Latest Weedeater News
Below is our complete Weedeater news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Weedeater has announced several new headlining shows throughout the Midwest and Southeastern U.S. this September. Kicking things off in their home state, the band will devastate the crowd at Raleigh, North Carolina's Hopscotch Festival on September 11th, also with Public Enemy, Tortoise, Kylesa, U.S. Christmas, Harvey Milk and more. Weedeater will be dropping plenty of new material from the upcoming album on these shows, which will lead directly up to the recording of "Jason...the Dragon" with Steve Albini.
Weedaeter has been pushed to the band's limits over the past twelve months. While it's been a year of heavy and successful touring for the band, it was also a year of catastrophic physical injury. Leading off with Dixie Dave Collins' shotgun accident which spawned the brutal "Nine Toe Tour" earlier this year, and continuing shortly after that with drummer Keko tearing his meniscus after returning from said tour and requiring surgery. Both of those accidents prevented the group's two previously scheduled meetings with Albini. The group's latest installment of injury includes guitarist Shep breaking his pinkie finger while on tour in Europe this July alongside Black Cobra and Saviours. Luckily, Shep can still riff with his cast so the European tour and the recording session were spared. More...
Weedeater has issued the following update about the band's upcoming tour schedule and recording new material:
"Hey there, OK here's the latest. Keko's knee surgery was a success and he is back to a swift gallop; Dixie has hardly any buckshot left in his foot and with extensive rehabilitation has regained his signature stomp. Thanks again for all your warm wishes and support during both of those ordeals. The European tour starts tomorrow with our friends in Black Cobra and Saviours for a month of what is sure to be pure Euro-insanity. Hellfest with Kiss, Slayer, Godflesh, and Rwake? Plus all the other amazing bands? Holy Shit!
"After returning home there will be a few select performances in the US at Amelia Festival in VA on July 17th, as well as at Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh NC on September 11th with Public Enemy, Tortoise, Kylesa and Harvey Milk. Following those shows will be the studio sessions with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio that have now been rescheduled for September. There will also be some more shows surrounding the studio time that will be announced soon. Stay tuned for updates and thanks as always."
Weedeater has issued the following tour recap and announcement about postponing their recording sessions:
"Hey all, we have some good news and (as per usual) some bad news. First, the good news; it was an amazing tour! Thanks to all the people who came out and supported us and the other bands on all 3 legs of this trek (big hails to ASG, US Christmas, Black Cobra, Black Tusk, The Gates of Slumber, Struck by Lightning, & Sack Wild!) and thanks to all the great clubs and promoters who helped to make everything so awesome for all of us. Now for the bad news: Keko has just torn his meniscus to the point of immobility and needs immediate orthopedic surgery on his knee.
"Consequently, we regret to say that we must once again postpone the recording session at EA and the surrounding live performances in April and May. We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to all involved and will notify you ASAP regarding rescheduling. Thanks for your patience and understanding and please wish Keko a speedy recovery. Keko goes in for surgery next week and we'll know more then, but as it stands the June - July European tour is still 100% on. More news soon but that's all for now."
Weedeater has issued the following update about canceling their previously scheduled show tonight in Houston and instead playing in Little Rock:
"Hey all, the March 18th show in Houston is canceled; we're playing Little Rock AR @ Downtown Music instead. Our buds in ASG will be joining us along with Struck by Lightning. See you there! P.S. the first week has been great so far, thanks to all you guys and the amazing support bands for making this such a killer tour!"

Weedeater has issued the following update about upcoming tour plans after their vocalist has recovered from shooting off his own toe:
"Hey there, here's a quick update...Dixie is still resting his foot and only drinking half as much bourbon as usual so that he is healed in time for Weedater's hobbled yet glorious return to the live arena. Below are the tour dates; we'll have ticket links for you soon so keep checking back for updates. We will be playing new material from our upcoming release 'Jason...The Dragon', to be recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in late April. Much thanks to master Steve for letting a bunch of crazy, dirty, toeless, gun-toting hillbillies back into his pristine studio so we can scuff-up the floor and bang a bunch of his pots & pans together so as to call it 'music.'
"That took some class (more than we have anyway) and in all seriousness we are truly appreciative for Steve and everyone else at EA being so cool about rescheduling this session. The support bands on this US tour are all incredible and include: Black Cobra, ASG, Black Tusk, The Gates of Slumber, US Christmas, and Struck by Lightning. During the Tone Deaf SXSW showcase in Austin, the mighty Rwake will also make a rare appearance joining the party for one absolutely insane night of music. We'll have more updates shortly on the summer tour / fests in Europe as well as the tentative release date for 'Jason...,' so you'll be hearing back from us soon enough. See you out there, don't step on Dixie's foot, and of course, thanks to all of you for your continued support!"
The currently announced dates for the Weedeater "Nine Toe" tour are as follows: More...
Weedeater has issued the following update about canceling their tour dates and recording plans due to vocalist Dave "Dixie" Collins shooting his toe:
"As most of you know, here in the Weedeater camp we pride ourselves on a long tradition of shooting our band in the proverbial foot right before we're supposed to do something important. Whether it's a big tour, a recording session, or whatever else we're supposed to do, invariably we will find some way to try and thwart our grandiose plans. Well, it's no different for this recording session, except that this time we really did shoot ourselves in the foot. In fact we regret to inform all of you that this weekend, Dixie Dave shot his big toe off whilst cleaning his favorite shotgun. Yup, that's right. When reached for comment, Mr. Collins gave a quote that speaks for itself...'It wasn't my intention to shoot off my big toe. This really fucking sucks and the pain is unbearable.'
