Kings Of Mercia Signs With Metal Blade

The combination of big riffs, driving rhythms, thick yet lithe bass lines and rich vocal melodies has made for some of the greatest music of all time, and in the hands of Kings Of Mercia this recipe is intoxicating. The new project features guitarist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning, OSI, Tuesday the Sky) along with the vocal talents of Steve Overland (FM). The duo are joined on their debut album by the dynamic rhythm section of drummer extraordinaire Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, Derek Sherinian), and bassist Joey Vera (Fates Warning, Armored Saint).

Music will be launched later this summer with an album scheduled for release this fall. Until then, fans can get an impression of what is to come by clicking here.

Fates Warning Announces New Album

On November 6th, Fates Warning will release their new album, "Long Day Good Night," via Metal Blade Records. For a first preview of the record, the new single, "Scars," can be heard below.

Fates Warning have been a formidable presence in progressive metal for more than 35 years, helping to shape and drive the genre without ever compromising their integrity or losing relevance. They return in 2020 with "Long Day Good Night," the most epic and longest album of their storied career - mixed by Joe Barresi. "The styles of music we've written distinguish this record from the rest of our catalogue," states vocalist Ray Alder. "There are some songs with electronics and some with a nice ethereal feel, as well as some pretty straightforward grooves, at least for us. And there are also some pretty heavy songs. We tried to give the listener a host of different things to listen to, as opposed to an album where every song sounds the same." As such, the album is something of a rollercoaster ride, moving through various moods and making for perhaps their most vital release to date.

Guitarist Jim Matheos began writing the album in mid-2019, working closely with Alder for about a year, honing the songs, completing 13 for their 13th full-length - which un-coincidentally has a total running time of 72:22. Despite their long history of making records, Alder makes it clear that the songs take a lot of work to realize. "Like all albums, nothing comes easy. It's quite a process to go from the idea to the actual finished song. Sometimes you think you're done with it, then you hear something else and you have to try that. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but you at least have to try it just so you know that in the end you've done everything possible to make it as good as it can be. Jim and I spent practically every day for the last year writing this album. I am very happy with the outcome, and with the blend of styles. I guess I could say that this album represents all of the years that we have been together." More...

Fates Warning Signs With Metal Blade Records

Metal Blade Records is proud to welcome Fates Warning to its worldwide roster! Fates Warning began in the early 1980's playing a traditional style of heavy metal. However, they quickly began to adopt a more technically proficient style and are considered by many to be the first true prog-metal band. While the band has subsequently moved in more melodic and ambient directions, they have remained a vibrant and well-respected cornerstone for the prog camp within the heavy metal strata.

Fates Warning's Ray Alder (vocals) comments: "All of us in Fates Warning are happy to announce that we are back with Metal Blade Records. Metal Blade has been there for us since the very beginning and we are proud to call them part of our family. The journey begins again and we cannot begin to say how excited we are to work together once more. A big thank you to our fans for sticking with us through all these years. We could not be here today without all of you. That is a fact. Thank you everyone. Here's to making some new memories!"

Fates Warning released their latest album, "Live Over Europe," last year to critical acclaim. The first live release featuring the current line-up [Ray Alder (vocals), Jim Matheos (guitars), Joey Vera (bass and vocals), Bobby Jarzombek (drums), Mike Abdow (guitars and vocals)], "Live Over Europe" contains 23 songs and was recorded at various European locations (Aschaffenburg / Germany, Belgrade / Serbia, Thessaloniki and Athens / Greece, Rome and Milan / Italy, Budapest / Hungary as well as Ljubljana / Slovenia) during their January 2018 headlining tour for "Theories Of Flight" (2016).

Jim Matheos Announces Ambient Project

Jim Matheos, founding guitarist of legendary U.S. progressive metallers Fates Warning, has announced the release of the debut album from his new ambient instrumental rock project Tuesday The Sky. The first full-length album "Drift" is set for release on June 30th, 2017, and sees Matheos expanding the boundaries of his sound ever further.

"Drift" came together in the downtime between Fates Warning finishing "Theories of Flight" and the beginning of the touring cycle, enabling Matheos to explore a type of atmospheric and instrumental music you might not expect of him.

He comments: "With this kind of music, it's a lot about creating a mood and letting that sink in and develop over long periods of time, as opposed to the more frenetic format of most prog music."

Taking cues from artists like Brian Eno, Boards Of Canada, Sigur Ros and Explosions In The Sky, he explores expansive textures and ambient electronica, as well as some of the most colossal riffs he has ever produced. More...

Fates Warning Issues Tour Recap

After just wrapping up a January / February European tour in support of the "Theories Of Flight" album, Fates Warning has now checked in with this recap:

"Well folks, we've been back from the European tour for a few days now, and now that I've had time to unwind and reflect on what this tour was like I'd like to share my thoughts with you all... First of all I would like to personally thank each and every person that made it out to our shows in Europe.

"This was a very special tour. Not that any of the others haven't been, this one was just electric. I could feel it every night I stepped out on the stage. Yes, we were excited to play the new material but it seems that most of the crowds were even more excited to hear it. You, our wonderful fans, have no idea how that feels. To have played in this band for so long and to have everyone singing along to the new album was just, well it was amazing. Thank you for that.

"The tour started out strong, with our first sold out show in Essen, Germany. What a great crowd and evening that was!! In fact the crowds for this tour were about twice as big as our last European tour... And we could not have asked for more enthusiastic crowds. Every night was just as exciting as the last. More...

Fates Warning Releases New Video

In promotion of new album "Theories Of Flight," U.S. progressive metal pioneers Fates Warning today premiere a promotional video for the song "Seven Stars."

Check out the clip, which was directed by David Brodsky for MyGoodEye, in the YouTube player below. Vocalist Ray Alder checked in with the following comment about the video:

"We are happy to debut the new video for 'Seven Stars' from our latest album 'Theories Of Flight.' This song is very special to me. The lyrics for this song were the first that I had written for the new album. I knew that my life was changing, I had met my lovely (now) wife who lived in Madrid, Spain and she was the inspiration for this song. I knew that I would be moving to Madrid soon, so the lyrics tended to come very organically.

"That theme would develop more as the writing progressed. Stories of change and moving on. Living life really. I found the flag of Madrid quite interesting. Seven white stars surrounded by red...Hence the inspiration for the title. I figured I would give a little tour of the city in the video since I'm now here. Enjoy!" More...
