Mystic Festival Announces Changes In Program
With so many bands and the festival being planned months in advance, changes are inevitable. This year Sun Dont Shine, Necrot and Health will not be able to come to Gdansk. The first two bands canceled all their participation in European festivals, while Health had to reschedule their trip to Europe.
“Unfortunately, we’ve encountered significant logistical complications beyond our control that have made our appearance impossible. We are devastated to miss this opportunity to connect with our Polish fans”, said the band's statement published on Instagram.
Kirk Windstein, one of the founders of Sun Dont Shine, also issued a special statement for you: “I (We), would like to apologize for having to cancel the June 2025 run for Sun Don’t Shine overseas. We were really looking forward to doing it but are unfortunately unprepared. Our album will not be released in time and we all have not had the opportunity to get together as much as we planned due to obligations from our other bands that we are committed to also. We will be there soon and are so sorry. We just want to deliver 100% and we feel that with the other obligations we have and the album delay, that we would not be able to”.
Luckily, we were able to find fantastic replacements for all the those who have cancelled their performances.
The Bug is Kevin Martin, well known back in the 1990s to fans of GOD, Techno Animal and Ice, genre-breaking projects in which he collaborated with Justin Broadrick of Godflesh. Later, by the time as The Bug, Kevin drifted off into dub, dubstep and hip-hop, but always remained a faithful follower of bass, heaviness and noise. No wonder his latest album, Relapse released “Machine,” is described by the label as a dub version of Swans. Are you ready to be grinded by this machine?
Ufomammut celebrated a beautiful anniversary in 2024 - 25 years of existence, 10 studio albums. It was enough to establish themselves as one of the most remarkable European representatives of that wave of heavy music, which we owe to Kyuss and Neurosis. The one that carries with it the piled-up influences of classic hard rock, and also doom, and stoner, and sludge, and psychedelia. These Italians will bring us the perfect soundtrack for space rituals.
Drab Majesty is the coldest wave - or, as they call themselves, Tragic Wave - straight out of Los Angeles. They're actually more than a band, more of a stage experiment in which Deb DeMure and Mona D ask themselves and their audience questions about identity and the nature of creativity. And at the same time, it's damn good dance music, lined with darkness and despair.
New York hardcore? That flame will never be put out. Stray From The Path fuel it with fuel drawn not only from veterans of the scene, because in the group's music you can also hear the influence of Rage Against The Machine and nu metal. They called their live album “Smash 'Em Up,” and yes, there is a legitimate concern that they will smash you up.
Employed To Serve have titled their latest album “Fallen Star” (due out April 25), but this British band's star is rising and shining brighter and brighter. The metalcore quintet perfectly balances emotionality and technique, and Justine Jones, who fronts it, keeps on cutting with her razor-like voice.
Sphere released an album titled “Blood Era” in 2022, but in fact the bloody death metal era of this Warsaw-based band has been going on for two decades. No shortcuts, no compromises - pure brutality straight from hell. And that's right, “Inferno,” Sphere's newest album, will be released later this spring.
The festival will feature, among others: King Diamond, Sepultura, In Flames, Bullet For My Valentine, Opeth, W.A.S.P., Apocalyptica, Suicidal Tendencies, Cradle Of Filth, Turbonegro, Jerry Cantrell, Blood Fire Death – A tribute to Quorthon and the Music of Bathory, Exodus, Perturbator, Jinjer, Landmvrks, Eagles Of Death Metal, The Bug, I Am Morbid – “Domination” set, Hatebreed, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Dark Tranquility, Tiamat, The Kovenant, Cattle Decapitation, Whitechapel, Death Angel, Elder, Municipal Waste, Polaris, Nile, Alcest, Beherit, Oranssi Pazuzu, Ufomammut, Midnight, Vader - "Litany" set, Imminence, Paleface Swiss, Eyehategod, Halocene, Green Lung, Pentagram, Combichrist and Skeletal Remains.
Mystic Festival will take place in Gdansk, Poland at the Gdansk Shipyard on June 4th through 7th, 2025.

Mystic Festival Announces Daily Lineups
The Mystic Festival 2025 lineup is shrouded in less and less mystery. The growing clarity about what you can expect should make it easier for you to plan your attendance at the festival.
