Big mike - St Anger was a complete disaster. Songs are too long, structured badly, No solos, No melody unlike AJFA, RTL, MOP. It was slow in pace, no harmonies. And do I have to mention the drum sound.
Cliff introduced them to classical and other musical influences which made metallica more than just a thrash band. There songs had dept imagination and were structured well. Master of Puppets there master piece had everything. Fast pace, melody, cracking solos, great bass sound and heavy at the same time. It influenced loads of bands.
In a nutshell people hate St Anger as Metallica were one of the best metal band of all time. We have to pray for the return of the glory days. They are using Master as there canvas so hopefully Cliff was looking down on them so they can create anohter masterpiece.

I'm not going to let myself get excited about it, but I'm cautiously optimistic after the sound clips. I didn't hate St. Anger though. I thought it was a step up from the Load albums, but still plenty worthy of disappointment. So much revolving around Metallica is based on expectations.

From what i've heard from the brief sound clips doesn't sound bad at all. Sounds like a return to their roots. Could a good Metallica album actually be coming out we'll just have 2 wait and c in September.
P.S. ST.SH%T SUCKED YEAH I SAID IT
Now this "Death Magnetic" has promise

This better be their come back this time. I like Metallica's first 4 albums and a few songs off the black album like where ever I may Roam and the Unforgiven. it must really suck to be the bigest disapointment to Metal In History. after watching some kind of monster they need to stop whining about the sh** music off there down fall albums and WRITE SOME THING HEAVY. Kirk Hammett and Dimebag are my number one Idols on guitar it is a disapoinment that dimebag is dead and that kirk is alive and not taking advantage of that and writting good music instead of sh**.

Chained. . . Unlucky for you then champ. Didnt your mother ever tell you to 'never judge a book by its cover?' Or in this case, a whole album from a thirty second clip off You Tube. . .listen to some of the other sh** first before you pass judgement, you're shooting yourself in the foot in admitting that youve only heard thirty seconds worth.
Every reason to be optimistic that the album will sound amazing. . . Cant wait

I just checked out the sound clip, and I have to say that the new stuff are way, way better than Load, Reload and St. Anger combined! James' voice isn't really what it used to be, though. But hell, the music ought to grab all the attention anyways.
It seems Rick really paved the way for 'Tallica to sound heavy again.

Because people want to jump on the bandwagon I suppose..."
Err, no they hate St. Anger because it was a bad album. I foresee this being a "United Abominations" of an album."
Not only do people think St. Anger is a bad album, but they just call it the "most hideous album" Metallica's ever made or an album "you should not recommend to anyone". It's just too hard to for me to understand why people don't like that album.

ive purchased every metallica album...the most recent album i still have is the black album. A huge reason for their decline is obviously Jaymz voice. and regarding people not liking st. anger...its probably the worst produced album in mainstream music history...its no surprise they changed producers, ive made better sounding demos in a storage unit recording on a clock radio..."get back to your roots by sounding gritty" failed miserably. with their budget they shouldnt sound like a garage band!
42. writes:
I'm not even wasting my time listening to the clips, I have no doubt that this album will suck more than their previous albums!
There is no possible way that they can bring back their original sound... Because of the hype that circulated the Black album back in the day, and all the money they profitted off it, you're all dreaming if you think there is any chance in hell they'll recreate another Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets or ...and Justice for All...
Their sound died with the Black album, if anything their new release will resemble the Black album... GUARANTEED
I'm sorry it turned out this way, as I was a die hard Metallica fan before they released the Black album...

I don't want them to release an album that sounds like it was relevant to Master of Puppets. Music has evolved so much since then, that I would like it to be relevant to today. I don't want it to sound like a band that release an awesome record 20 years ago, and 20 years later, try to make the same record sound relevant.
They need to push the envelope a lot more for this album to live up to any hype. My thoughts are that no matter how good this album will be, it will not live up to its hype.

Very much agree with Cynic on the United Abominations notion. A new take on the old sound, it might even work. In response to Necropolis and ZT's "Why does everybody hate St. Anger anyway?"
No bandwagon here, I'll swear on any family member's grave. I've been a fan since early '87 (first grade).
"St Anger" was not an "evolution".
It was a terrible fall down a tremendous staircase.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion--informed or otherwise, but I ask only that one read the lyrics to the title track of "Master of Puppets" and then do the same with "St. Anger's" title track. Lastly, listen to the songs, if you don't observe degradation: lyrically, instrumentally, structurally and emotionally....Then there truly is no accounting for taste.

I have thought Metallica was garbage since MOP, everything after it is crap. if anyone wants a GREAT album, check out the new Opeth cd or the new Kalmah cd, AMAAAAAZZIIINNGGG!!!! I am NOT looking forward to the new Metallica album, I don't care. Lets talk about METAL, shall we?
48. writes:
If you're not looking forward to any new Metallica stuff, then why the hell do you even bother to write about an entirely different band? No disrespect though; I mean, you could probably give more examples as to why you don't like Metallica since MoP aside from saying Opeth or Kalmah is better.
It's like saying Kobe sucks because he's not Michael.

