The band I bring you today has special significance to me, because looking at its history is almost like looking at a mirror image of my own. Thirty years ago this year, when I got my start on college radio, these guys were the first band I ever sat in on an interview with. That interview was done by the other metal DJ on WNHU, with Joe DiBiase and John Arch sitting behind the mic with a demo in hand for their new band Misfit. That session was also one of their very first interviews as a band. Special times from a period long ago indeed. More...

This upcoming album will be the follow-up to 2004's "Fates Warning X." Further details will be announced as they are made available, and you can stay up to date on the album's progress over at the Fates Warning Facebook profile.

Los Angeles metal act Redemption has issued the following update about the band canceling their European tour dates:
"Dear friends: I am sorry to say that we are faced with the reality of having to cancel Redemption's intended European shows the summer.
"Part of our unique sound comes from our vocalist, Ray Alder of Fates Warning. As a long-time fan of Fates myself, I have always maintained that Redemption would not interfere with Ray's commitment to Fates, and we have worked very carefully and diligently since Ray joined Redemption in 2005 to ensure that both bands would be able to record and perform without conflict.
"We intended to play several shows in several countries this summer in support of our new CD, Snowfall on Judgment Day. Our management and local promoters in Europe worked hard to line up some great shows that we were very much looking forward to playing. Originally, there was no conflict, even when Fates announced some special shows and festivals to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their fantastic Parallels CD. More...

Progressive metal band REDEMPTION is readying their much anticipated fourth full-length release, "Snowfall On Judgment Day," which is set for a September 28th European release date (October 6th in North America) via Inside Out Music.
Formed in Los Angeles, California in 2000 by guitarist/keyboardist/songwriter Nicolas van Dyk, the band features legendary progressive metal vocalist Ray Alder of Fates Warning, as well as guitarist Bernie Versailles (Agent Steel), the rhythm section of Chris Quirarte (drums) and Sean Andrews (bass) and the keyboard talents of Greg Hosharian.
Nicolas van Dyk further comments: "We're very excited for the release of our fourth CD. We've continued to push the envelope of our unique combination of aggression and melody and the result is our heaviest and also our most melodic CD to date. There's a healthy variety in the songwriting, ranging from very heavy tracks to more ‘proggy’ songs, all of which share the melodic focus and emotional urgency that make our signature sound. We've had the opportunity to play a lot more together prior to the recording of Snowfall and I think the band is both organic sounding and tighter than ever. It's a record we're really proud of and we're glad to get it in the hands of our fans."
Throughout spring 2009 the band finalized Snowfall On Judgment Day, which was mixed by well-known producer Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Jorn Lande, Circus Maximus). The album also features James Labrie (Dream Theater) performing a duet guest vocal spot on the song “Another Day Dies.”
Redemption recently posted a new song, "Black and White World" on their MySpace player.

Bazillion Points Publishing has announced the first definitive book on the elusive world of progressive metal, written by esteemed metal crusader and prog manic and THE END RECORDS staff member Jeff Wagner. Scheduled for release in Autumn 2009, the book will detail the common movements of pioneers like OPETH, WATCHTOWER, VOIVOD, ATHEIST, DREAM THEATER, PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, CELTIC FROST, SIGH, and FATES WARNING — metal bands who have gone against the tide of tradition and conservatism. Linked by a desire to push heavy metal forward, these varied bands with a couple hundred other black sheep form the hard-to-pin-down category of "progressive metal."
Beginning with the hugely influential mid-1970s efforts of Canadian band RUSH, Wagner's book explores the shared lineage of prog rock and metal. He unfurls the huge tapestry and examines the sounds and styles created during the genre's 40-year history, including: the "Big Three" — QUEENSRŸCHE, FATES WARNING, and DREAM THEATER; extreme prog pioneers VOIVOD and CELTIC FROST; Norway's post-black metal avant garde (ULVER, ARCTURUS, VED BUENS ENDE, BEYOND DAWN, etc.); and of course the huge global movement of Big Three-worshippers in the 1990s and the leaders that emerged (AYREON, SYMPHONY X, etc.). The vastness of what can be considered "progressive metal" has proven to be one of the most viable, malleable forms in all of modern music. More...
REDEMPTION, the Los Angeles-based progressive metal band led by guitarist/songwriter Nicolas van Dyk and featuring vocal legend Ray Alder of FATES WARNING, has issued the following update:
"We are in the finishing touches of the video edit for our upcoming DVD, and in finalizing distribution terms with InsideOut. We're putting together some great bonus materials for it, including a performance of us with our friends in PAGAN'S MIND, a video montage of our tour with DREAM THEATER, and some other goodies. We've also selected a winning entry from our contest where YOU, our fans and friends, pick the name of our DVD. The name is great, and we'll announce it as soon as the 'ink is dry' on our deal with InsideOut."
"I'm pleased to announce that Greg Hosharian, the immensely talented keyboard player who joined us last year for our tour with DREAM THEATER, has joined us full-time. He will be playing keyboards along with me on our next CD, and will be touring, recording and writing with us in the future."
"Lastly, those of you in Southern California on March 15th may be interested in seeing Chris [Quirarte] at his drum clinic at Timbo's drum shop."