Sounds that are new, daring, exploratory? There are a few up our sleeves. The Swedes from Imminence need no promotion among fans of such soundscapes, their visionary take on metalcore speaks for itself. SiM – aka Silence iz Mine – are coming to us from Japan, where, for the last two decades, they have been creating their own musical world that marries metal with hip-hop and even… ska. The fans of the Attack on Titan anime will need no introduction to the band. Progressive rock is mostly associated with the genre’s golden era which bloomed half a century ago, but Port Noir are bringing it into the 21st century. Unprocessed are also offering progressive, virtuoso playing, but it is altogether more aggressive, with the metalcore nerve. The Brits have recently taken the lead in setting the new course in heavy music and Split Chain is another one in the list of pioneers – although in their music you will hear the familiar sounds of the turn of the 21st century, from shoegaze to nu-metal, but has anyone ever combined them in such a way as they did?
Graphic Nature is nu-metalcore buttressed with cold-as-ice electronics, a music both hostile and hypnotizing. The progressive vision of post-metal is spread by Blindead 23, who enter a new stage of their odyssey with the enthralling mini-album Vanishing. Heave Blood & Die scoff at genre lines, colliding post-punk with hardcore, to then swerve in the direction of prog rock. The guys from the deathcore band Paleface Swiss are said to have met at a Slipknot concert and you can hear that in their blood-thirsty music – though, as any predatory, they walk their own paths.
HÉR is a local, Gdansk band, but their setting their sail and taking the sea. “Their minimalist, violin and sax-laced rites gradually tilt the world further off its axis” is what the British Metal Hammer had to say about the band, and it is hard not to agree. The Finnish band Luna Kills, with the charismatic Lotta behind the mic, combines nu-metal with video game soundtracks and makes something that works more than well. Then there’s the brooding and saturated with extreme emotions metalcore which is the domain of the Warsaw-based Last Penance.
You prefer a more traditional sound? During the show of the New York band Castle Rat, you can expect the following – the Rat Queen will behead swiftly and smoothly every poser with her sword. The rest will be able to enjoy a superb, classic heavy/doom metal. Their compatriots from Bewitcher will send your heart speeding with their devilish speed’n’roll, and so will the British Hellripper, which at full speed ahead goes neck and neck with the legacy of Venom, Motörhead and Sabbat. Inhuman Nature is a thrash/heavy metal band from London – no shortcuts, only riffs sharp enough to cut. Bad Touch will remind us what the origin of it all is – classic, blues-based hard rock, reminiscent of the greatest years of Led Zeppelin or Free.
Hatebreed, but of course, take no prisoners. Why would they if the construction of this weapon used the engine of Slayer and the armour of the American hardcore? The rumour has it that the Brits from Grove Street started out playing for fun, but you’d be remiss not to take their music seriously now – it’s crossover colliding forceful, hardcore riffs with thrash rampage.
Stoner, doom, sludge, desert storms and cellar apparitions? Always more than welcome at the Mystic Festival! The music of Elder draws from doom and heavy metal but comes into bloom with all the colours of the psychedelic rainbow – those who enter into this magic realm won’t find their way back. Sun Dont Shine is still a new name, not everyone knows it yet so let us introduce the members – Kenny Hickey (Type O Negative, Silvertomb), Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down), Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Silvertomb) and Todd Strange (Crowbar, Down). The sun really doesn’t shine in their music. “Life kills you” as Dopethrone warn us in the title of the opening track of their latest album Broke Sabbath. And if life fails to do the deed, the Canadians will finish you off with the mixture of everything in music that is heavy, vile and evil. Tundra rock is the response from the North to the desert, stoner sound from the States – Slomosa know what riffs are meant for and they’re not afraid to use them. We remain in Norway. Bokassa are sometimes compared with their fellow countrymen from Turbonegro and Gluecifer and not without cause – their music is a high-proof mixture of punk, metal and stoner rock. Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol is coming all the way from Texas to get you a boo-boo from the music they tried to summarize with the title of their new record, Big Dumb Riffs. You can expect an equally unforgettable adventure from the encounter with the doomgaze band Faetooth, hailing partly from California, partly from the netherworld.
We also have some good news for the darkness devotees. The cult Greek band Zemial, currently touring with Absu as part of their live band, will perform their original material, allowing us to glimpse into the abyss of Tartarus. The Dutch band Soulburn, led by Eric Daniels, the guitarist from Asphyx’s classic line-up, will present a perfectly nefarious marriage of black and death metal. Not only is the music of the Canadian band Thantifaxath of diabolical pedigree, but it is also devilishly complex as if King Crimson signed away their souls. It is hard to say in which category to put Thaw, who in 2024 recaptured our attention with their excellent album Fading Backwards. It is, without a doubt, the musical embodiment of pitch-black darkness, though their sound derives not only from black metal. “Black Metal is Krig” as proclaim the Norwegian witches of Witch Club Satan and we have no intention of arguing with them. Totenmesse is a black metal band with a Polish seal of approval but their own vision for the genre – their 2024 slot at our festival was interrupted by a thunderstorm; they are coming back to finish the destruction that they started. Martwa Aura (Polish for ‘dead aura’) perfectly encapsulates in its name the music that the band plays – a funereal black metal without even a trace of daylight.