"I've been a fan since early '87 (first grade)" - Now I feel old :-) Although I wasn't listening to Metallica til about then anyway.
I don't think the music is any worse in St Anger than the Loads though. It was a slap to the face when I first heard Load. Everything that made Metallica great was gone. Not a single double-bass drum that I can remember. Few and crappy/uninspired solos from Kirk. More clean singing and other styles from James. And overall a very watered down feel with no consistent feel to it. Their first single, "Until It Sleeps" was one of the best songs, sounding essentially like a stripped down song from the Black album.
I thought Reload was better if only because it has a consistent feel, but it was still too much rock and not enough metal - lacking all the things that made Metallica great. St Anger was angrier and heavier, but still a disappointment because of so many other shortcomings mentioned here.
I think a new take on their old sound is all we could possibly hope for - best case scenario. Metallica will never be Metallica of old, and those who hope or expect that will forever be disappointed.

Metallica has been my favorite band since I first heard Fight Fire With Fire but St. Anger was a huge disappointment. Like deathbringer I am cautiously optimistic of something good however the vocals ruined any chance of it being great. What I would do for 1988 to be back and the alcohol soaked throat of James Hetfield singing at his best with it, when he actually was a good frontman/vocalist, and Lars was a slightly above mediocre drummer instead of a sh**ty one.

53. writes:
I agree with deathbringer on Load being a bigger letdown--I wept like a b**** when I heard that thing. I even had a Metallica "pod people" theory.
I recall the pre-release hype for St. Anger being: "Return to form" and "more heavy" "faster"...Lots of talk like that.
Instead, reality gave us a "gar(b)age production" album that seemed inspired by The White Stripes and The Strokes...Bands that were a knee jerk reaction to nu-metal...Where are they now?
To add insult to irony--the the music itself was dangerously close to nu-metal. MADNESS!!!!..

For me, St Anger was on cloud 9 compared to Load/Reload. There was NOTHING I liked about either of those albums. St Anger was also a superbly awful album, but still magnificent after L/R. All I can say is the new album WON'T be another Master or Justice, but it WILL be a motherload better than their last release.
Now Playing: Nothing, because my new computer won't play sound for f*** knows what reason :(

i have kept quiet long enough on this thread...
no matter what any1 says, good or bad, millions will buy the cd to see if it is anything like the glory days of this dying band. i watched half of the bonnaroo show and laughed when they were having sound probs, watching the crowd not respond to james, etc...i had a friend who was there and he was 75% dissappointed in their set. they will still get more rich of cd sales and world tour, but this trully signifies the end of metallica!! i will not talk my usual smacksh1t this time.
R.I.P METALLICA
thank god its over!!!!!!

If the new album does get good reviews,I think most people will still say it sucks. Metallica can't satisfy EVERYONE, mind you...
And what's even more funny is how everyone thinks that this album will be Master Of Puppets: Part Two! People, stop making fools of yourselves.
ZT out.

personally ill most likely like st. anger more, just because i really liked it, and im not the biggest into thrash. But that second song was pretty sweet. And it looks like lars is back to just normal beats.. Metallica fans tend to be stupid.. they're an interchanging band just f***ing accept it, and move on. People can like what they want. St. Anger did actually pretty well in sales, although no one would like to admit it. And so did black album.

metallica are great i've been a fan since 2 years ago when i first heard for whom the bell toll on Planet Rock. I then went to amazon.co.uk and bought every single Metallica album, along with Some Kind of Monster and Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos
So, considering I actually like the Black Album, Load, Reload, and (shock horror) St Anger, I think Death Magnetic is gonna blow me away
Although I do think the name is a bit odd, then again maybe they thought Master of Puppets was a bit of an odd name at first...
p.s. why do people hate the black album? it's still nearly thrash - some parts of it are more thrash than AJFA! The only reason I can see is that all the non-Metallica fans say Enter Sandman and Sad But True are their favourite songs, making the album seem mainstream, when really it's those d***head pretenders who are to blame!
p.p.s. hello!

hahhah!!! post 64, very funny.
i cant believe that these old muther fukkers are still making music, but im happy anyways. good for them, i'll be getting it. i really hope thatits better than the last one. i liked Load, even if everybody i know thinks that its bad.
but wait, wont being in the spotlight make them drug conscience again?

67. writes:
this album will be as great as all there other albums. i dont think there was anything wrong with st. anger, its metallica, i dont understand why every1s been baggin them ever since load.i rekon if u dont like there albums & all u wana do is whinge about em, dont listen to em, thou no mater what eny1 says about them ill back em up anytime.to think james went to hell & back to find himself, it was a massive change for any1 & i thought it was a good change.
live on metallica

Whats in a name?...If the thing were called "Baby Horse Skeleton Bleaching in the Sun" I'd still give it a test spin.
I'm worried about the tempos and the lyrics to some extent but I think the band is in a better headspace than they have been since Load. If thats the case, there is hope for at least half this album turning out 'decent'.
Now Playing: Origin - "Antithesis"

Finally. A true believer. Thank you enter daveman, you speak for all of us TRUE fans of Metallica. So St. Anger sounded different, doesn't matter. It's Metallica and if you truly like them, you'll listen to it. So deal with it. I don't care if you hate me or Metallica, I thought that all their albums were good.
oh, and one more thing to piss of you haters out there: LONG LIVE JAMES HETFIELD AND LARS ULRICH!!
