Kataklysm Reports From Invaluable Darkness Tour
Vocalist Maurizio Iacono of the Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM has issued the following update:
"Here we are, almost half way through the 'Invaluable Darkness' tour and the fans' reception to KATAKLYSM has been nothing short of astonishing. Opening a tour like this is a big task for any band and on top of it, being the band on the bill with the least recognition and the only band that hasn't been on Ozzfest and tours of the like makes our job ten times harder... BUT my friends, let me tell you something — it's been the fucking opposite! Every show we came ready and determined with no expectations, so we went on and the place was full and the people were loud. They are ready for us, singing our lyrics, pounding their fists in the air and creating some of the biggest mosh pits we have ever seen in North America for KATAKLYSM. We've had several promoters coming to thank us after the show, impressed with the reactions, etc. 'Havent seen anything like it for an opening act in a very long, long time' type comments. It's really overwhelming for us and our answer to them is this: thank the fans for coming early and supporting us, thank them for making this show so great for all of us. The fans have all the power, they are the voice, not the industry. We serve the fans.
"Thank you for supporting the underdog, we love it!!!
"OK, now let's talk about the band responsible that gave KATAKLYSM the chance in the first place: DIMMU BORGIR.
"They have been phenomenal. They set a real dark ambiance and the expectation is met. I enjoy watching them every night, DEVILDRIVER and UNEARTH have also been giving 100% kicking ass and doing very good. We are getting along with everyone on the tour... and YES, for all those who are wondering, we are also sharing a bus with DEVILDRIVER, It was either gonna be the end of the world or we would respect each other and make it work. They extended their hand to us, and if I may say so myself, it's been all good. The boys have had nothing but respect for KATAKLYSM and we're having fun with them.
"Well that's it for now. Memorable, memorable... words that come to my mind. Everyone come early, don't miss out on KATAKLYSM's devastation... Be there and say hello if you see us in the crowd, we wanna meet with you."
KATAKLYSM recently decided to "immortalize" the character that was featured on the cover of their most recent album, "In the Arms of Devastation," and have him re-appear as the main character — dubbed "The Heartbeast" — on their next offering.
Commented KATAKLYSM vocalist Maurizio Iacono: "We had so [much] killer feedback on the artwork but especially on the character that we decided to keep him as the band's fifth band member... kinda like IRON MAIDEN did with 'Eddie.' We have the perfect concept for the next album art... it will be bad-ass!"
Unearth Checks In From Dimmu Borgir Tour
UNEARTH has checked in with the following update:
"So far the DIMMU BORGIR tour has been a damn good one. Thanks to everyone of the UNEARTH faithful who have come out to support us on this eclectic bill. We have another three weeks left on this tour, so if it comes near you make sure to come out and rage with us. Our friends in DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM are tearing shit up, so make sure to get there early to see them both rip.
"After an un-fucking-real headlining tour of Europe this March and April with JOB FOR A COWBOY, DESPISED ICON and DAATH, we are headed back overseas for over a dozen European festivals starting June 9th in Spain at Festimad and ending July 1st in Germany at With Full Force. Besides that, another Australian run is in the works for the summer, so stay tuned for details on that real soon."
Unearth Party w/ Aqua Teen Hunger Force Pre-Tour
UNEARTH were the main attraction at last week's Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres launch party in Austin TX.
UNEARTH have recorded the song "THE CHOSEN" for the forthcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force feature film, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters ( in theaters on 4/13/2007) and the accompanying soundtrack Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Colon The Soundtrack (in stores on 4/10/2007).
Straight after their stint in Austin, TX, the band headed to Europe to join forces with DAATH, DESPISED ICON, and Metal Blade Record's newest member to the family, JOB FOR A COWBOY on a tour that will lead into late April.
"We are all eager as fuck to headline the UK and Europe for the first time. We have done some amazing European tours before, but it will feel damn good to play a full set and put on our show for our friends overseas" says vocalist, Trevor Phipps "We are hitting up some smaller venues, most without barricades, so we can bring a real Unearth show to the people. We hand picked Job For a Cowboy, Despised Icon and Daath to make sure the entire bill was one that will keep the crowds looking over their shoulders at all times!"
UNEARTH will then make their way back to the US for the highly anticipated tour with DIMMU BORGIR, DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM.
"After the headlining run we come right back home for a North American tour with Dimmu Borgir, Devildriver and Kataklysm. We haven't hit the road with Dimmu since the 2004 Ozzfest, so it will be good to get out there and do it again in a club setting. Devil Driver is always a great band to share the stage with and Kataklysm is one of the best death metal bands around today" enthuses Phipps "This tour is going to be an un-fucking-real diverse clash of heavy music... good times ahead!"

