VH1's 'Most Metal Moments' Selling Disinformation

Tony Hicks of the Contra Costa Times has issued the following report:

VH1 is selling disinformation again in the name of being cute. This has become a real problem over there, where reaction over a few funny shows is turning the network into the obnoxious kid who won't stop popping off.

I'm writing about, of course, this awful "100 Most Metal Moments", which first showed its ugly head last year. At first, I was repulsed, angered ... and angered some more. I wanted someone at VH1 to pay for their stupidity and thoughtlessness in not only having no idea what metal was, but executing a show that, to some, would certainly be the authoritative voice on the subject. It's like giving Ashlee Simpson a part in a Janis Joplin bio film.

Once I calmed down, I realized this would go away. It wouldn't spread disinformation. VH1's addiction to cuteness, via second-rate celebrities popping off about things they don't understand, would take them in new directions. Or so I thought.

VH1 has decided to replay the show this month, which means that at any given time, a viewer has the chance to hear some so-called expert equate BON JOVI with the term "metal." Now I'm no Count Grishnackh, but in ninth grade I did ride all the way in the closed trunk of a Camaro (there was no room in the back seat) to see BLACK SABBATH at the Cow Palace.

Anyways, here's some of the VH1 tidbits a viewer can get brainwashed into believing are "metal" or even "most metal" if they're not careful: More...

Judas Priest World Tour Update

JUDAS PRIEST Management Co-Ordinator Jayne Andrews has issued the following update via the band's official web site:

"Pease be a little bit patient and understand that the world is a very big place and trying to set up shows worldwide takes time!!!! We can't be everywhere all at once!!

"We haven't forgotten about Canada — just as we haven't forgotten about all the other places like South America, Mexico, France, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand etc., etc!!! We are working on many other dates and will be announcing them just as soon as they are finalised - so please have a little bit of faith and trust us!! When we have some dates confirmed in Canada and everywhere else you will read them here!!"

JUDAS PRIEST have moved up the start date of their North American tour by a couple of days. The band will kick things off May 30 at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, rather than at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1.

More Ripper Owens Solo Project Info Revealed

Former JUDAS PRIEST and current ICED EARTH frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens is currently shopping a five-song CD from his solo project, tentatively dubbed BEYOND FEAR. Songs featured on the CD are as follows:

01. I Don't Need This
02. And You Will Die
03. It Is Me
04. Telling Lies
05. The Faith

BLABBERMOUTH.NET, who had an opportunity to hear the recording, says it boasts a thick, heavy riffing style and extremely powerful vocals from Owens. Traces of JUDAS PRIEST, PANTERA and BLACK SABBATH are all present along with a healthy dose of double-bass drumming, which adds a modern edge to what is essentially a traditional metal approach.

As previously reported, Owens will be joined on his upcoming solo album by guitarist John Comprix (13 FACES, SPAWN) and an as-yet-undetermined drummer (original choice ICED EARTH's Bobby Jarzombek recently decided against becoming involved with the project). A tentative late 2005/early 2006 release is expected.

Metal Musicians Pay Tribute To Anthrax

Metal musicians congratulate Anthrax on their 20th anniversary:

Megadeth's Dave Mustaine: "Anthrax is a band that I have always respected, that has always mattered and was very important to the American metal scene. As part of the 'big four' they were responsible for an enormous amount of the credit for helping establish American metal bands as serious contenders in the world of metal."

Metallica's Kirk Hammett: "Anthrax's music matters. In the pantheon of modern metal, ANTHRAX are certainly a cornerstone, and if one listens, one can hear their influence on any number of up and coming bands of the new generation."

Deftones' Abe Cunningham: "Anthrax plays a huge role in Stef and me meeting and starting to jam together; we met through a mutual friend who gave me my first copy of 'Among the Living'. Deftones started in 1988, but before that it was just the two of us in his mom's hot ass garage with the dryer on and the washing machine overflowing trying to make it through 'Indians' and 'Caught In A Mosh'. I would like to thank you guys for the inspiration, your precision, your tones, your dedication and for having the nut sacks to try shit that no one would. Happy 20th Anniversary!!! All the best."

