Avenged Sevenfold and DragonForce On Ozzfest 2006

It comes as little surprise that Avenged Sevenfold have been officially confirmed as the mystery band on the main stage for Ozzfest 2006. The real surprise announcement is that power metal band Dragonforce, recently signed to Roadrunner Records in North America and rumored to be joining Gigantour 2006, has been added as the main stage opener as well.

Ozzy Osbourne is now slated to headline the second stage on three dates (replacing some dates that he was previously thought to be headlining the main stage):

July 8 - San Bernardino, CA's Hyundai Pavilion of Glen Helen
July 11 - San Antonio, TX at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
July 22 - East Troy, WI at the Alpine Valley Music Theatre

OZZY says, "After 10 years of headlining Ozzfest's main-stage I think it's time for a change. I haven't had a chance to play this close to an audience in years and I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it."

Also announced is that Ozzfest emcee Big Dave and professional Ozzfest party guy, Eddie, have begun their nationwide search visiting 19 of the festival's 26 cities to find the first-ever Miss Ozzfest. The duo will be accepting entries and taking photographs of Miss Ozzfest candidates in each city. Throughout the summer the Ozzfest fans can vote for your favorites at Ozzfest.com. All entries collected from Big Dave and Eddie will be posted for you to vote on. The top three in each city will be awarded FREE tickets to the show in their city, where at some point during the evening's festivities, the three contestants will be presented on stage to the fans who will vote on a winner. Photos of each winning contestant, including the top vote getters from Raleigh and West Palm Beach, will be posted once again on Ozzfest.com, where fans can pick their Miss Ozzfest 2006. Final voting will be held at Ozzfest.com on August 7 and 8. The winning beauty will be awarded the grand prize and receive round trip airfare and accommodations for her and a guest to attend the year's final show August 13 in West Palm Beach where she'll be crowned Miss Ozzfest 2006.

Sounds Of The Underground DVD Info Revealed

Last year marked the inaugural Sounds of the Underground tour, which saw 17 of the best and most brutal metal acts around traverse the U.S. and Canada in what proved to be a very successful alternative to the more commercial Ozzfest. The tour hit the parking lot of the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on July 2nd, 2005, and with it came almost 5000 fans. Metal bands like A Life Once Once Lost and Strapping Young Lad hammered out their sets alongside hardcore acts like Madball and Throwdown in the sweltering 95+ degree midday heat. As the sun began to set, stalwarts like Chimaira, Poison the Well and From Autumn to Ashes played well into the darkness. All of the passion and power of that day is captured in Sounds of the Underground Live: Vol. 1, which will hit streets on June 20th.

DRT Entertainment will be releasing the DVD which documents the day's festivities, complete with performances from 16 of the 17 artists who participated in the tour. Along with over 90 minutes of performance footage, the DVD also features vignettes on every band on the tour, along with a host of hilarious 'guest interview' segments from members of GWAR, Every Time I Die and Throwdown. The DVD was filmed by Doug Spangenberg of Highroller Studios (Lamb of God's Killadelphia).

Featuring live performances from:

DevilDriver
A Life Once Lost
Madball
High on Fire
Strapping Young Lad
Throwdown
Norma Jean

Unearth Unveil New Album Title and Theme

Unearth have officially titled their upcoming Metal Blade Records release "III: In The Eyes Of Fire." The announcement comes coupled with the following statement:

"'III-In the Eyes of Fire' is our angriest, darkest, fastest and heaviest record to date. The title is a reflection of a couple different things for us. For starters it puts us in the place of our current worldly events. Last record we wrote about things brewing all around us in politics, environmental issues and war, but this record deals with the effects of those very things and the consequences we are all dealing with right now and will continue to deal with until changes are made. We are in our nations most critical point since the 60's and more importantly devastation looms in the near future if we continue to make mistake after mistake with unjust wars and environmental disregard. The title also represents the personal struggles we all face day to day and our constant battles to overcome adversity. We cannot fucking wait to show people what we have in store with this record."

Unearth Guitarist Checks In From The Studio

UNEARTH have entered a Seattle studio with producer Terry Date (PANTERA, DEFTONES) to begin recording their forthcoming, as-yet-untitled LP — which hits stores August 8 via Metal Blade Records. Check out studio reports from guitarist Ken Susi at MetalBladeStore.com.

Regarding the bandd's decision to work with Date on the new CD, Susi recently told MTV.com, "We had other producers in mind, and we'd locked in a producer who's an amazing talent and shall remain nameless. But Terry stepped in at the right time and had the right things to tell us. He had dinner over my family's house, and we just sat around talking about music and life. He just seemed like he's laid-back enough to help us find what it is inside that needs to come out on tape, but he also has the type of stern attitude where he'll tell you if something's wrong."

When UNEARTH started writing the follow-up to 2004's "The Oncoming Storm", "we just wanted to simplify a little bit," Susi said. "We wanted to do what we normally do, as far as writing intricate riffs and really hard things to play — things that come together really well. But we wanted to strip everything down and have a more organic record — just a more natural feeling, with fewer triggers and more power and realness. We've always been a live band more than a recorded band, and I think we need to start transporting what we do live onto record."

While in Seattle, Susi said the band plans to record a cover of "It's Clobberin' Time", which will appear on an upcoming tribute to New York hardcore legends SICK OF IT ALL.

