. While I didn't care for their recent album, I heard Death Magnetic was much better than "Load" and far exceeded the pile of Manure they called "St. Anger."