"Mr. Collin's doctors have advised that he is to be bedridden for the next few weeks during his recovery. This will obviously affect the recording session (and the few surrounding shows in Jan/Feb), which will now have to be postponed until after the March / April "nine-toe" tour. Said tour is still 100% on, however, so check back soon for updates on venues and exact dates. It looks like the support bands will be awesome and the band is really stoked to play this new material after touring for so many years on the same basic set. Yeah...we knew that too, sorry but we're about to make good on it. And of course after all, we gotta keep workin', like workin' men do. Shooting your big toe off isn't free, for fuck's sake! So to re-cap...Keko sacrificed his pinkie for Down/Melvins, Shep broke his hand for Today is the Day, and now Dixie has generously offered up his big toe for Steve Albini to nibble on. Unless overtly fond of Limburger cheese and rotten flesh, Master Steve is advised to decline."
North Carolina sludge metal band WEEDEATER has announced a string of Midwestern and Southeastern US tour dates for late January into early February. Two of the dates will feature the band's stripped-down, acoustic, two-piece bass and banjo persona, known as BARSTUL, supporting Nick Oliveri (Queens of the Stone Age). The confirmed dates are listed below, and as always with this band, more dates are to be announced shortly.
WEEDEATER will enter Steve Albini's Electric Audio studio in Chicago this month to being tracking their next full-length record for Southern Lord Records, due out later this year. More...
Weedeater has issued the following statement about preparing to record a new album:
"Hey yous, happy new year and all that shit! Weedeater's gonna go record with sensei Steve Albini again in Chicago this month and we're fucking elated. We're also going to play a few shows on the way there and back to showcase / road-test the new stuff. Come join us and hear some highly anticipated candidate songs for the next release, including 'The Claw of the Sloth,' and 'The Darkening...ening...ening.' OK we've said too much already, just be there goddammit. Oh yeah and for the Chicago and Newport shows we'll be supporting Nick Oliveri (QOTSA, Kyuss, Mondo G) and performing as Barstul, which is our stripped-down acoustic bass and banjo band. Here are the shows and few ticket links. See you there!"

Weedeater has issued the following recap of their recent tour dates:
"Hey all yous,
"It took a couple weeks to recover but Weedeater actually made it back in one piece. 70 days is a long time to tour, and we didn't have one day off for the last 39 days of that. Plus Keko was playing with a severed tendon in his pinkie. He is a fucking madman. Despite those obstacles and many others that shouldn't be mentioned, we had an amazing time. Everyone in the Down and Melvins camps were great to us and it felt like we were leaving family at the last show together. Amazing musicians, amazing people, all of you, we THANK YOU for an outstanding tour!! That was some legendary shit for sure. We'd also like to thank all of the fine folks at the shows who supported us via merch, lodging, and through any other means necessary. You are all saints and we couldn't have made it without you, so again, THANKS for everything!!
"In other news, during January Weedeater will once again be entering Steve Albini's wonderland that is Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago IL. We'll probably do a few shows on the way out and back, so stay tuned for those when they confirm. In March we'll be doing another US headlining tour; we'll have dates and such soon. We'll also be coming over to Europe next summer and hopefully the new album, 'Jason The Dragon', will be released by then, though we don't have a solid date for that yet. Lastly, we've just released the 1st ever Weedeater hood. It's simple, elegant, and it's got a fucking zipper."
One of the most comprehensive southern metal documentaries ever made is coming in 2010. Appropriately dubbed "Slow Southern Steel," the 80+ minute film is executive produced by Karim Khan (I'm Better Than Everyone Records) and directed by Rwake vocalist CT and David Lipke with the additional and integral assistance of George Hancock, Alix Petrovich and Beer Wolf guitarist Christian Sweeney (who will be releasing a paperback version of the production) among many others.
"Slow Southern Steel" peers into the world of true southern metal/doom through live footage and personal interviews; CT's devout commitment/knowledge/love of the topic at hand bringing the movie to life in a way few first-time directors can. Said CT about the laborious undertaking: "I knew there were things I could get out of these bands that other film makers could not." Added Khan, "There's just something very appealing to me about taking unyielding heavy songs and adding a strong southern element to them."
At press time, the film was still being shot and thus far, featured bands will include (in alphabetical order): A Hanging, ASG, Baron Grod, Beaten Back To Pure, Beer Wolf, Black Skies, Black Tusk, Blackblood Division, Blood Of The Sun, Collapsar, Colossus, Cough, Dark Castle, Deadbird, Dead-I-On, Dixie Witch, Doomsayer, Eyehategod, Flesh Parade, Haarp, Hawg Jaw, HOD, Hope And Suicide, Hostile Apostle, House Of Lightning, In The Lurch, Jucifer, Ketea, Khann, Kylesa, Mala Suerte, Music Hates You, Parasytic, Queen Beast, Royal Thunder, Rwake, Seahag, SeaWitch, Sourvein, Speedealer, Spickle, Suplecs, Subrig Destroyer, The Devil And The Sea, The Dumps, The Roller, The Unbeheld, Vessel Of The Divine, Weedeater, Withered and Zoroaster.
"Slow Southern Steel" will make its debut at the renowned Little Rock Film Festival in May of 2010 (www.littlerockfilmfestival.org) where many of the bands featured will be in attendance. Additional festival previews will follow.
The DVD edition is slated to be released in 2011 via fast-growing, vinyl-only (and now DVD) Chicago imprint, I'm Better Than Everyone Records.