Judas Priest's Rob Halford: "Everyone in Judas Priest congratulates our good friends from Anthrax for passing their 20th-year metal milestone. We have always been fans of the band and had the pleasure to do many shows together. Anthrax are true pioneers with their unique style, sound and heavy brand of metal. They have always and will continue to inspire and influence those around them within the metal world." More...

Original Priest Singer Completes New Solo Album

Original JUDAS PRIEST singer Al Atkins has completed work on his fifth solo album, entitled "Demon Deceiver".

The CD, which features artwork by MAGNUM bassist Al Barrow (who also runs Generic Designs), was pieced together over the last ten months with the help of South African guitarist Mike de Jager, Simon Lees (BUDGIE; once voted guitarist of the year by Guitar magazine), Brian Tatler (DIAMOND HEAD), bassist Pete Emms (THE VASELINE RATS), and drummers Adrian Badland and Mick Hales. Among the songs scheduled to appear on the album is "Drown", which is said to be a duet between Al and the Kansas-based vocalist/guitarist Johnny Lokke.

Atkins' band THE DENIAL, also featuring ex-IRON MAIDEN/PRAYING MANTIS guitarist Dennis Stratton, is currently on a break while the members pursue other projects. Al is also said to be finishing off his book he is writing about the early years of JUDAS PRIEST, entitled "Dawn of the Metal Gods".

Rob Halford Praises U.S. Troops

Halford recently spoke with Stars and Stripes and offered words of encouragement for U.S. troops fighting the war on terrorism at home and abroad. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

“Right now, I have friends serving in Iraq, onboard the USS Stennis and in Guam, and the work they are doing is incredibly important, not only for America but the entire world. I fully support what they’re doing,” he said.

Halford, who cites San Diego as one of his favorite hangouts, said he became friends with many sailors and Marines from the nearby Navy bases and the sprawling Camp Pendleton.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in America and have several friends in the U.S. military all over the world,” said Halford.

GIs have always been big fans and supporters of Judas Priest and Halford’s three solo bands: Fight, Two and Halford.

“Everyone in the band supports all [the troops], and we sincerely wish them the best and a safe return home to their families,” he said.

Servicemembers in Europe and Japan will have a chance to catch the metal legends. Starting Wednesday, Judas Priest rolls through the United Kingdom for 11 shows.

From there, Priest will make stops in Holland, Germany, Poland, Austria, Italy, Portugal and will wrap up the European leg on April 17 with three dates in Spain. After a short break, the band heads to Japan and will play seven shows May 8-18. Plans are under way for a North American summer tour.

Rob Halford Comments On Dimmu Borgir

The Metal legend commented:

They’re very good musicians, talented songwriters and performing well on stage – a great addition to the heavy metal-family. I was overwhelmed, they master a genre, which is very difficult to get right. Rob Halford confirms that a mutual respect was found between Judas Priest and Dimmu Borgir.

Black Sabbath Voted Best British Rock Album

Ozzy Osbourne's Black Sabbath have topped a list of the 100 best British rock albums of all time.

Follow-up album "Paranoid" was fifth in the poll voted by readers of Kerrang! magazine.

Ozzy appears in the list six times, more than any other artist. The Brummie rocker features four times with Black Sabbath and twice as a solo artist.

He said that Black Sabbath making the number one spot was a triumph for British rock.

"Back then you'd hear, 'if you go to San Francisco, be sure to wear a flower in your hair'. And we were like, 'what the f*** are they on about?' We lived in Aston, Birmingham, in drizzly rain. The only flowers I ever saw were on a gravestone in our local cemetery," The Sun quoted Ozzy as saying.

Kerrang's Top 100 features a mix of heavy metal, punk and glam rock.
