I called Vega did the bass on the album, can't remember his first name though.
I wasn't quite sure how best to describe them but I thought nu metal fitted them most logically, though they are very different from the bands in the genre and pretty unique all around.

Last I heard he was still comatose, yeah. No further news has been forthcoming as far as I'm aware. No disrespect to Chi, but the band couldn't delay the album forever, and comas are a very uncertain thing. Hopefully this filler guy fits with Deftones as well as Chi did/does.

Chi remains in a "partially conscious" state. He speaks a little, opens his eyes sometimes and can respond to yes and no questions and has been moving his limbs some due to various forms of treatment. Progress, but super-gradual. Updates are at Oneloveforchi.com.
Meanwhile, Seth Putnam of Anal c*** apparently snapped out of his self-inflicted, drug induced coma in '04 like it was nothing and goes on making his deranged AC albums. sigh...
Looking forward to the new Deftones, they were one of my favorite acts out of the that whole nu-metal mess. They were part of the movement but weren't so mired in the style.
