Background
Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.
On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.
More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

The Big Four Rock by Satellite
Thrash veterans Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer and Metallica have never before all played the same show or festival. This isn’t too surprising, as that is a lot of stars and egos to get into one place at one time – someone has to play first, and only one band can play last. But finally in summer of 2010 the Sonisphere Festivals wrangled all four together to play seven dates in Europe. Because there are no North American dates the bands arranged to have the show in Sofia, Bulgaria beamed by satellite to hundred of theaters back home. And while there are plenty of ways to nitpick the negatives, the end result is a hugely entertaining concert via video. More...

Orphaned Land Talks About Playing With Metallica
Israeli heavy metal group Orphaned Land has posted a message online, discussing their recent supporting slot for Metallica in Israel. Their message reads as follows:
“It was 17 years ago, in 1993 when I saw Metallica for the first time. There were barely any metal concerts of foreign bands in Israel that time. I still remember that day, I was 17 years old only, the moment where they played 'Fade To Black' is for sure the highlight moment of my youth. Time went by and here we are, finding ourselves sharing the stage with the fathers of metal. Orphaned Land exist for 18 years now, we accomplished some success ourselves and toured the world. Still, I cannot remember when I was exited like that, the fact that we even had a small chat with the Metallica members is a moment to remember, I know that they are just humans, but they are our childhood heroes! This was such a night to remember and a great closure to this youth moment I had with Metallica.
"Unfortunately, we saw only six songs from the amazing Metallica concert and then we had to run to the airport to catch a flight to play at the equally fantastic Rock Hard festival in Germany. We arrived on Sunday at an amazing venue, a sunny day and a rare atmosphere, some kind of a big metallic family gathering. The fans were great, we also met many friends who came, everyone was red like a tomato (from the sun) and the show was one hell of a party.
"Thank you Metallica!!! Thank you Rock Hard fest!!"

Kerry King Hopeful For "Big Four" U.S. Tour
In a recent interview with Noisecreep, Slayer guitarist Kerry King spoke about his hopes to bring the "Big Four" of thrash metal (Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax) together for a North American tour.
"I hope Slayer/Megadeth tour is a precursor to the Big Four coming to the States," King said. "That tour it should be everywhere: here, Australia, Japan. Any place that wants it should have it and it should happen."
He added: "Metallica has toured a ton and as much as we have going, we don't have a free moment in our schedule, so this is just me thinking out loud, but I'd say it would be great in summer 2011. If there are any talks, they are preliminary. And that's a time frame that would work for us."

Metallica Issues Letter To Ronnie James Dio
Metallica drummer Lars Ulric has issued the following open letter to the recently deceased Ronnie James Dio:
"Dear Ronnie, I just got off stage in Zagreb. I was met with the news that you've passed on. I'm kind of in shock, but I wanted you to know that you were one of the main reasons I made it onto that stage to begin with. When I first saw you in Elf, opening for Deep Purple in 1975, I was completely blown away by the power in your voice, your presence on stage, your confidence, and the ease with which you seemed to connect to 6000 Danish people and one starry-eyed 11 year old, most of whom were not familiar with Elf's music. The following year, I was so psyched when I heard the results of you joining forces with my favorite guitar player. You guys sounded so right for each other and I instantly became Rainbow's #1 fan in Denmark.
"In the fall of 1976, when you played your first show in Copenhagen, I was literally in the front row and the couple of times we made eye contact you made me feel like the most important person in the world. The news that you guys were staying in town on your day off somehow embedded itself in my brain and I made the pilgrimage to the Plaza Hotel to see if I could somehow grab a picture, an autograph, a moment, anything. A few hours later you came out and were so kind and caring... pictures, autographs and a couple minutes of casual banter. I was on top of the world, inspired and ready for anything. Rainbow came to Copenhagen a couple more times over the next few years and each time you guys blew my mind, and for a good three years were my absolute favorite band on this planet. More...

The Rockstar Ramblings: Vote Slash for Office
Slash (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver) released his new solo album this week that includes a song sung by Ozzy Osbourne, “Crucify The Dead” containing the lyrics: "A loaded gun jammed by a rose/the thorns are not around your head/your ego cut you til you bled". Slash is adamant that the song is not about ex-band mate Axl Rose saying, “Yes, there were some key lines in there that were very suggestive of my experience. No, this is just an overall picture of the issues.” Prediction: We are two years from Slash running for a political office… More...
