Background
Trivium was formed in 2000 in Altamonte Springs Florida - Travis Smith, Matt Heafy and two other band mates met at Travis's house to learn and cover "For Whom the Bell Tolls" for his high school's Battle of the Bands competition. Even though they were inexperienced, they quickly formulated a band - the aggression of Trivium was popular among the high school crowd. Shortly after the Battle of the Bands show Trivium performed in a local music contest, Indiefest, taking 2nd place overall. After a couple local party gigs, Trivium's original singer left the band.
It was decided that Matt would take on the lead vocal duties as well as being the lead & rhythm guitarist and a search was underway for a rhythm guitarist. An old band mate of Travis', Brent Young earned the spot. With the new line up, Trivium played several garage gigs, party gigs, small clubs, and high school level competitions, gaining experience and writing more original songs. Soon, Trivium headed into a local studio to record a three-song demo.
Brent eventually moved to bass after Trivium's bassist departed.
Trivium's fan base began to grow, the band began to receive more local buzz and awards. Carrying a full set of originals, Trivium tore up club after club during the summer, opened for national acts - placed 1st for Battle of the Bands in high school and Matt was awarded The Best Metal Guitarist Award for 2002 presented by The Orlando Metal Awards.
Trivium recorded four more originals for their next demo. After this demo was recorded the musical direction of the band changed to something that the band and critics categorize as Melodic Death Metalcore. After one more 7-song demo EP, LifeForce records from Germany signed the band in May of 2003 and the band released 'Ember To Inferno' before adding second guitarist Corey Beaulieu and joining Roadrunner in April 2004.

"The tours been going damn good... incredible shows, as always killer fans, good times and some amazing fucking bands that we have the honor of sharing the stage with."
"ALWAYS GREAT to see Trivium fans and those of you showing up to the shows have been as supportive as ever - some big fucking pits, some jumping, headbanging, hoarse voices, chants, I mean come 'on we all know if you come to a Trivium show we expect you to work as hard as we do - you guys give us tons of energy and a great show, so thanks for that!"
"Our friends in As I Lay Dying are headlining this years SOTU and are amazing, rockin their hearts out nightly (I think they have some sweet ramps and cabs); In Flames we have toured with them before and they always put on a great show, Cannibal Corpse, our boys from Florida, are punishing the shit outta the crowds daily we've all been fans of them for a while, it's great to finally see them every day; and what can't be said about the blood spewing Gwar tearin it up day in and day out? You need to check them out!"
"Behemoth is probably the most intense thing I get to see all day, I can tell you one thing their set is Metal as Fuck, the guys are metal as fuck.. it's good to have some new metal friends who shred the shit outta their instruments."
"The tour also has fantastic bands like Horse The Band and Through The Eyes of The Dead who really are making some heads fucking bang. "
"All in all... a pretty good way to spend the summer."
"In other news... we're preparing for our first ever headlining tour in the US this coming October, we've been touring for the past 2 years and we are excited to be able to do our own thing for the first time, especially here at home, we will be supporting our 2nd Roadrunner Records release titled The Crusade expected to be in shops worldwide in early October, we are planning on bringing out some sick bands for our tour and are finalizing the line up which we think is really great and diverse, more info about the tour will come later."
"Once we finish our October headlining run - it's off to Europe to join the mighty fucking Iron Maiden for six weeks or so of what we know will be a very great tour as Iron Maiden will be supporting their newest release titled MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH we are really looking forward to it, truly one the world's best and most influencial metal bands ever. "
"When we finish touring with Iron Maiden at the end of the year we will take a little break and off again doing more world conquering in early 2007, we know 2007 will be a busy year on the road and we are looking forward to seeing where it leads and meeting many of you along the way."
"We will be shooting some new music videos, taking some new pr photos, doing some new interviews and whatever we can to support The Crusade, so you'll get all new vids and sweet shit like that soon."
Trivium Drummer Travis Smith Sounds Off
David Glessner of the San Antonio Express-News recently conducted an interview with TRIVIUM drummer Travis Smith. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
On the band's influences:
"Everyone in the band is into metal, but everyone gets the melody from different influences like QUEEN, THE EAGLES and all different genres of music. I'm pretty much a fan of whatever METALLICA touches. They could touch a pile of (junk) and I'd go out and buy it. I've been a fan since I was 8 years old and I'll be a fan for life."
On the band's cover of METALLICA's "Master of Puppets" that was recorded for Kerrang! magazine's tribute to METALLICA:
"We've been jamming that song since we were a local band. METALLICA is one of the reasons this band got started. We got lucky enough to go to Europe and do eight shows with them. They invited us on stage a couple times to sing vocals on (a cover of the MISFITS') 'Die, Die, My Darling'. That was a dream come true."
On the upcoming TRIVIUM album:
"The new album is gonna be on the shelves October 10. It's gonna be called 'The Crusade'. If you think 'Ascendancy' is a kick-ass album, this one pretty much kicks it right in the teeth. People need a thrash-metal album, and we're gonna deliver. I'm still proud of ('Ascendancy'), but when people ask how we're gonna top it, I just look them right in the eye and say, 'Dude, you ain't seen nothing yet.'"
On touring the world:
"Japan was unbelievable. It's almost sickening how perfect it is. I had a day off in Japan and we were walking the streets looking for something to do. They have a lot of bicyclers over there. We're walking down the street and I'm thinking, 'Dude, this place is too (expletive) perfect. I would pay to see one of these bicycle people crash into something.' I kid you not, dude, a minute later, these two ladies plow right into each other. I just lost it. It was, like, 'Thank God there is some flaw in the system.'"

Trivium, In Flames, Opeth Metal Hammer Nominees
The nominations for the fourth annual Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards — which this year takes place on Monday, June 12 at Koko in Camden, North London — were recently announced. In keeping with the "Valhalla" theme of this year's awards, Metal Hammer magazine have teamed up with the crew of the "Hammer of the Gods", an authentic full-size replica Viking longboat, to launch both the awards on June 12 and the team's cross channel row, which takes place on the weekend of June 3 to raise money for charity Task Brazil.
Leading the field for nominations are longstanding rock and metal purveyors Roadrunner Records, with a staggering total of 14 nominations for the label that is home to acts as diverse as SLIPKNOT, MACHINE HEAD and award-nominated DRAGONFORCE. Coming in a very close second for overall nominations is major label powerhouse Warner Music with an impressive 11 awards for their roster of breakthrough U.S. rock bands MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and AVENGED SEVENFOLD (a favourite of Radio 1's Jo Whiley), as well as Valley boys FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND and Finnish rockers H.I.M. In a complete whitewash of the category, Warner Music have secured four of the five nominations in the "Best Video" category, with the fifth and final nomination going to Roadrunner.
Going head-to-head with a joint total of four nominations are Sony and Universal, while EMI have secured two nominations for metal stalwarts and British institution IRON MAIDEN. Coming on strong is independent challenger to the rock throne Visible Noise marginally trails Sony and Universal with three nominations including "Best UK Band" and "Album of the Year", both for BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE. U.S. alternative rockers COHEED & CAMBRIA have surprised many with 3 nominations including appearances in the prestigious "Best Album" and "Best International Band" categories.
