Metallica was first formed by Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, and future Megadeth member Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney. They first played in L.A., but later found themselves at home playing in the San Francisco Bay area. The band later replaced Ron with Cliff Burton and Dave with Kirk Hammet as late as 1983.

On September 27, 1986, on the European leg of the Master of Puppets tour, Cliff Burton was killed in a bus accident in Sweden en route to their next show's location. Tragic as this event was, Metallica continued on and Cliff was replaced by Jason Newsted, who remained part of the band until 2001, when he finally annouced he would leave Metallica because of the damage he had done to his body touring and headbanging for fourteen years.

More than any other band, Metallica and their albums have been the yardstick with which to measure other heavy metal releases. Metallica practically defines "heavy metal" as a sub-genre of metal itself, although their music ranges from NWOBHM to Thrash in their earlier days. However, in the 1990s and beyond 2000, Metallica evolved a more mainstream sound, which helped them become a household name and the seventh biggest selling act in history.

Metallica Shakes Up Christchurch

Biggest metal band in the world, good friends and a 4 hour road trip – what more is needed? After pressure from a Facebook group of all things, Metallica decided to head down south for two dates on the final leg of the “World Magnetic Tour” in Christchurch, New Zealand, and I went to see what breath was left in the great four horsemen.

Supporting acts for the night were Christchurch locals Tainted, Texan band The Sword and metal luminaries Fear Factory. For the normal reasons (meeting people, searching for alcohol, parking, travel etc.), we turned up part way into the show when The Sword was just closing, so it's unfortunate I can't comment on the first two bands much. I've seen Tainted several times now (who plays a modern brand of Lamb of God styled groove metal), so I wasn't too disappointed there, but from what I heard from others, The Sword subdued a baying Metallica crowd well enough, taking the stage with "Hey... we're The Sword" and then blasting out some tunes. Metallica Contributing Kinks Cover To Album

Metallica has issued the following update about contributing a cover track of the Kinks song "You Really Got Me" to a compilation album:

"About a year ago, we had the honor of playing with Ray Davies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary concert in New York . . . it was the first time we had ever met Ray and was definitely one of the highlights of our night. Fast forward a few months to the tuning room before the show in Oslo on April 14 and there we were recording with Ray! How cool is that?

"Turns out that Ray has been planning to put out a record of collaborations on classic Kinks songs with a wide variety of today's musicians and low and behold we were actually asked to be included in this stellar group spanning many genres and styles. The result is coming to your favorite place to purchase music around the world on November 1, 2010. Titled 'See My Friends,' our version of 'You Really Got Me' appears on disc, or in bits and bites, along side of Ray with Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne, Alex Chilton, Spoon, Frank Black, Billy Corgan and many others. We had a blast hanging out with a real legend and hope you dig it. For more info, go here."

Metallica Comments On Rumors Of Canceled Show

Metallica has issued the following statement about rumors the band would not be performing the upcoming tour date in Christchurch, New Zealand:

"We're in route to Melbourne and we're psyched about getting out there and getting amongst it again. We kinda make it a policy here to not respond to rumors and speculation, however the recent magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand is certainly a unique situation and we are aware that there have been various reports that we would not make it there.

"Well, we're coming. Full bore. Between working through European volcanic ash clouds last April (and not missing any shows...) and living in California most of our lives, we are no strangers to the effects of natural disasters and our hearts go out to those of you affected by this major tremor. What we can and will do is what we always do – come and play, give 110%, and 'rock the house' (!!) in our own unique way for the two nights we're in Christchurch. We're looking forward to our Fall in Australia and New Zealand... it's just beginning!"

Metallica To Release "Six Feet Down Under" EP

Metallica has checked in with the following announcement about releasing the "Six Feet Down Under" EP in celebration of the band's trek to Australia and New Zealand:

"We're getting psyched up for our return to Australia and New Zealand next week. It's been six long years since we've visited and we're ready to throw down! The nice people at Universal Music were so darn excited that they actually suggested that we release something special to commemorate this last run of World Magnetic tour dates, so ta-da we present the 'Six Feet Down Under' limited edition EP! Coming to Trans-Tasman record stores and also at the Metallica.com Store on September 20.

"Here's the story. The collective brain trust came up with what we thought might be a kinda fun idea. How about some live recordings from each time we have been lucky enough to visit the area? It was all well and good until we realized that we did not start making multi-track recordings of every show until 2004... oops! But you guys, the fans, came to our rescue with some pretty decent bootleg options and we trimmed those down to two songs from each tour in 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2004. In digging a little deeper, it occurred to us that we had tracks that had never before been released as 'live b-sides' (we're not counting the bonus songs on i-Tunes, okay?) and that that added to the adventure of pulling it all together.

"Be gentle with us. A few of these songs are, well, we'll say 'rough,' which may be an understatement!! They do, however, capture the live moments and hopefully you'll have as much fun listening as we did playing on those nights."

