Denim And Leather: Celebrating 35 Years Of NWOBHM

This month marks thirty five years since one of the most important terms in heavy metal history was coined. After a show featuring Iron Maiden, Angel Witch and Samson, Sounds writer Geoff "Deaf" Barton wrote a review of the concert in which a phrase was used that still stands strong today. It was the time when head banging public was introduced to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. The term was arguably created to cause a stir amongst fans who would argue that heavy metal bands in Britain was nothing new and that the likes of Black Sabbath and Judas Priest had been packing out large venues and appearing on such television shows as Top of the Pops for the last few years, despite the dominance of punk rock. However, these bands were different. They possessed the energy of punk but had the look and volume of the early metal bands before them. They took heavy metal away from the grandiose indulgence which some bands had become embroiled in and brought it back to the common man.

It was truly an exciting movement, full of high quality bands which would go on to influence hundreds more and in some cases, become superstars themselves. More or less every metal fan will be able to tell you that Iron Maiden was one such NWOBHM band, with a slightly smaller number being able to point to Def Leppard as another group from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal who went on to stardom after the release of their excellent self-titled EP and debut album, "On Through the Night," following which they shifted direction to the band we know today. Fozzy And Raven Hit Springfield, Virginia

I recently made my first trip to the United States, for which I decided that catching a metal show was mandatory. The best option was by far a trip to the Empire in Springfield, Virginia, where Fozzy were headlining on May 5th, a show sweetened immensely by the addition of New Wave of British Heavy Metal legends Raven performing as special guests. The venue itself is quite impressive, it's got a nice lounge area before heading into the main venue itself, which is plenty spacious but still relatively compact, perfect for up and coming metal acts as well as those with a cult following.

Unfortunately, the show was far from sold out but there was still a decent sized crowd in attendance for the festivities on hand, which began with a local outfit called Shotgun Sugar, who were exclusively a covers band, performing songs by AC/DC, Journey and the like. They served their purpose as a warm up act before Newcastle nutters Raven took to the stage.

Raven are known for their energetic live performances and influential, hectic sound, something I am pleased to say they still possess in abundance. They kicked things off with the "All For One" opener, "Take Control," which immediately caught the crowd's attention. From then on, it was classic after classic, with songs such as "Live at the Inferno" and "Hard Ride" being thrown to the audience at full speed, as well as the title track from their 1981 debut album, "Rock Until You Drop," which had been slowed down for a more anthem like vibe. The interaction between the Gallagher brothers is still great and Raven put on a proper, old school heavy metal show with plenty of crowd banter, posing and a mid-set guitar solo. They finished their forty minute set with the hit, "On and On" from the 1985 album, "Stay Hard," much to the delight of fans in attendance. Of course, there'll always be a few songs which would have been great to hear such as "Don't Need Your Money" and "Crash, Bang, Wallop" but Raven's catalogue is strong enough that even if some favourites aren't busted out, you're guaranteed great music and a great time. 70,000 Tons Of Metal: Day Four

I woke up with a four alarm hangover….it was my birthday! For the second year in a row, I just couldn’t believe that I would spend it in such “majesty on the seas” with bands I admire and musicians I worship. I rose after just 4 ½ hours and reached for the knife that felt buried in my left temple. A quick look out the porthole of the room revealed a cloudy, foggy and rainy day. I stumbled to the shower and managed to get ready for the first show – Atrocity on the pool deck. I took the elevator to floor 11 to get some breakfast and I peaked through the back stage door (just out the elevator) and the rain was torrential. Ok…how is this going to work? More...

70,000 Tons Of Metal: Day One

It seemed like one year had passed in a blink of an eye. No sooner had I experienced my first 70,000 Tons of Metal, which included a birthday that saw Helloween, Rage (w/Lingua Mortis Orchestra) and Metal Church play, than I was plotting my next adventure on the high seas. The floating festival is not only the most unique and phenomenal metal sojourns in the world, its boasts a diverse genre spanning 40+ bands. Though the 2013 installment represented an array of bands more geared towards my personal favorite tastes, a “Barge to Hell” like fog is built up around this year with Carcass, Obituary, Massacre, Death: DTA Tours, Satyricon, Terrorizer among a few which has swung the pendulum towards a harsher environment. For the traditional and power styles there is return act and “athletic rock” legends Raven, German euro power and proclaimed “happy metal” act Freedom Call, German symphonic metallers Xandria, Israeli symphonic ambassadors of peace Orphaned Land and the 700 piece traveling city Haggard, which single handedly make this 71,000 Tons of Metal. Old Bridge Metal Militia Benefit Show Report

The Old Bridge Metal Militia, credited with jump starting the metal community of New Jersey by opening their hearts and doors to the bands we old timers loved in our youth, held one of the most brilliant concerts to directly benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy, the superstorm which ripped through the Jersey shore last year. Many people still suffer from that devastating storm, but to have the metal community be credited with assisting those in need was an honor to be part. Shortly after the event, it was revealed that through ticket sales and raffle sales, the event raised over $40,000 for the cause - a staggering number for the sold out event that housed 1,500 people.

I sprung for the VIP experience, for the opportunity to meet and talk with some of my idols like Dee Snider, John & Mark Gallagher, Joe Hasselvander, Mark Tornillo, Robb Reiner, David Rock Feinstein, Carl Canedy, AJ Pero, Eddie Ojeda was just too hard to pass up. The 2.5 hour drive from my safe zone in Connecticut was filed with a playlist featuring such classics as “Under the Blade,” “Take Control,” “Let Them Eat Metal” and “Metal On Metal,” and as good fortune would have it, I heard them all live. Raven To Release "Rock Until You Drop" DVD

Veteran British/American heavy metal trio Raven will release "Rock Until You Drop - A Long Days Journey," a two-disc DVD, as a digipak via SPV/Steamhammer June 21st (Germany), June 24th (EU) and July 2nd (USA/Canada).

The release contains four 4.5 hours of concert footage from around the world, plus studio, backstage, interview footage with the band, the fans, musicians and producer. It tells the story of over three decades of trailblaizing metal mayhem!

From the well-documented early days as NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) frontrunners, Raven's albums "Rock Until You Drop", "Wiped Out" and "All For One" virtually invented both the speed metal and power metal genres — during the trailblazing USA tours of the '80s introducing the States to "athletic rock," as well as giving opening acts like Metallica and Anthrax its first tours, through the doldrums of the late '80s/early '90s when a grunge-obsessed media wrote off so many acts, Raven has consistently proved to be both survivors par excellence and in a genre of grim imitation shown that they are "the real thing". Where so many of their contemporaries have either faded creatively or become parodies of themselves, RAVEN have consistently pushed the envelope while retaining their unique sound and attack — both in the studio & in their true element, onstage!
