Sony Music's U.S. label group has reportedly inked a deal with producer/Def Jam founder Rick Rubin to serve as the company's "music czar," overseeing the creative development of artists on both Columbia and Epic Records. According to the New York Post, Rubin signed on for the gig about a month ago and it could be announced as soon as this week.
Furthermore, Rubin previously distributed his American Recordings imprint through Columbia, but he now has a distribution deal with Warner Music Group. That would potentially have to be renegotiated or even terminated with Rubin joining the Sony camp. Rubin is currently working with Linkin Park and Metallica, among others, on their upcoming new albums.