Enjoy pain, don’t you? Well, we are happy to provide. Vader entered into the new century with perhaps the most uncompromising material under their belt – now, the time has come to bring back the full body of the wrathful Litany. Can you smell decay? Must mean Necrot from California are near, with their cemetery, putrid death metal. Similar ground is covered by the British four-piece Celestial Sanctuary, trekking through pure, living death. A lesson in brutal yet technical death metal will be presented by the Italians from Hideous Divinity. More...

Greekbastard's 2024 Anti-List
Is there anything more annoying these days than someone else’s opinion? Stolen from quotes anonymous, I think the old adage goes… “Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and they all stink.” And if you’re not opinioned out yet regarding every bloggers 2024 top albums lists, It’s my turn to drop my top 5 albums for 2024 upon your bored and bloodshot corneas.
Before I begin, I need to point something out. I don’t check the release calendar with intense vigor to seek out new albums to listen to. My listening choices for the most part happen haphazardly. Quite often, it’s just a band I’ve always liked and happen to notice that they released some new material. Other times, there’s a buzz about an album and I want to see what the fuss is about. So, without further ado, this is my top five albums list for 2024.
Honorable Mentions:
Testament – The Legacy (Remaster 2024) and The New Order (Remaster 2024)
Testament’s first two albums were instant classics, I’m not going to review them because that’s old news. However, the remasters make them relevant again because they sound sonically superior to the original 1980’s releases. These re-releases reaffirm that Testament is one of the top thrash bands to ever exist and still sound relevant in today’s metal “metalverse.”
Electric Wizard – Black Magic Rituals & Perversions Vol. 1
Just dropped like free LSD in mid-December, this live album deserves a shout out. When it comes to contemporary doom metal, Electric Wizard is the benchmark and you can take your Black Sabbath comparisons and smoke them. That’s old news. “Black Magic Rituals & Perversions Vol. 1” is the ultimate Electric Wizard compilation album when it comes down to track selection. In fact, it was actually a live setlist from 2020 when live music was put on pause in order to keep their live chops up to par. The sound of this album is deliciously raw and lo-fi for fans of unpolished Doom and Stoner Metal
The Actual Top 5 List:
5. Necrot – Lifeless Birth
If you ask me, this is the best Death Metal album of 2024, not that trendy Blood Incantation album. Necrot makes THAT band sound like Celtic Frost did during their Cold Lake era. “Lifeless Birth” is guttural, grisly and induces grave digging. That other band makes me want to take a nap. This is TRVE Death Metal!
4. Shining – The Helsinki Tapes
When not popping up in not so favorable click bait headlines on other metal blogs, Shining has consistently put out excellent releases. “The Helsinki Tapes” is another example of this. Shining pushes the boundaries of Black Metal musically and this album is no different. As unstable as Niklas Kvarforth may seem at times, his musical prowess should never be discredited.
3. Cavalera Conspiracy – Schizophrenia
Before you start your insolent complaints that this release was a money grab and was stolen from the original members of Sepultura, let me stop you right there. This release in actuality prolongs their legacy. The original “Schizophrenia” was way ahead of its time. The masses finally took hold of the badassery of Sepultura during “Arise” and the albums leading up to it never inherited the respect they deserved. “Schizophrenia” 2024 gives the original release a much-needed makeover and prolongs the legacy of early Sepultura. Comments bassist/vocalist Luca Indrio, "You already know it. The Lifeless Birth album release tour is going to be a savagely brutal one! I'm sure our loyal fans are going to be there to rage and destroy every fucking night. These shows are going to be pure madness; you are not going to regret being there, but you might regret not showing up. If you feel like you need a night of good metal you better be there early. The support bands are insanely good. Bat has a new album out for the tour just like us, Street Tombs is representing for [drummer] Chad [Gailey]’s label, Carbonized plus Phobophilic is joining us late in the tour, all such sick bands. Epic as fuck. See you all at the shows!"
