"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Mastodon Drummer Speaks On New Songs

Progressive metal quartet MASTODON is tentatively scheduled to enter the studio in the spring to begin recording its follow-up to 2006's "Blood Mountain". A late 2008 release via Warner Bros. Records is expected.

In a recent interview with UK's Rock Sound magazine, MASTODON drummer Brann Dailor stated about the songwriting process for the group's new album, "It's a long, arduous process. We've got a skeleton for the whole record and these huge chunks of music four of five different segments that don't have a beginning or end yet... We're just basically in the middle of the record, adding stuff, giving it a taste then adding a little more 'pepper' or 'salt.' Once all the ingredients are in there, you have to bake it — which is just playing it over and over again until it feels right. The main goal is to get the songs right so you don't have to think about the time changes — so you can relax with it and play it how it should be played. There's a level of difficulty to our stuff and if you're too wrapped up in trying to remember how many times something goes and the timing for the next riff, you can't examine the song for being a song. So it takes a while."

So far, only one new songtitle has been revealed: "The Ghost of Karilla".

Commented Brann: "I dont want to give the theme away but I think the song title will leave a few people guessing. It's top secret. I can't divulge that information. It's more fun keeping it under wraps, but you can be assured that it's definitely another MASTODON record which is going to further in a couple of different directions and the stuff we've written so far is heavier than I expected."

I've enjoyed the last three records, I am hoping for something more like the first two rather than the last one though.
The last three have been based on elements: Fire, Water, and Earth--in that order....Only leaving air but Dailor has already said in another interview to expect something not of the typical elements....so...What does that leave?
I'm waiting for some samrtass to post a Captain Planet reference at this point.

Blood Mountain - easily one of the best albums of 06, I'd have to disagree with you RM? just because I fall on the metal side, hope they really dive into prog and leave any trace of the hardcore stuff behind. Bottom line they're obviously guys who know how to put songs together. I smugly thought I could give "Capillarian Crest" a go on guitar and was horrendously mistaken, these guys are talented as hell.

Either way (metal or prog) I'm going to snag the new album day of release.

I wasn't let down by Blood Mountain one bit, I just miss their heavier sound now--I'm hoping for at least a two to three song dose of that on the next one...God, I hope this album isn't centered around "heart". I don't need soul rending introspection from Mastodon.

I loved their last album as well and considering how much I am fond of them, I will let them take us in any direction they want, they are unique and talented. Cynic, O know about the guitar thing, it's harder than you think. I love the drummer as well, he is great.

I agree with you all - I love Mastodon - they are incredible. I particularly, liked Remission, the best. I hope they incorporate that type of sound back into the new album. Most of the Mastodon's melodies stick in my head. I love "march of the fire ants"...that song is sick. I also started listening to Baroness, they kick major a$$. I can't wait to see them again.

Man you gotta get more into the genre if you like baroness too, there is a heck of a lot more than just those two bands. But yeah im not a big remission guy but i absolutely love leviathan and blood mountain, and i like baroness too. Im excited they always have some sort of surprise. And actually their lyrics dont always suck either, they have some legitimately good lyrics, i really love the lyrics to Iron Tusk. And obviously the drums... well no need to say a lot about that. But yes they are harder to play than expected, although i can play some stuff.

These guys are one of the few prog metal bands that I really like, they're f***in' intense live, so sick. I thought their best work was remission.

LOL, yeah man. That album is one of the few albums that will make me stay there, eyes closed and imagining the whole Moby d*** book in my head. Somehow it fits. Plus I love the drumming. He's not doing the whole double bass drums but he rolls his drums like no one else. Truly, Mastodon are wayyyyyyyyyyy up there in my book. And I saw them live and loved it. Actually they were with Thine Eyes Bleed, Children Of Bottom, Lamb Of God and Slayer and they were one of the best act that night. Lamb Of God and Slayer for a reason I can't explain sucked ass. Mastondon, Children and Thine Eyes Bleed were going all in.

I only have the 'Call of Mastodon' or something... I need more and I need it nows. I always meant to get Blood Mountain from about five months before it came out I was waiting very excitedly, but somehow I just never got around to it :( Fire... water... earth... elements... not air... hey, maybe they'll decide metals aren't earth and do a 'metal' element album hahah!

Cynic, do tell more about this Ahab band, I'm very intrigued.

No idea who/what this Karilla is, but 'Ghost of'?... maybe it'll be a 'spirit' album or something (shrugs). I love these guessing games, hahah. Half the reason I get so excited every time a new Tool album is announced :P

I'm going to say because of the the Mastodon thing, Karilla is in fact some type of gorilla :P

psythe, Ahab are an atmospheric funeral doom metal band with an unbeatable Moby d*** theme. They only have one full length album but at the metal archives the average score after 7 reviews is 99% so they're good! It's the sort of album you listen to in the dark for an hour and think about being stranded out at sea, it's epic.