The track listing is as follows: More...

Shawn Drover Checks In From The Road

Megadeth's Shawn Drover has checked in with the following recap of the band's recent show at the Cow Palace:

"Well, last night was fun. Lars asked us to play 'My last words' 2 minutes before we went onstage - and being as we have never even rehearsed that tune with this lineup and Megadeth hasn't played that tune since 2005 in the land of OZ, I think we pulled it off rather well. Don't worry though, next time Metallica comes to where I live, I will return the favor and ask them DURING their show to play the most obscure tune they haven't played in years! Baaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaa

"All kidding aside, that was actually really fun to just wing it and enjoy the moment. I hope the crowd did enjoy it as well. As you would fathom for San Fran, lots of musicians backstage and mingling to be had. All fun stuff and a good night was had by all. Life doesn't suck, humans. I am more Metal than you."

Metallica Announces Final "World Magnetic" Dates

Metallica has issued the following statement about adding a second show in Christchurch and announcing the final dates of the "World Magnetic" tour:

"The end of the line... Dear Friends: we are so psyched to add a second show in Christchurch, New Zealand at CBS Canterbury Arena on September 21. Thanks again for demanding that we visit you there! Now to the real reason we're here taking up space on this site, we also want to announce that all of our play dates have now filled up with the addition of this show. That's right boys and girls, this will be the last date added to the World Magnetic Tour! So if you're waiting for us to come to the Polar Ice Caps, your undiscovered planet or even your basement, sorry, this is as good at it gets.

"It has been a very long, and most amazing run. The number of shows played depends on when you start counting. We are gonna go with what the boys in the band say, 'cuz they have been out on the road more or less continuously since May of 2008 and that brings us up to a total of 212 shows in 153 cities. Each and every one of them has been memorable and special and we thank you for that. This is where we could spew a bunch of crazy numbers at you...you know the 2.3 million tickets sold, 300 million miles traveled, 3,000 pounds of bacon consumed 'shtick,' but you don't care about that stuff and frankly neither do we. What we DO care about is letting you know the immense gratitude we feel for all of your love and support over these past two and half years. When we embarked on this "magnetic" journey, none of us ever, in our wildest dreams, imagined how truly incredible it would be and it's all because of hanging out with YOU! More...

Metallica Announces Concert In Christchurch

American heavy metal veterans Metallica has announced that they have added a show in Christchurch, New Zealand to their tour of the down under this September. A message from the band reads as follows:

"You asked (okay, demanded!) and we heard ya. When we got wind of the massive petitions for us to come to Christchurch, New Zealand we just had to check it out . . . and wow, the number of requests were overwhelming! So, the moral of the story is to be careful what you wish for . . . because 'Tallica is coming to your town on September 22 at CBS Canterbury Arena!

"Now here's the catch - our production team scoped it out over the last couple of weeks and no matter how hard we tried to re-configure it, the bottom line is the CBS Canterbury Arena is just not equipped to handle the in the round "Death Magnetic" show that we've been carting around the world on this tour. That's not going to stop us, but we wanted to let you know that we will not be able to bring the full set up that you may have seen in photos on the site or will see if you happen to hit another show in New Zealand or Australia. It's gonna be us and YOU old-school "club style" in an arena making a whole lot of noise together, and that's what counts.

"Tickets go on sale July 15 at 9:00 AM with the MyTKT pre-sale starting July 13 at noon. Fan Club members should check www.metclub.com for information about a special pre-sale for them starting on July 9.

"Thanks for all the love and support . . . see you in September!" More...

Megadeth Comments On Big Four Shows

Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine has checked in with the following statement about the band's "Big Four" tour dates:

"Droogies! So now that the Big Four dates have come and gone, I feel it is time to check-in, say, "Hello" and tell you what has been going on in my world. First off, when we left San Marcos and Mustaine Music Studios aka 'Vic's Garage,' we had no idea what to expect, other than the fact that we wanted to make a point; we wanted to make the other bands feel comfortable, we wanted the fans to all leave this momentous occasion feeling completely satiated, we wanted the guys in Metallica to know that we could be depended on to pull our share...

"I don't know if we delivered for everyone, but for the tens of thousands of people each night, and ultimately hundreds of thousands of fans over the entire run of the Big Four festivals (affectionately dubbed 'Sonisphere'), it seemed to me that the fans were finally able to put aside the silly stuff that the press has kept on life support for so many, many years. We did several round-table interviews with a member from each camp of the Big Four, and one thing that was a constant and that we all agreed on was that the press was the responsible parties for keeping the feuds alive.

"You heard it straight from our mouths; we are all at peace with one another, and we all are friends. End of story – or in other words, several shit magazines will now have to learn how to write real interviews, reviews, and features, instead of causing so much turmoil with us four, all in the spirit of selling their publications."
