Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal

Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.

For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.) Lita Ford To Release New Album "Time Capsule"

American vocalist/guitarist Lta Ford is set to release her latest album "Time Capsule" on SPV/Steamhammer on April 15, 2016. The very special and unusual recording turns back the clock to a time when honest, down-to-earth rock music was still handmade and recorded without digital tricks and contraptions. "Time Capsule" is a "throwback" record that boasts identifiable voices and brilliant players jamming without any planning or pressure. Some of the album`s highlights: Billy Sheehan (bass), Rodger Carter (drums), Dave Navarro (mandolin), Jeff Scott Soto (vocals), Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander (backing vocals) and Gene Simmons (bass).

"There was a shitload of these 24-track analog tapes in the closet in my house (in the islands)," Ford recalls. "This is some of the best work I`ve ever done and it was sitting there. I grabbed two suitcases and took them back to the United States." Imagine Ford dragging a pair of suitcases full of analog tapes through the Caribbean dirt back to Los Angeles, so, as she recalls, "we could bake these fuckers," due to their age. "If you just put them on the reel, they would flake. I was chewing my fingernails, thinking, 'Please work!' And they did!" More...

Lita Ford Recruits New Guitarist

Lita Ford has announced the addition of guitar player Patrick Kennison to her band. Patrick has been on the road with the group the past few weeks and is truly bringing a new energy to the table. Lita comments:

"Patrick Kennison is our latest and greatest addition to Team Lita! He shreds on guitar and is killer at singing backing vocals. He adds so much energy to the already thunderous sound, just another reinforcement that we will be blowing the doors off the place, and killing it in our future recordings.

"We are able to bring down the house together with Marty O'Brien jamming on Bass and Bobby Rock behind us bashing the drums, together they are the best of the best musicians, Hollywood California's finest line up. Welcome Patrick Kennison!!!"

Kennison also comments on joining the band: "It's both an honor and a blast to share the studio and stage with the queen of metal. I attended many Lita Ford concerts as a kid and was always blown away by her guitar playing and take no prisoners approach to the concert stage."

In other Lita Ford news, Lita narrated the brand new Randy Castillo documentary entitled "The Life, Blood and Rhythm of Randy Castillo." The film is the story of the late drummer who played with Ozzy Osborne, Motley Crue and other rock and roll icons of the 1980s and 1990s. The movie will premiere on November 4th at the Red Nation Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA. For more info on the film, head to this location.