Slayer and Unearth Devastate Washington, DC
On Tuesday, February 20, I had the chance to attend the second of two sold-out shows by Slayer and Unearth at Washington, DC's 9:30 club. The 9:30 club is one of the best in the area, attracting the best bands and touring packages short of ones that fill sports arenas. Holding over 1300 people, this club is jam-packed for sold out shows, and Slayer always seems to fill it up, if not sell it out completely. I went into the show excited to see both bands, as I enjoy them both immensely. Yet, I was at the same time a little skeptical - first of the pairing: Unearth's melodic metalcore with Slayer. Slayer's fans are notoriously brutal on openers, so would Unearth hold up under that sort of pressure? Second, I was worried that Slayer might not live up to their God Hates Us All tour, which was penomenal, especially after seeing how rough they were live on Jimmy Kimmel recently. By the end of the night, all of my doubts would be laid to rest, however. More...

Unearth "Stoked" To Join Slayer On Tour
LiveDaily.com reports: For Unearth, vocalist Trevor Phipps, it'll be an honor to take to the road with speed-metal godfathers Slayer later this month.
"I don't know of any metal heads that do not like Slayer," Phipps explained during a recent e-mail interview. "My first real concert was seeing 'Clash of the Titans' with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth when I was 12 years old. Hell, the band I was in in high school even covered 'Dead Skin Mask.'
"Needless to say, we are all stoked as all hell to be part of this tour. We have hung out with [Slayer guitarist] Kerry King a bunch of times and he is a cool cat. We are all looking forward to getting to know the other dudes as well."
Unearth, which also includes guitarists Ken Susi and Biz McGrath, bassist John Maggare and drummer Mike Justin, will spend Jan. 24 through Feb. 28 opening for Slayer throughout the United States in support of its album "III In the Eyes of Fire." The record was produced by Terry Date, best known for his work with Metallica.
"[Date] had a lot of great ideas for capturing the live energy we were going for on the new disc," Phipps said. "He is a master at recording bands. The biggest reason we chose him was because of his past work from Pantera and the Deftones to Dredge. This guy knows his aggressive music, so it was a perfect fit for us."
In terms of Unearth's catalogue, "III" fits right in, according to Phipps. It subtly traces Unearth's musical history while bringing in new sounds.
"It has elements of every recording we have, but at the same time is a natural progression of who and what we are as a band. It is necessary for a band to grow as musicians and as songwriters and we all believe that this record is our best material to date."
Those sounds are created by Susi and McGrath, who then bring their riffs to practice so Justin can throw down beats. Each member gives their input as to how the songs should be arranged.
"Once the song is relatively close to being done, I get a vibe from the tune and then put the lyrics down," Phipps explained.

Unearth Completes Video For "Sanctity of Brothers"
Unearth has completed work on a video for "Sanctity of Brothers." Frontman Trevor Phipps detailed the process:
"We had just begun to schedule the shooting of our second video, 'Sanctity of Brothers' with famed director Darren Doane, when he decided to retire to pursue other professional goals. Fortunately, he had written a pretty sick video treatment and told us we could use it if the director was new, talented and had never directed a music video before. So we took to searching the Internet for some new talent and came across a guy from Prague named 'Soren.' Soren's images were dark and well thought out, so we got in touch with him. We showed him the treatment Darren had written and he agreed to go with it, but he wanted to put his own flavor and twists into the video. This guy is crazy, he had a 10 day shooting schedule spanning 3 countries; he used a helicopter and some cool animation. It will have the same high energy as our video for 'Giles,' but will have an in-depth storyline and will be our first video with special effects. The video will be more like a short film with three parts. The first and third sections will be the intro and ending, while the second chapter will be the actual song. Soren is on to some groundbreaking shit here and we are stoked to be part of it. Even though Darren was not involved, we’re just happy that it will be different. Too many videos are the same these days with all the storylines, the bands and all the shots seeming to blend together. SOREN at least wants to challenge that and we support him in his attempt. We think that may be one of the reasons Doane retired and gave us the demands he did on his treatment. Look for the new video mid-January, just in time for our North American run with the mighty Slayer."
A short trailer for the video is available online.

Slayer will hit the road on January 24 for a four-week North American tour. The dates are in support of the band's latest album, "Christ Illusion," this lineup's first new studio album since 1990's "Seasons In The Abyss," and its highest-charting album ever (#5 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums Chart). Unearth will open all shows.
"Over the past few months, we've had a great time headlining 'Unholy Alliance' in North America and Europe, bringing a killer five-act bill to the fans," said Slayer's King. "But we're looking forward to this next tour, where it's just Slayer and Unearthed, playing venues where we can be right in the fans' faces."
These North American dates come on the heels of Slayer's successful international tour which, between August and November, took the band to SRO shows in the UK, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Singapore, Japan, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Finland, Denmark and Sweden. While in Germany, the band paid a special visit to the U.S. Troops of the 52nd Services Squadron located on the Spangdahlem U.S. Air Force Base.

Full Blown Chaos Cancels European Tour Dates
Due to financial circumstances, Full Blown Chaos has dropped off their scheduled European tour with Hatebreed and Unearth. Here's what the band had to say about the situation:
"Once again, we're here apologizing to our European fans. And, once again there's a disaster with getting overseas. It's completely out of our hands and it sucks. We wish there was a way to get over there, especially since we were announced to be on the tour. There's just no funding for us to get there. We're doing our best to make it up to guys. We're hoping to tour Europe early next year! Once again, sorry guys and girls. We love Europe and our European fans, we will be back!!!!"