Unearth Set To Enter The Studio

Unearth will enter Studio X in Seattle next Wednesday with producer Terry Date (Soundgarden, Pantera) to record their next full-length. Date will also mix the record. Here's a statement from Unearth frontman Trevor Phipps:

"If anyone were to tell me (when I was a kid) that my band was going to be doing a record with the guy that produced most of the Pantera, Deftones and Soundgarden records one day; I would have told them they were crazy. Working with Terry Date is another of the amazing accomplishments for us on a growing list of accomplishments. We have toured with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Slayer and with Vinnie and Dime. We have toured much of the world and we have shared the stage with all of the current heavy music leaders on all of the big modern day tours; and now, we are working with the leader of heavy music's producer and engineer, Terry Date. Unearth will forever sound like Unearth and we know Terry has an knack for bringing out the best qualities and sounds in the bands he works with and we could not be more stoked to work with him. There is no question that this next record will be our best to date."

Look for the new album to hit stores on August 8th through Metal Blade Records.

Metallica, System of a Down Rumored For Ozzfest 06

METALLICA and SYSTEM OF A DOWN are strongly rumored to have secured the "headliner" and "special guest" slots at this year's Ozzfest, according to BLABBERMOUTH.NET, citing "industry insiders."

Although no bands have been officially announced for this year's festival, DISTURBED frontman David Draiman revealed during an appearance on the Seattle station 99.9 KISW in January that his band will be appearing on this summer's Ozzfest. Meanwhile, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY's booking agent recently told Billboard magazine that Zakk Wylde and Co. have also been confirmed for this year's trek. UNEARTH guitarist Ken Susi told the Alternative Press on Feb. 14 that his band will be one of the rotating headliners on the second stage of Ozzfest 2006, while Jesse Hayes of the Cleveland radio station WMMS 100.7 FM announced last month during his daily "Buzzard Rock Report" segment that BODY COUNT — the heavy metal band fronted by rapper/actor Ice T — will be performing at this year's traveling festival. BLEEDING THROUGH frontman Brandon Schieppati reportedly revealed at the conclusion of the band's performance at Neumo's in Seattle, Washington Sunday night (Feb. 19) that they will be taking part in Ozzfest 2006. Additional offers to play the tour have been extended to AVENGED SEVENFOLD and ATREYU, according to recently published interviews with both artists.

The Ozzfest organizers are expected to announce the official lineup for this year's festival sometime in March.

Unearth To Headline Second Stage Of Ozzfest 2006

Alternative Press recently spoke with Unearth guitarist Ken Susi about the recording of his band's new album and left the conversation with this exclusive piece of information: The Boston-based metal monsters will be headlining the second stage of this year's Ozzfest.

"We're playing something like third-to-last on the bill or something; yeah, we're basically headlining the second stage," reveals Susi.

Ozzfest organizers have not announced any other bands confirmed for the 2006 run, but Unearth aren't unfamiliar with the tour, having played its second stage in 2004.

Susi informed AP that the tour will again run from the beginning of July through the end of August as in years past, but offered no insight to any other bands confirmed for the trek.

Hard Rock/Metal Musicians Remember Dimebag Darrell

MTV News spoke with members of some 30 hard rock and metal bands about the Dimebag they remember. They told MTV how much he'd meant to them, they shared fond memories and spoke of the impact he made on their lives and their music. Here are several excerpts from the article:

David Draiman - frontman, Disturbed: "During our second Ozzfest, we were holed up in Dallas for about two or three days ... hanging out at Dime's place — it was an eclectic house. There's all kinds of Pantera memorabilia and Dimebag memorabilia all over the place. But you could never make the mistake of falling asleep at Dime's. He'd wake you up the way he always did: with firecrackers. He'd always set off an entire chain of firecrackers not two inches from my head. One time ... Dime took us to a strip club where we all judged a bikini contest. There was never a wrong time in the day for Dime to hit a strip club. ... Dime was just this character who was very easy to love. He didn't have a bad bone in his body, and was ready to give you the shirt off his back at all times. It was his mission in life to make sure every single moment you spent with him was the best moment of your life. He was selfless."

Zakk Wylde - frontman, Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society: "Whenever you were around Dime, there was never a boring moment. He was the coolest guy on the planet. He was an even better person than he was a guitar player, if that's even possible. Whenever me and him would hook up, forget about it, bro. We'd always have to have a spare kidney, liver and pancreas on ice."

Brian Fair - frontman, Shadows Fall: "Dime seemed to have a real problem with the clock on our tour bus. It all started with his tour manager trying to tell him it was time to leave. ... We were having a good old time and Dime didn't want to go to bed. So, as soon as he was told it was time to leave, he grabbed the clock off of the wall and screams at the top of his lungs, 'There is no time!' and he smashed his hand right through it. The clock was made of glass and metal, and shrapnel flew everywhere. He went through three clocks on our bus like that. Anytime anyone tried to tell him it was time to go, he'd destroy the clock. He didn't want to end the party — he wanted it to keep going. We kept replacing the clock because we wanted to see what happened next."

Unearth Frontman Talks About New Album

UNEARTH vocalist Trevor Phipps has checked in with the following update:

"It has been an amazing couple of years for us and we are just blown away by the overwhelming response we have received around the world. We are about to go into writing hibernation and pool our collective experiences together to make another bad-ass record. So far what we have written is faster, heavier and darker than anything we have ever done. We will unleash the best record of our lives next summer. With us a ton of touring is imminent when we put out a record, so we will be back to all the places we traveled to the past two years and even add a few more countries and continents to the list in 2006 and 2007.
