Serj Tankian Explains Lack Of New System Of A Down Album

Band Photo: System Of A Down (?)
After the Facebook debacle when Shavo Odadjian called out Serj Tankian for slowing down the process of a new System of a Down release, Tankian himself has now conducted an interview with Artist Direct to discuss the situation. Excerpts from the interview follow:
AD: What does System of a Down mean to you in 2013?
First and foremost, they're my partners and friends I've created this music and career with over these years. I'm still very thankful. To me, it's what I've done. It's where I've come in. It's something I enjoy doing. We started touring again three years ago for good purpose. I think we missed being a part of that together. Of course, we have a lot of fans and people interested in getting a record sooner rather than later. Things take time though. Everyone has a life and has to have the right frame of mind to make a record at the same time. Jazz-iz Christ and Orca will be my fifth and sixth solo records in seven years. I've been touring with System, The FCC, and orchestras around the world. I haven't stopped. There hasn't been much time-off. I want to make sure I have time for myself and my family. Only the four of us can decide what System means. I know the fans agree that's what System is, and that's amazing.
AD: You have to do it at the right moment.
I can't write a forced record. It's like romancing someone at a time you don't want to be romantic. It's not even a choice. We've enjoyed touring a lot. All of the tours have been well-received. We play really tightly—probably better than we ever have. It's been cool. A new record requires three years. It's not something I can do right now. When I can commit to a three-year album cycle, I'll be down to do it.
AD: You have to do it when the time is right.
Exactly! You can't take orders. We're not making pizza [Laughs]. You can't do it on anyone else's timeframe.
AD: Didn't you get into rock 'n' roll to avoid taking orders?
[Laughs] That's hilarious.

I have NO idea why he's being such a douche-bag... This in response to the other guys accusations, and instead of saying he's wrong, he seems to be saying "He's wrong but I'm going to blab and make right in the end"
Kick his a$$ out, he sits there BRAGGING about his 6 records, when SoaD (where he got his START) only has 5... Not to mention his solo work SUCKS hxc... Get Mike Patton or even the vocalist from Dog Fashion Disco could EASily replace Serj

I am so disappointed in the response to this. You guys are acting like a bunch of toddlers. My personal favourite is massive amount of irony in this,
>Sometimes musicians make me sick...it's not about the fans it's about themselves!
Translates roughly into,
"WAAAAAAH HE ISN'T DOING WHAT I WANT, HE'S SELFISH!"

I thought this analogy was particularly poor: "I can't write a forced record. It's like romancing someone at a time you don't want to be romantic. It's not even a choice."
That's the phrase of a person headed for breakup/divorce. Then again, it sounds like the rest of the band is getting ready to part ways with Serj, so maybe it was a really great analogy and he just didn't realize :)

Wow, I can't imagine any band being given the luxury of having 3 years to create an album. He is definitely making excuses instead of owning up to the fact that this is merely a side option. I'm not sure why everyone got p***ed off at Shavo for just telling it like it was but goddamn! The first effort from Serj was tolerable at best. I think he has a unique voice that fits SOAD, but it's really not strong enough to be able to support a solo career. All of the symphony music just feeds the persona of his image now, which reminds me of a decrepit pedophile. Watch the music video for empty walls and tell me I'm wrong!

I do like SOAD....would love to see them record a new album, but I dare say it's been far too long now and they've lost that 'spark'. Serj sounds like he's making excuses. It appears like he's not really interested in SOAD anymore which is a pity. His voice is the perfect fit for SOAD.
Oh well....that's the way things roll.

I'm 100% Serj could make time if he wanted. He's had more than enough time to "do his own thing."
He knows how bad everyone wants a new SOAD album, trust me. He was immediately ready to answer my question about it a few years ago when I met him. Very nice guy by the way.
Still, this irks me so much. Please, for the sake of everyone who put you where you are today, put your heart into another SOAD album.

why the hell would anybody who lives in the states especially support a person like tankian who praised the hijackers on 9/11 as " courageous" to only back peddle when confronted by howard stern in an interview a month after he said it by saying " oh i never said that".
fvckin liar, and this goes to show what goes on in society today alot, artists, musicians, athletes, celebrities who do and say stupid things at times or all the time are never held accountable or if so rarley and the fans, they dont give a $hit, they keep on dumping out more money for these people, i know in alot of peoples book it does not matter but for me, character counts.

IN OTHER WORDS, SHAVO HAD IT RIGHT. SERJ IS JUST WAY, WAY TOO BUSY RELEASING AND TOURING BEHIND SOLO ALBUMS TO THINK ABOUT SOAD. HE MIGHT CONSIDER THEM IN HIS OWN SWEET GODDAMN TIME.
