A little bit of rain didn’t stop SXSW attendees from once again packing the Dirty Dog Bar down on Sixth Street this Friday. While the Metal Sucks showcase was heavy on tech death bands, the Tone Deaf Touring showcase included down tempo acts The Skull and Weedeater. Before those acts took the stage, though, progressive instrumentalists Stinking Lizaveta opened the show. The Philadelphia, Ohio based band has fifteen years of touring American and European audiences. This longevity showed in the trio’s tightness. Their female drummer played hard sticking tightly to the bassist who played an upright bass. The guitarist adeptly traversed his fret board. They received a good response from the small crowd. Trapped Within Burning Machinery - Moreno Valley, California's five-piece crushing doom/sludge outfit - is set to play this year's Day Of The Shred Fest on November 1st alongside Red Fang, Weedeater, Windhand, The Shrine, and a whole hell of a lot more.
The band was originally a one-man project started by Zak Esparza (lead guitar/vocalist) in 2007. After recording some demos, Zak recruited close friend Geoff Jones to play drums and Juan Rodriguez to fill in on bass.
The trio wrote and recorded the band’s first demo, "Evolutionary Transmitted Disease," and self-released it in the summer of 2009. In January 2011, the band entered the studio to record a first full-length album, "The Putrid Stench of Decaying Self," this time with new bassist Ernie Ballerz and second guitarist Robert Trujillo. The band released the full-length through Black Voodoo Records on October 5th, 2012.
In early 2014, the group released a limited split tape with LA's Pigeonwing. Trapped Within Burning Machinery has also recently added a third guitarist, James Inglett, to expand its sound. As of April of 2014, TWBM just finished second full-length, "The Filth Element," recorded with renowned producer/engineer John Haddad (Intronaut, Exhumed, Phobia), which will be released via Midnite Collective in the near future.
Day Of The Shred takes place at The Observatory in Santa Ana, California on Novemer 1st. Tickets are available here and the show will feature Red Fang, Weedeater, Windhand Elder, The Shrine, Bongripper, Radio Moscow, Ancestors, Glitter Wizard, Graves At Sea, Danava, Arctic, Hot Lunch, All Them Witches, Goya, (16), Greenbeard, and Trapped Within Burning Machinery. With Sonar closing, the location of 2013's Maryland DeathFest XI was up in the air. The organizers have finally announced that the fest will be held in the same location as last year, and will be expanded. Maryland DeathFest XI will take place in Baltimore, Maryland on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2013. Tickets go on sale on October 15th at 12 pm (EST). You can read the entire update below:
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.
